DX9 - 4op elder statesman (sysex and videos)

??? ? <----- click here for a google share with videos and sysex from my DX9.

I have to admit - back in the day when I had a DX21, during the 80s, I went over a work colleagues home as he had told me that he had a DX9 in the living room.? I was intrigued.? I think I probably laughed until he told me it was 16 note polyphonic and has access to all of the fine tune ratios that the DX21 didn't ( boo !!!! ).? ? Wasn't until March 2020 that I got one for myself and am pleasantly surprised.? ?Since then I have been making my own patches and modifying those that load from mk1 DX7 patches.? The DX9 shares a similar engine to the original DX7.? I have some videos that demo the DX9 sounds through a behringer foot pedal.? The videos show my laptop desktop which has a Reaper spectrum analyser running.? The videos have been posted to youtube but they are also on a google drive share along with the sysex.? If any of you want to audition the sysex it will work on a DX9 and probably on an original DX7.?

If anyone has any amazing DX7 mk1 patches they would like to share with me, I wouldn't mind having a bash at seeing how they load on the DX9.? I have noticed that very few of the public domain sysex loads on the DX9.? Probably as they use parameters like fixed ratios that the DX9 can't work out perhaps???

??? ??

I owned a DX9 back in the '80s.? It was a fine synth in its own right, and quite a bit less costly -- something that appealed to a guy who already owned 5-6 synths. <g>? The 4-op vs 6-op structure isn't as big a deal as some make it out to be for classic FM timbres.? The lack of velocity sensitivity can be a bigger issue to some.

Hi,
I've worked out why most of the DX7 sysex won't load on the DX9.? Looking at the sysex through a hex editor I can see the name of each patch, just above that there is a string of "32,32,32,32" which translates as "50,50,50,50" and I worked that out to be the last part of the pitch envelope parameters.? Directly after that there are two bytes that represent the algorithm and the feedback level.? ? The DX9 can only convert DX7 files if they are from algorithms 1,5,7,8,14,22,31, and 32.? When looking at the raw file I have to remember to minus 1 from the actual DX7 algorithm? (00 is Algorithm 1, 0D will be Algorithm 14 etc...),? so what I have to do is open up the dx7 raw files and look for certain algorithms that I know the DX9 can convert, then copy those chunks of code to their own ".dx7" files, and then get dxconvert to read those dx7 files and convert them to sysex and forcing the MIDI channel to be 1.? ?Not sure yet if all of the special characters in the dx7 names will mess things up, but if they do I can easily edit those out.? The hex algorithm numbers I need to look out for are 00,04,06,07,0D,15,1E,1F? phew!!!??

It's (but not very high) on my TODO list to add a special --dx9 output option to make it possible to let DXconvert handle all this more or less automatically. Converting DX7 to DX9 will never be really satisfying though. Those 2 missing operators and 24 missing algorithms really make a huge difference.
