Hello all,
I am new in this group. I have a DX7II and recently bought a Wind controller. I found a lot of useful information here, for which I thank you..
One question: I would love to find a copy of Sal Gallina’s book ‘Expressive FM Applications’. I found a number of references to it in this group (& YamahaDXfiles) and on the Yamaha Musicians forum, but all links to it seem to have evaporated. I did find Sal's patches and audio examples already, but I would like to read the explanations behind the programming, which are in the book.
And a paper copy is currently nowhere available (and often not affordable). Does anyone have a suggestion for me how to get it?

Re: New FM synth

Yep, looks/sounds nice, allows fixed frequency down to 0Hz , pitch envelope per Operator and pretty much free algorithms. Had a rather short mail conversation with the developer.

Might be interesting to take a look at the FMcomposer Tracker Software, I think it's from the same developer and has similar specs.

Re: New FM synth

hello,

i was intrigued by this announcement too, as i saw a potential follower to the tg77 here.
as it only has -at the moment- stereo output, i sent them an email asking for more single outs.
belowis the reply i got, so maybe, if people, who are interested in this, would ask them the same, this would increase the chances of getting them.

best
hans

Hello,

We had a lot of people asking for more outputs so we are reconsidering this.

We'll do our best to add another stereo output pair, so it can be used as two stereo outs or four mono outs (totally configurable within the internal mixer with also features effects dry/wet routing).

USB as an audio interface is not planned at this stage, as it would adds a lot of development costs and maybe an additional controller chip... We're trying as much a possible not to break the upper 1200 euro price limit.

Daniel, It is quite small so you probably won't have to sell any of your other synths! :)

Re: New in this group and question

Vindor,

I'd be interested to read it too, but as I understand it, it's quite a short book - more of a booklet, or pamphlet that accompanies the set of patches on the cassette - but people tend to ask a stupid amount of money for it, which I very much doubt it's worth.

As far as I can tell, it's still under copyright, but not in print, which presumably explains why there are no scans of it shared publicly, and why no one tends to sell it at it's true value - which I guess would really not be very much, if it was still available new.

It seems the publisher that still owns the rights is just sitting on it, and I don't suppose there would be enough volume of sales to interest any others in taking it over.

At the moment, it seems the best you can do is hope someone lists it on ebay for a sensible price, or find it on Amazon, and click the "I want to read this on my Kindle" link - though I doubt there's much chance of them ever converting it.

I think the gist of it is that some parameters can be controlled by Breath or Aftertouch, especially operator levels and LFO amount.? If you look at his patches with something like the TX81Z editor, or JSynthLib, you can see which ones he used.

FWIW, I've tried his patches, and I thought some of the ones that come with the WT11 are better - especially after a bit of tweaking, mostly to reduce the amount of detune, which is a bit overdone in many of them.

Martin Tarenskeen converted those to work on the TX81Z - mostly.? A few don't work because they're performance patches based on voice patches in the ROM, and it's not the same ROM.? A lot of of them work well though.

Hi, Vindor,

this is good address, unfortunately less and less used when I compare with traffic few years ago… That’s sad, but it can’t be revived probably.

I’ve been using WX controllers since 1989, first WX7, later WX5, and last year I purchased also Akai EWI4000S which I wanted for long time. Still I’m searching the old EWI with analog expander.

I have the paper original of that book, but still didn’t find time for scanning it. Few years ago I had an idea to scan and publish old Yamaha AfterTouch magazines, Supplemental Booklets for DX7 II, DX7S, QX3 and some other material to DX and Yamaha community. I could finish this project thanks to the cooperation with some members here who contributed originals as a gift, or sold it to me, and with the great help of our member Rawl Gelinas who also had some material and processed data after the scanning. You can find it on the internet. We still try to get the last two or three missing Supplemental Booklets.

Maybe one day I will scan also Expressive FM Applications…?

I suppose you could find music examples and SYX files on .

Re: MultiBank Cartridge for DX7II and DX7 MKI

Isn't there a way to load different cartridge banks via sysex? So what'd be needed is a translation from the sysex to CC information. That said, I know of no cartridge capable of 128 banks, much less more than that, and cartridges hold 32 patch A and B blocks as available, which is why you can get the 128 patch numbers received from MIDI program change. So it's not going to be optimum no matter how you slice it.
I built my 128 patch map from a lot of sound banks on several floppies back in the day, also using a patch librarian, and I was sort of hard pressed to find enough sounds I wanted on the machine. So I'm thinking the desire for more than a full internal A/B Cartridge A/B patch setup is probably somewhat small. Also, FM7/8 does this, so the need for that many sounds can be handled in other ways.

Actually I need to amend that. I don't have time to look at the manual and schematics at the moment, but I think you could only access 128 patches ("voices") *INTERNALLY* and that would require firmware (OS EPROM change) and hardware (more RAM obviously). Many of the expansions do this.

For the CARTRIDGE slot it's even worse since, as mentioned there are no more signals available across the cartridge connector so quite a few (more) hurdles would be required to overcome that.

Re: MultiBank Cartridge for DX7II and DX7 MKI

I suspected as much, though I didn't know about the hardware limitations for the cartridge port.
So that's sounding like a resounding no to MIDI bank change.

Yes, not only would it require a firmware change for the MIDI commands, but the signals aren't present on the cartridge connector either.

I totally agree that 128 patches is more than enough for most people. 32 is definitely cramped and anything above 128 becomes time-consuming to manage (loading, saving, formatting ... all very slow). 128 also gets you in the sweet spot for access via MIDI Patch Change (you can access them all with no fuss).

Re: MultiBank Cartrdige for DX7II and DX7 MKI

No it is not possible to access banks via MIDI. It must be selected manually.

Re: MultiBank Cartrdige for DX7II and DX7 MKI

You will be able to read patches using an ADP-1, but not save them.
The ADP-1 does not have the connections required for writing to DX7 Mk1 cartridges.

Re: MultiBank Cartridge for DX7II and DX7 MKI

I suspect there'd be no need to use high density controllers for this, as a maximum of 128 banks would be more than enough. But wouldn't this require some recoding of the firmware to make it possible to do this?

Can you access the HCART's additional banks via MIDI Bank Select (MSB: control change 0, LSB: control change 32) messages from a sequencer or suchlike?

I'm not sure , it has not been tested with ADP1 cartridge.
