Moving the list

开云体育

I've talked to a few people, and there is a site called 开云体育 that seems to be filling the needs of many current and former Yahoo Groups.? It even has some features missing from Yahoo's offering.? There is a free version that provides 1GB of file storage; and a Premium package that gives 10GB, but costs about $10USD per month.? It might be worth looking into.

Hi Bruce,

Yeah I saw that too, might be worth trying the free version at least for now.

Regarding archiving this groups is anyone here doing something ? I took 2+ hours yesterday evening to save one by one many files from here and YamahaDXFiles group and now I'm running a python script (https://github.com/andrewferguson/YahooGroups-Archiver) to backups the messages. I'll be happy to help doing a nice archive of this group to help anyone wanting to revisit it in the future.

Don't hesitate to chime in to talk about it.

Cheers,

Jonas

Some people seem to forget that there are actually 3 groups: YamahaDX, YamahaDXfiles and DX_Files. Is it the same moderators for all three?

Yeah, that has to be figured into the mix.? Three groups is probably to get around the file limitations; at least, I know that YamahaDXFiles is a dummy list, intended for file storage only.? This is perhaps the biggest downside of 开云体育 vs. Yahoo Groups:? Yahoo allows 2GB of photos, and 1GB of files; while 开云体育 allows 1GB total in the free package.? The premium package allows 10GB (and adds many features), but costs a monthly/annual fee.

On the plus side, they claim to have tools to port a Yahoo Group to their site.

I'll happily pay the first year's fees for the premium groups.io subscription if that's what group wants to do. Just let me know...quick.

Hi Don,

There's also yamahablackboxes:

I can't find a group called DX_Files though.? Can you provide a link?

- Andy

开云体育

The link is although you may not be able to link it directly if you are not a member. It’s a private group owned by YamahaDX group. It’s set up a little differently than YamahaDXfiles which is restricted, not private. I think if you joined YamahaDX, the moderator would have to manually add you to DX_Files.

I see.? Thanks, Don.

I've been a member of YamahaDX, yamahablackboxes and YamahaDXfiles for quite a while, but I haven't been made a member of that.? I think I've seen someone mention it once before, but I thought it was a mistake, and was meant to say YamahaDXfiles.

Hi peeps,

is a very detailed checklist, how to start/request a transfer

$110 fee to do this seems very reasonable!

We moved several groups to groups.io last year, when it was still free to have them do the transfer --
very happy with groups.io!

Recently another group I am involved in has
migrated to without trauma,
but the list history remains on yahoo.

Ugh, that way lies headaches. First off it has accessibility issues for blind folks. (you know, like me) But I've heard a *lot* of grumbling in the past couple of years about the way Google groups handles messages.
Please, let's no go that route.

That's a good point.? How do you rate the groups.io site for accessibility, Nicole?

If I turn off styles (CSS) in Waterfox (based on Firefox), the page layout stays nice and readable for the pages I've seen so far, without lots of menu links to fight through first - so that looks promising.

I seem to remember reading about Google defending their legal right to NOT make their sites and services accessible, which just seems outrageous, if true.?

If a company commits to keeping things as accessible as possible for blind or deaf people, for example, that also makes it more likely that the rest of us won't run into problems using an old or obscure browser, or a computer that's considered obsolete or underpowered.

- Andy

Hi gesine_catnation,

That's a very generous offer, but I wonder if the group, and associated files hordes, would fit in the free 1GB?

I haven't seen DX_Files (it doesn't let me in), so I don't know how much is in there, or how much has been added recently, but it seems most files were added a while ago, when file storage was much more precious - so, it seems like there's a good chance it all fits in 1GB.? Given the maturity of the discussion, maybe there's not much more to add to that section?

The thing that bothers me is that once someone starts paying for the group to be hosted somewhere, the funds have to be found again every year, or the group dies.? That might be hard to guarantee.? If it can be hosted for free, that might actually be a better way to ensure it lives forever... or a larger fraction of forever.

- Andy

开云体育 is fine. I don't go to the sites much -- I'm still using POP3/SMTP for my multiple email accounts, and I've got Outlook set up where I can stand its quirks.
Any company that's trying to justify inaccessibility is also having to justify not selling anything to the single largest employer in the world, the U.S. Government, along with the other governments and agencies and the entire education system. Those economics don't make much sense to me, but I'm not a high pay economist working for a major company, so what do I know?

Hi Andy,

It looks like the fee is for one year for a premium account. It can be changed back to basic after the year.

Here is what the wiki page states :
The cost is $110 USD per year for a Premium account. This allows you to use the groups.io transfer agent. You can change back to Basic after the year if you wish.

Best.

Hi Jo?l,

Fair enough.? I missed seeing that part.

That seems like a reasonable plan than - not that it's up to me :)

Hi,

How can I apply to join ? I don't see any button to ask an admin for registering on it. I'd like to do a backup of it also. It's the last Yamaha DX group I haven't backuped yet.

Cheers,

Jonas

You can email yamahadxfiles-owner@... and ask to be added manually.

I got a reply quickly.? It didn't actually work, in my case, because apparently I'd already been added, but the group doesn't show in my list of groups, I can't log in, and I still get the error message:

"
Oops!
You need to be a member to perform this action.
"

Still, you might have more luck than me, and it seems that's the only way.

It looks like ALL Yahoo groups need to move? I’m seeing this from other lists... so, we have no choice, right?

Correct, Edward.

If you look at the group, or any group, on the Yahoo website, you should see a yellow banner, near the top of the page, which says:

Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Sending/Receiving email functionality is not going away, you can continue to communicate via any email client with your group members.

So, all Yahoo groups will soon just be mailing lists, with no history or file storage.
