Here is his reply re. shielding:

All our cables come with an aluminum foil sheilding.
This normally provides enough protection. Kevin

Did not email the seller asking if they were shielded or not.
Based on early posts in this forum, I went with the Imagewriter
extension cable.
For the price I figure I can always add clamp-on rf suppression if
there's any problem. Will probably add a couple even if there's no
problem, just to be sure.

For those looking for ready-made extension cables for your FC-40, I found these on Ebay. Guy should have 12 left (at time of post) and is only getting $11+ including shipping
These are 25 ft long and should work according to what I've read here

Ah well, never mind. it would be nice to see a drawing too if the wires don't show up well .... my 80m loop uses black covered wire, same photographic challenge!

Hi Clive

I posted 3 images in the photos section. All I could show was the
ladder loc centre piece, the ladder line coming down from the tree
into my shack and the FC40 in situ on the shack wall. The wire on
the antenna itself is hard to see even with the naked eye never mind
with a camera. I suppose it helps with the stealth factor !

FC-40 with Doublet Antenna

mi5utc

Hello group

I have just made up a doublet antenna, 102ft top with a ladder loc
from radio works fed by approx 30ft 450ohm ladderline connected
directly to the rf hot and ground terminals. The antenna inverts
slightly downwards due to my space restrictions and the dipole centre
is supported by the branch of a strong tree in my garden at approx
40ft above the ground. The FC-40 tunes from top band to 6m with the
exception of 10m. I am not too worried about 10m as I have an Antron
for 10.

During a good 6m opening on 21st MAY I worked 25 calls in 5 countries
in less than 1/2 hour with 59 + reports.

A simple and inexpensive antenna for the FC-40.

FC-40 with Other Rigs?

doc

May the FC-40 be used with rigs other than
the FT-897?

I hope to acquire a FT-897d soon but also
have a TenTec 580 Delta.

Any special interfaces needed to use it with
a TenTec?

Sure but, you can also get extention cables too.? Check the archives.

Yes I tried ladder line (approx 17ft) from the tuner to one of the
lower corners and it worked a treat. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Loop antennas fed with ladderline

I know there is a formula for it, I do not know it. All I did was
use as long of a piece that I could keep vertical which ended up
being 25 foot. So do the same, run a piece of ladder line from your
tuner to your delta loop and try that, you may be suprised.

Hi Syd,

They work fine with Ladder Line feed, just keep the ladder line
away
from conducting surfaces, from your description this should not
be
a
problem. Alternatively extend the control line, I would try the
ladder
line first though.

?
I let the connector dry and?the radio and tuner?work OK.? So I am going to have to wrap up the connection better this time.? But glad it is OK.
?
Did not use WD-40, but would have thought it would have been OK, seeing as it is supposed to displace water.?
?
Thanks to all who replied.

Hi, the rusty connector diagnosis makes sense; I had a similar problem
avec water in the control cable connector.? I dried it out and then
sealed the area with putty and then wrapped it with vulcanizing tape.?
No problems during a long wet, salty winter.

I would however recommend against WD-40 on the connector.

WD-40 has silicone in it that can interfere with conductivity, and it
will trap dirt.
Although I might get flamed, I always liked freon-12; it was cheap, it
would clean almost anything and it was so volatile that if water was
present, it would aggressively dry the area with no residue.
Check your local electronic store to see what they have.? You might find
a spray can of something that you can use.
