Re: DX7s mainboard (DM) reborn attempt

It wasn't that work I just solderd some pin headers on the joints of the ROM and put the thing into the EPROMMER to read it.
If I understand the MIDI SYSEX format of the DX7II right, you can receive fractional scaling or microtuning banks directly from a cartridge and can send it. But this makes only sense with RAM5 or RAM6.
It would be interesting to have a little archive of those "complete" Cartridges because most of the stuff you can find in the internet are only the compatible SYSEX banks for the old DX7.

Re: DX7s mainboard (DM) reborn attempt

I'm using this thread because I don't see much about the DX7S here or anywhere. I just revived one that had a blown power supply. I tried to fix it, but the transformer was bad and other issues too. I did locate a replacement for a reasonable price and recapped that one (these old Yamaha power supplies look so bad now .. .SPX90's dying all over the place).

Anyway, I updated the OS to 1.3 and replaced the battery. I also bought a ROM cartridge ($$$) and see that it has been dumped into the files section by clem in 2016. I couldn't find the Sys Ex data for it though.? Just the ROM binary dump.

I have never used one of these and it's quite complex compared to the original DX7. But if anyone wants any Sys Ex dumps or whatever I can try that. The ROM cart has a really oddball 128k x 8 mask ROM that would have been a chore to dump. So, clem did a lot of work to get that data.

Yamaha DX-1 Service

Can anyone recommend a good tech that can look over a Yamaha DX-1 on the West Coast?

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Not-so-dead DX7 Mark I - The saga continues...

Hi guys,

Just following up a week later as I was away after doing the CR2032 coin battery holder installation. Thanks for your patience!

I figured I'd get you guys some revised values before doing anything else.

So, the DX7 has sat unplugged and unused for over a week in its case. I turned it on, and surprisingly enough, there were no E! RAM error messages this time! (However, I'm really waiting for the shoe to drop and to lose all the RAM data all over again.) Maybe I'm lucky and the battery holder fixed it?

Here are the revised values (leaving E! in place, which means I can't access diode D4). CR2032 Battery voltage was measured while plugged into the motherboard.

Off for 1+ week, unplugged.
Batt: 3.08v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28): 2.99v

Turned it on. ***No error message this time.***
Batt: 3.04v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28): 4.92v

Approximately 1 minute after turning it off.
Batt: 3.04v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28): 2.97v

Approximately 30 minutes after turning it back off.
Batt: 3.03v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28):?2.97v

Turned it on again.?***Still no error message this time.***
Batt:?3.04v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28):?4.92v

Approximately 1 minute after turning it off again.
Batt:?3.04v
E! U4 RAM (pins 14 and 28):?2.98v

I don't know if the U4 contacts would suffice to measure the voltage drop after the diode, but if so -- we're talking of a net change of 0.07v to 0.09v instead of the expected 0.2v to 0.3v. Would that indicate a leaky diode? If so, I'm guessing the next step would be to order an?1N34A germanium diode - as that seems both affordable and quickly obtained online as opposed to an OA95?

****
Beyond this, if it fails again, I'll take some re-measurements before doing an?E-ectomy - which seems to be the next test?

Basically, I'd need to source a Mitsubishi M5M5118P-15L for the SRAM off of eBay. Not sure how many SRAM chips I'd need in that case, but I guess I'd see after (and if) I need remove the E! board. (What a PITA to reinstall and get those E! pins reseated correctly!) I could quickly source and drop in an SER-7 EPROM, so that's not an issue. I'd still love to use the E! board if that's not the problem, particularly for full MIDI implementation and other features.

Thanks everyone!

how much and where are u ?

Re: Creating a RAM4 Compatible Cartridge

I still have a few prototype PCBs but you need some experience in soldering

Re: MIDI sysex question

Yes - I have done it with the DX100,and wrote the remote controller for Dx11/100 someplace on my commodore systems, which I don't use - just wanted to see how the remote system operated.

Re: MIDI sysex question

Yes the remote panel button commands work, although I haven't used them myself. There was a recent video of a massive DX7 controller (not Jellinghaus or any commercial ones) that an individual made himself in the 90's (?) and he confirmed that he used those commands during development. I think his final project ended up being a DX7II or DX7S controller though. Great video for it on YouTube released over the past few months if memory serves.

In my snooping around I think I found commands for reading the LCD buffer as well, but that info will require some detective work on my behalf. Probably these were used for Yamaha engineers initially.

Re: MIDI sysex question

Update: ?I found a thread ?DX7 Remote Panel Button Control with a 2016 post by Daniel Forro that answers my remote switch question. ? I can experiment with that for now.

MIDI sysex question

For the DX7 IIs (v1.3 OS), do these MIDI sysex commands do the following:

1) ?Parameter Change ($1B = Switch Remote) ?will "press" the panel buttons?
? ? ? ? a) Do I set ON (d=127) and then OFF (d=0) ? ? ?
? ? ? ? b) Leaving button ON would allow me to "press and hold" a button while "pressing" another?

2) This "switch remote" method would allow me to do the following:
? ? a) Select Voice (button 32) or Performance (button 37)?
? ? ? ? b) Save internal memory bank (Voice/Performance) to RAM cartridge (several buttons)?

3) Can I "bulk load" Voice/Performance MIDI sysex data directly to a RAM cartridge bank?
Or bank?needs to be loaded into Internal Voice/Performance memory first then saved to cartridge?
? ? ? ? I think that cartridge Micro Tuning and Fractional Scaling are supported, but not voice/performance?

I did some searching prior to posting this and did not find my answers. ?
But if there is a relevant post, please point me to it.?

Thanks for reading,
Mike

TX81z issues with saving patches

Hello,

Recently I bought an old TX81z, and have problems with saving patches at user bank I.

When I press STORE button (and keep pressing) I select the available slot in user bank I, and when I release the STORE button usually nothing happens. The next step would be to confirm the copy with YES button, but I was available to reach that step only once in several dozens attempts.

The problem might that some of the front buttons are little "skippy".

The rest of the machine functions ok, software editing, sending sysex, battery, all ok.

Thanx,

Vlado

hI do you have more pcb for ram 6 i am interested?
best regards?

Re: DX7 ROM Card with 256 x 32 patches

Hi Ant,

I bought 4 boards from you and finally started using them.? :)? I made one the "normal" way and have it in the case you designed.? I also made one without a case but turned the dial and switch toward the user. Great stuff!! (except for the wait time to format and load 8 banks lol).

Anyway I'm going to build up and sell the last two I have. What do I do about the STL file? Can I give that out or not? The cases are way too expensive for me to order then resell.

Re: Not-so-dead DX7 Mark I - The saga continues...

(2) The voltage across the battery backed SRAM supply pins should be at 5v minus the voltage drop across the diode in the path from 5v to the battery (not sure about the exact value since the circuit is more than just a diode if memory serves). So with the power on, I would expect pin 28 on those SRAMs to be over 4v, probably quite a bit over.

If you have a meter, and you do, remove the battery and test any suspect diodes with the diode checker function.

Then test continuity of the circuit from the battery to the diode, then from the diode to the sram power pins on the main board, then put the E in and check the continuity from the same point to pin 28 on the E srams.?

I don't suppose you have the parts to do an E!-ectomy?? ie. restore the DX7 to original state? Then test?

Those expansions are notorious for connection issues because many of them used the wrong style of pin for inserting into the sockets on the DX7 main board.

3.25V on U4 with unit OFF sounds suspiciously high. It should be more like 3.00V if the battery is 3.31V. The germanium diode should drop it about 0.2 to 0.3V. It sounds like maybe some capacitor somewhere did not have time to discharge yet after you turned it off. The most important thing here is the voltage on U4 after about 15 minutes. Can you turn it off and watch the voltage there for a few minutes to see where it ends up after 15 minutes?

Hi guys - Sorry for the very delayed follow-up. Lots of stuff got in the way this past month. I think diode D4 is good, but I figured I'd see if you guys could confirm this.

?
I finally opened the DX7 back open, and here were my voltages:
?
(1) With the unit powered OFF:
?
Battery: 3.31v
E! Grey Matter RAM chip U4 (pins 14 and 28): 3.25v
Diode D4 3.25v
?
(2) With the unit powered ON:
?
Battery: 3.31v
E! Grey Matter RAM chip U4 (pins 14 and 28): 3.25v
Diode D4 4.93v
?
(3) I also did a quick retest the unit powered OFF (about 24 hours later). The battery was accidentally drained a bit due to my accidentally shorting it for a few minutes during the CR2032 battery holder installation. Hopefully these are the correctly recorded values:
?
With the unit powered ON:
?
Battery: 2.83v (a bit drained as I just mentioned)
E! Grey Matter RAM chip U4 (pins 14 and 28): 3.25v
Diode D4 ¡ª INACCESSIBLE under Grey Matter board
?
NOTE: D4 was measured with the E! board removed, as you can't access it otherwise. Test points were from one end of the diode and the transistor that it leads to (as you can't access the other side of the diode without removing the motherboard).
?
So does this mean that Diode D4 is actually fine after all?
?
Again, it loses its memory after 15 minutes or so and still has the same error message/symptoms. Just trying to figure out the next steps here.
?
Thanks again, everyone!

Re: DX7s main board connectors?

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay - I've been really busy doing real paid work!

I did look into making a version of my RAM-1 cartridge with a connector to fit the DX7 II slot, effectively having an ADP-1 built in. To this end I bought an ADP-1 and tried to work out what it did. I re-sold the ADP-1 after I established that cartridges can only be read, not written using an ADP-1. (I also don't have a DX7 II)

I did, however, work out most of the internal connections and made a spreadsheet. I hope this helps:

Re: TX81Z LCD repair?

Probably.? Most LCD modules are compatible with a particular controller chip.

I think I've seen replacement LCD panels for them on ebay, with different colour backlights.... There's a blue backlit OLED one on at the moment - item number 223465499491, on ebay.co.uk.? You can paste an item number into the Search box.

So, yes, they are out there.? Maybe one of the sellers of replacements knows more about them.
