"clanky" 80's bass - Thanks!

Chris

Hello Group -

Just wanted to say 'Thanks' to Hallvard Tangeraas and Bob (BoBTronic)
for helping me find that great bass patch. I have loaded the
BASS1.SYX patch into my TX802 and this is exactly the sound I was
looking for!

I got this classic bass sound going under a LinnDrum groove, the DX
Rhodes sound layered with some Oberheim OB-8 and finished the whole
thing off with some Simmons tom fills - it was just like being back
in 1985! (not that I'm living in the past or anything :-)

Thanks again,
-Chris

Hi,

Here is this "Bass1" soundpatch. It is in Sysex format.
Hope this helps.

Bob

I'm hoping that you can help me: I'm looking for a "clanky"
metallic-
but-warm bass sound that was from the original DX-7. Kinda
like a
picked, electric bass, this sound (and variations of it) was
used on
hundreds of 80's tracks (When I Think Of You by Janet Jackson,
Tarzan
Boy by Baltimora, etc.) and was so popular it was even
available on
an EPROM chip for the 360-Sytems MIDI-Bass.
Yes, I know exactly which bass you're talking about as I too
looked
around for this sound a few years back. It wasn't until I got
my hands
on a DX-7 that I found out it was a preset from Yamaha which
came in
one of the ROM cartridges.
Unfortunately I don't have my equipment set up for the time
being, or
else I could mail you a sysex dump which you could load into
your
TX-802, but this sound is easily found on the net (actually I
donwloaded lots of presets from somewhere myself, forgot where
though).

Sorry I couldn't be of much help with supplying the actual
sound, but
if someone else can help, the sound is from the Yamaha ROM
cartridge
no. 1 (Master group/Keyboard & plucked group).

The cartridge switch has to be set to "A" (Master group), and
the
sound
is preset no. 15 ("BASS 1").
There are also some other great presents on that cartridge
which you
no
doubt have heard before: preset 26 ("TUB BELLS"), preset 22
("MARIMBA") and preset 24 ("FLUTE 1") to mention a few.

Note: when importing DX-7 sounds into your TX-802 the sound
will be a
lot more "open filtered", unlike what you've heard on
recordings etc.
This is because the DX-7 only has a max. velocity of up to 100
(I
think) as opposed to 127 which is the proper MIDI standard, so
you
might need to adjust the keyboard velocity settings of your TX-
802, or
play softer than you normally would.
I also have a TX-802 myself -a GREAT module which does
everything the
DX-7 does and more, with less noise!

Let's hear it then

it might be a strange question, but lately Iam listening to a song
with an extremely cool DX7 sound, at least I think, that that sound
comes from a DX7. My question now is, can someone give it a listen and
tell me wether Iam right or not, and is somebody interested in helping
me to find out, how to program that sound? I will make a mp3 of the
short section where the sound can be heard clearly, and sent it to
people who are interested.

transmitting aftertouch data?

Is there a pedal I can use with my DX7II to transmit aftertouch data (thru FC1 or FC2)? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: FB-01 sounds

Gwydion Elderwyn

Thanks, but these all lead me to those banks that are in .MDX format.
What the heck is .MDX?? Does anyone know how to dump a .mdx bank into
the FB-01?
There was an FB-01 editor for the Atari ST - I *think* the file format MDX
was used by that, but gosh it's a long time ago now and I don't have an ST
any more.

Re: Yamaha DX11

Fran?ois Jacques

Hi there,

I also have a DX-11, I had it for about 10 years now. As the manual will teach you, it is 100% compatible with the TX81Z patches and somewhat compatible with DX21 to DX100 synth patches. Highly (too much?) programmable =) The voices that came with it are mostly crappy, so before you start bitching about it's poor patch quality, try 3rd party patches first !

Both the TX81Z and DX11 are available at the URL Summo sent us. I've looking for patches for the DX11/TX81Z and found plenty but haven't had the time to test them. If anybody has some recommendation for a good set of DX11/TX81Z patches, that would be highly appreciated.

BTW, I would suggest a repository for DX11/TX81Z patches in the files section. Yes, Yamaha provides patches on their UK Vintage Synth download page, but who knows when they'll pull the plug on that page. A repository on yahoo would make it easier for other musicians to quickly find patches (say, instead of searching on Google!) and sort out the good ones from the bad ones. What other DX11 owners think?

Ciao!
Francois
