DX7, DX100, DX21,etc. compatibility
Nathan I Smutz
It seems that I've heard that the DX7 can load patches made for the
earlier 4 operator DX synths. I don't know about direct dumps from one machine to another but the sysex files might be compatible. That's easy enough to check. Loading sysex from different 4 op synths might work fine too. I read that one ( might have been the TX81z) would just ignore pitch envelope information (it didn't have a pitch envelope). I think sysex dump is not possible. Spending some time learning about both synths and parameter ranges should allow you

to get a decent manual conversion. I think the DX100 has only Sine waves, right? Not 8 waveform choices like on the TX81z? If you have FM synth/patch that has waveforms that are not sine, then this is impractical (if even possible) to convert to a 6-op (or 8-op: FS1r) synth. But if the waveform is sine, then you should be able to mute the extra operators on a higher-operator synth. This is the technique Yamaha used to transfer DX7/TX802 6-op sounds to the FS1r, which has an incredible 8-operators. Interestingly, the FS1r can recieve sysex from DX7 synths, and it automatically mutes the extra 2 operators. THe FS1r is one of the most incredible synths ever made. Very underrated. And you can buy them for $350-$500 on ebay. One of the best purchases I ever made. Very underrated and unknown synth. Shayme ----- Original Message -----

i think its not possible directly but i bet it's possible to convert patches from DX100 to DX7 cause , DX100 's got 4 operators and 8 (if i remember correctly ? ) algorithms for operators routing so , if u "disable" 2 operators on DX7 (u dont use last 2 operators for instance) ,u 're having 4 operators and same number of possible algorithms :) but i think envelope and some other settings 're different,so u have to "convert" them somehow to nearest settings on DX7.. uhm okay why to do it anyway ?? cause of that kickass "Solid Bass" factory patch on DX100 ! well atleast i love it...one organ patch too on DX100 if anyone's got DX100 or similar i would like to have these Solid bass parameters ,to try to recreate that on mine TX802 :) i readed smth about it on : but i almost fall asleep so i'll try to read about conversion there. i repeat if someone's got DX100 or similar handy please, please send me "Solid Bass" factory patch parameters (and draw algorithm it uses so i know which one to turn on on my TX ) if i suceed i'll post procedure here greetingz to all FM lunatics :) --- In YamahaDX@..., robsonls@c... wrote:

Re: DX7
Try some auction sites, i think you'll have the best luck there.

Re: Digest Number 15

I haven't played with a DX100. I do have a DX7II with a breath
controller. You might try using a breath controller. Look for sounds that have " BC " or " BC1 " (breath controller) in their names. On the DX7 you have to set the keyboard to use the breath controller, even if the sound has BC in the title. Find the Breath controller section and set "EG bias" to 99, also, if there is a Pitch Bias parameter try setting it to 1 to give a little change in pitch as you play louder. Patches generaly have to be set up to use breath controll (MIDI controller C002 or somthing like that if you're controlling another synth). If you get interested in this you might check out www.windsynth.org this outfit is mainly devoted to saxaphone style MIDI controllers like the Yamaha WX5. I've heard that the pitch and modulation wheels are placed pretty well for using the DX100 as a strap on. I've also heard that the DX100 isn't velosity sensitive. The DX100 uses a truncated form of the kind of FM synthesis that the DX7 uses. The DX7 can play any sound made for the DX100 but the DX100 might be able to make sound from some DX7 patches but they might not sound the same. Sombody correct me if I'm wrong about the lack of velosity. Re: DX-100 as a MIDI Controller
Jay Ricketts
Is the DX-100 a good MIDI controller? I think it has breath control, is that useful? Also, canI haven't seen a DX-100 for years, but if I remember right (1) the keys were not full sized, and (2) it was not velocity sensitive. It seems to me that (if I'm right about 1 & 2) it would only be useful in a very limited set of circumstances - breath controller work, maybe - if your fingers are smaller than mine - and I'm guessing there aren't too many non-Yamaha modules that respond to breath control. I don't know about switching channels. And you didn't ask about the sounds, but they were the 4-op version (DX-9, 21, etc.) - never heard much I liked from those, though I do like my 4-op TQ-5 - it had waveform choices for each operator. The Harmony Central reviews liked it okay, but mostly for its sounds (maybe I've been spoiled by my TX-7s?) - one mentioned velocity sensitivity in reference to programming, BUT, Yamaha would sometimes give you velocity sensitive sounds with a keyboard that didn't send velocity info. Looks like they're selling between $150 and $200 US. Somebody mentioned strapping it on (it's small enough) - it's way portable, and could be used as a sound module, and can use DX-9 patches (there are sites you can download from). So, as a multi-purpose little-bit-of-everything toy, it could be useful. As a dedicated controller, I don't think so (though the strap-on idea sounds pretty cool). Good luck. Jay |
What I do with my DX.
Nathan I Smutz
My DX7II has been a harp (I heavily tweaked a patch called SUSHARP1) and
an organ (somewhat tweaked a patch caled GEORG) in a local symphony. One of the orchestra members has a big 88 key Yamaha keyboard but the conductor liked the full sound of the DX harp patch. Now we have found out that a french horn player is moving away. The conductor seemed surprisingly receptive to the idea of using a synthesizer and breath controller. Any tips for a novice DXer? Re: Members of other DX list?
ok
i'll start with what i use my dx7 for. i used to use it (with the rest of my arsenal) to make a sort of ambient, leftfield, out there electronic sound with Cubase as my editor. about a year ago a label called <A href=">NOISE FACTORY RECORDS</A> picked me up and i put out an album called "the beauty of strangness" and called myself sparroworange (<A href=">MP3.com - sparroworange</A>). as of late i am more into the lo-fi sound and i've recruited my brother (guitar player) and we've made another album that is, well, more lo-fi and on a completely new level. it will probably be called "hands and knees music". i love my dx7, unlike most of the people i know who think it's an unprogrammable, tinny sounding keyboard. but i've heard some of the most beautiful sounds come out of it and i will always be using it. dx7, my friends. awesome. take care, sparrow |
