problems with programming
I am using sound diver and am getting nowhere with it. I am trying
to set up my DX7 to receive sysex patches. My problem is I can't seem to figure out how to set it up to receive messages. I have no problem with my other synths. The manuel doesn't really say anything about which sequence of buttons to push to set it up to receive. Do I have to initialize the voice first? Does "Midi Ch Info:" need to be on or off? Help!!!!!! I have many sysex voices but no way to transfer them to my synth. |

Re: again: any help on hooking up a TX-7?
Hi,
thanks to you and Bob for the kind help - I will go through. And don't worry - I spefically asked it a s a STUPID question! I had checked all volume settings, incl voice attenuation, but will probably have to dive more into the channel settings, etc. now - I used my KX-88 mostly in simple (purist) settings with the DX100, a Roland U220, and a Emu Proteus - I must have been lucky so far that everything always worked out without a prob... If you use a KX-88 and a TX-7 - what's your set-up beyond that - which editor are you using, which sequencer, hooked up how? watch out for more stupid, but hopefully not as basic questions! Thanks again HC -- On Tue, 27 Mar 2001 19:48:47 Jay wrote: --- In YamahaDX@y..., "HC" <hcmetz@m...> wrote:Stupid question therefore: Do I have to have a DX-7 or DX-9keyboard to make the TX-7 work? I've3 driven a pair of TX-7s with a KX-88 for 15 years! So it can definitely be done... -->Did you Connect your KX midi out to your TX midi in? -->Did you make sure your KX is transmitting on the same channel the TX is receiving on? -->Did you try putting the TX in Omni mode? -->Did you try sending program change info (make sure your TX is set up to receive program changes!)? If so, did the patch change successfully? -->Are you sure your audio is set up right? -->Are you sure the volume's up on your TX? Sorry if some of these seem like "duh" questions - but these are some of the things I've had to do in 15 years with my TXs. Good luck! Jay |
Re: Yamaha DX7 with Split keyboard, arpegiator and lots of banks
When it starts up, it states 'MAXsystems SUPERMAX (A)'Here's the manual: __________________ First page: installation instructions with pictures - not scanned. DESCRIPTION SUPER MAX has 512 memories (16 BANKS) and you can store in each memory: the sound + all the parameters of the normal DX7 functions + the parameters of SUPER MAX new functions. The programmable functions are : DX7 FUNCTIONS ..... : POLY/MONO - PITCH BEND (RANGE and STEP) - PORTAMENTO (MODE, GLISSANDO and TIME) - (RANGE, PITCH, AMPLITUDE and EG BIAS) for MODULATION WHEEL, FOOT CONTROL, BREATH CONTROL and AFTERTOUCH. SUPER MAX FUNCTIONS : MASTER VOLUME - LIMIT KEY L and H - MIDI KEY OUT - ARPEGGIATOR preset number - DELAY TIME - DELAY VOLUME - DELAY FDBACK - DELAY P.T. - DELAY HOLD - STACK MODE [VOLUME (2,3 and 4) - COARSE (2,3 and 4) - FINE (2, 3 and 4) ] - ROLLING MODE/ SOUND CREATOR/VELOCITY XSWITCH [CONT - PATCH (2, 3 and 4) ]. You can SAVE a complete BANK of 32 sounds and functions to any RAM cartridge. You can SAVE in 3 possible FORMATS: SUPER MAX FORMAT, DX-MAX FORMAT or standard DX7 FORMAT. When you LOAD a cartridge SUPER MAX is able to recognise the right FORMAT automatically. If the cartridge is in DX-MAX FORMAT all the functions that DX-MAX ignores are set to "0"; if it is in DX7 FORMAT the default values are those which are in the EDIT BUFFER, so if you want to load a cartridge with a DX7 FORMAT, prepare the EDIT BUFFER with the values you want and all the 32 memorles will be initialised with these values. You have to do the same for a MIDI RECEIPT. The MIDI TRANSMIT only sends the voice memories. OPERATION The new functions are accessible by pressing the button no.13 which is the PAGE CHANGE function. PAGE 1 is the normal DX7 function list + MEMORY BANK select in no.12. PAGE 2 is the SUPER MAX function list and contains : 1 - ARPEGGIATOR ........: 1 to 32. Select the arpeggiator that you want to set. 2 - " MODE ..........: UP, DOWN, UP&DOWN, FORWARD ASSIGN, BACKWARD ASSIGN, RANDOM. OFF 3 - " LATCH ........ : OFF, AUTO (holds the arpeggio of the last notes played) or EXTEND (all the notes played are memorised in the arpeggio even if they are released). 4 - " VELOCITY ...... : PLAYED, FIXED, RANDOM (randomised on the middle range) or RANDOM+ (randomised on the full velocity range). 5 - " NUMBER OF EXTENSIONS : 0 to 7. The number of times that a note is repeated/transposed or an arpeggio transposed. 6 - " EXTENSION MODE : - REPEAT Each note is repeated as many times as chosen in function no.5. - RANDOM The number of repetitions is random (the maximum value is the one chosen in no.5). - ROTATE The whole arpeggio is transposed as many times as chosen in no.5). - EVOLUTION The same as ROTATE but the notes of the arpeggio are transposed only one after the other. 7 - " INTERVAL ...... : 0 to 12 by semi-tones. Interval of transposition for each extension. 8 - " KEY LIMIT ..... : You press once to set the lowest key limit of the chosen keyboard zone for the arpeggiator amd twice for the highest. 9 - " GATE TIME ..... : 1/2,1/4,1/8 or 1/16. 10- " TEMPO ......... : 4O to 24O, MlDI/4, MIDI/2, MIDI, MIDIx2 or MIDIx4. 11- MAX CONTROL ARPEGGIATOR : - 1 All the sounds use arpeggiator no.1 because it is not always an advantage to have the arpeggiator programmable. - RAM Each sound has its own arpeggiator (chosen in function no.21). 12- MAX CONTROL KEY CONTROL : - OFF Means that the keyboard doesn't control the DX7. - RAM Each sound has its own keyboard zone chosen in function no.18 and MIDI KEY OUT mode chosen in function no.l9. - NORMAL The keyboard zone and the MIDI key out mode that you set is the same for all sounds. 13- ............................. PAGE CHANGE .................... 14- TEMPERAMENT ............. : 1 to 4. Select the keyboard temperament. 15- " COARSE ............. : 0 to 127. You play the note that you want to tune. The note and its exact tuning are displayed; then you set the value with the parameter slider or the +/- button. 16- " FINE ............... : 0 to 99 cents. 17- MASTER VOLUME ........... : 0 to 7. Programmable for each sound. 18- KEY LIMIT ............... : You press once to set the lowest key limit (L) and twice for the highest (H). From C-2 to G8. 19- MIDI KEY OUT ............ : You can set MIDI OUT for either all the keyboard, the middle, the right part, the left part or the left and the right parts of the keyboard zone set in function no.18. You can send the delay as well or instead of the arpeggiator. Be aware that it sends a MIDI DELAY which means that you can't have feedback and the decrease in volume in MIDI OUT at the same time. 20- MIDI CHANNEL OUT ........ : 1 to 16. 21- ARPEGGIATOR ............. : You can choose any of the 32 preset arpeggiators for each sound. You must set one of the arpeggiators to mode OFF to be able to get sounds with the arpeggiator inactive. 22- DELAY TIME .............. : 10 to 9930 ms. 23- " VOLUME ............ : 0 to 3. When the volume is set to "0" the delay is OFF. 24- " FDBACK ........... : 0 to 15. Don't forget that the DX7 is only 16-note polyphonic and that the delay uses up polyphony. However, the feedback is really effective and it's exceptional to need a lot of feedback. 25 " PITCH TRANSPOSE ... : The pitch is raised with the value set with each repeat. There are 2 scales: one by cents (0 to 50) and one by semitones from 1 to 12. 26- " HOLD .............. : ON - OFF. You can re-initialise it by pressing YES/+l. 27- STACK MODE VOLUME ....... : O to 3. A voice is used when the volume is not 0. You press 1, 2 or 3 times to select the 2nd, the 3rd or the 4th voice. Stack mode is set automatically: if all the voices are set to "0", the mode is 16x1 voice: if one voice is not 0 then the mode is 8x2 voices: if 2 voices are not 0, the mode is 5x3 voices: if no voice is 0, the mode is 4x4 voices. 28- STACK MODE COARSE ....... : - 24 to + 24 semi-tones. You press several times to set the different voices, as in 27. 29- STACK MODE FINE ......... : 0 to 99 cents. Press as meany times as required. 30- ROLLING MODE ............ : This gives you the ability to choose 4 different sounds, as follows:- SOUND CREATOR Gives you the possibility to create all the sounds that exist between 2 difEerent sounds. Don't forget that the DX7 uses FM synthesis which means that you can get unexpected sounds between the 2 chosen sounds. YOU CAN STORE THE RESULT. VELOCITY XSWITCH Allows you to change a sound to another with velocity. Interesting when used with velocity modes of the arpeggiator. CONTROL - If you are in:- ROLLING MODE : -OFF -WHEEL You can have 4 different sounds with the modulation wheel, from the basic sound to 3 other sounds chosen in function no.32. -P.BEND The basic sound is given in the central position and you can have the 2nd or the 3rd going up or down. -RANDOM You get any of the 4 sounds at random. -ROTATE The sound changes with each "key on" in the order chosen in Function 32. SOUND CREATOR: -OFF -WHEEL You start from a sound and you go to the 2nd sound chosen in no.32 going through the 126 possible sounds existing between them. -P.BEND The same as WHEEL but from the basic sound to the 2nd when you go up and to a 3rd when you go down. -RANDOM A SAMPLE/HOLD selects any of the values between the 2 sounds at random VELOCITY XSWITCH: OFF - 1 to 7 different values to pass from the basic sound to the 2nd one. 32- PATCH SELECT ............ : You can choose any of the 32 sounds in the bank. You press once to choose the 2nd sound, twice for the 3rd, and 3 times for the 4th. In the VELOCITY XSWITCH mode and the SOUND CREATOR, only the second voice is useful (except on P.BEND, where the 3rd is used as well). COMMENTS If you use a 4x4 STACK mode (volume 2, 3 and 4 are not all set to 0), a delay time set to 10 ms and FEEDBACK set to 15 all at the same time you would need 64 notes in 150ms every time you play a note; as the DX7 is only 16-note polyphonic, SUPER MAX uses them intelligently to allow you to play. But if you play too many notes at the same time or too quickly (especially with the arpeggiator) you could get "clicks" in the sound. You must be aware that when you play a note the voices used by the delay only receive the "KEY OFF" information when the note is released. If you are in MONO MODE, the ARPEGGIATOR, DELAY and STACK MODE don't work, however you can use ROLLING MODE, VELOCITY XSWITCH or the SOUND CREATOR. If "silence" occurs, it could be : - MONO MODE (no.2 page 1) is used with an arpeggiator. - MASTER VOLUME is "O" (no.17). - LIMIT KEY L and/ or H is wrong (no 18). - KEYBOARD CONTROL is OFF (no 12). - ARPEGGIATOR TEMFO is set to a MIDI value without receiving a MIDI clock (no.10). It's important to bear in mind that the arpeggiator that you are using is the one chosen in the function no.21 (except if function no.11 is "1"). If the ARPEGGIATOR doesn't work : - If function no.11 is "1", you just have to verify that the arpeggiator selected in the function no.1 is "1". - If no.11 is set to "RAM" you just have to verify that the arpeggiator chosen in no 21 is the same as in no.1 - ARPEGGIATOR LIMIT KEY L and/ or H is wrong (no.8) - If the ARPEGGIATOR slows down, it is because the processor is too busy to do everything at the same time (especially if DELAY, STACK MODE and ROLLING MODE are all in use, or the SOUND CREATOR which calculates a new sound with every "key on". When the arpeggiator is set to receive MIDI clock, the clock information has priority to allow you to use your MIDI system without a problem of synchronisation. A convenient way to select banks from your now expanded memory is to leave the most recently selected MEMORY BANK (no.12 PAGE 1) in the Function mode. When you return to "play" mode, the data entry control remains live on the memory bank parameter, thus making it easy to access all 512 voices. BEAR IN MIND that it's the same thing for any function which means that, for example, if the most recently selected Function is MAX CONTROL KEY CONTROL (no.12) you could disconnect the keyboard (LOCAL OFF) without knowing the reason but on the other hand it can be very useful with other functions, for example, if the most recent1y selected function is TEMPERAMENT (no 14), you can change the keyboard temperament in "play" mode. |

again: any help on hooking up a TX-7?
Hi,
I am still new to the list and still have the same question: I own a DX-100, a KX-88, and some assorted sound modules and MIDI stuff. I have now bought a TX-7 sound generator, but I cannot get it to work with any of the keyboards. When I hook IN to OUT and OUT to IN of the KX-88, and change voices on the TX-7, it does send out some MIDI feedback to the KX-88 (control lights flicker), so something is transmitted. Every other connection to other MIDI works perfectly fine. Stupid question therefore: Do I have to have a DX-7 or DX-9 keyboard to make the TX-7 work? (I am NOT speaking about patches, loading/saving, etc - I am speaking about getting ANY sound of the TX-7 at all...) The manual is not clear on this... thanks for the help!
