Does Function+16+32 tell you the ROM version? If it's an old one
then I agree with an updated ROM. I wouldn't add a complex expansion
until things are well understood in the vanilla unit.

Good luck! Replacing the ROM chip with something newer (either stock 1.8 or the french superMax board on ebay) sounds like the way to go.
