your best option is probably to get a novation remoteSL mk1 and use Eric's midi template set, rather than spending months with a lesser DIY solution. then copy the factory phrases to user Styles. you could modify and make your own cutdown edits of the novation templates to suit your purposes.

these templates cover both eventualities of sysex and midiCC for a lot of things, and you'll be able to observe the differences in use.
- broadly, sysex is 'set' (starting values), and midiCC is 'modify' (and resets to original values) -
the RemoteSL can be either the 'Zero' controller-only box, or the keyboard versions, 25SL, 37SL, 61SL, and has USB or DIN midi. can be found nice'n'cheap. 25SL isn't a bad option, if you want the joystick and XY pad, and still quite small and portable - should fit inside a rack box. and of course, there's the very good Remote editor software, you don't have to doing much/any programming on the unit. (plus, you can use it for any midi device)
