FT8 - HELP!!! 14
hi is anyone using the 847 for FT8. I've connected sound card to data in/out PTT is via CAT. i can RX stations with both JTDX and WSJT. When I hit tune the rig goes into TX but no power output..... its as if the audio isn't getting into the rig. As i am using CAT for PTT I haven't wired PTT to the tip of the data connector....is this my problem? HELP! 73 de Rob G4UJS

International Space Station (ISS) 3
Hi I've never used the satellite facility on the FT-847. How does one set it up to work through the FM Repeater on the ISS. Is it possible to save the CTCSS Tone on the uplink? Any guidance would be appreciated. Regards Rob G4UJS

RigExpert Ti-3000 10
I recently bought a RigExpert Ti-3000 to use with my Icom IC-7000 but I'd also like to use it with my 847. Unfortunately RigExpert don't make a suitable cable for the 847, no idea why, but they have given me a diagram explaining how to build one. Has anyone any experience with building a cable and can explain how to connect the 3.5mm jack?

Reissue of Winlink and the FT-847
Hi Folks, On August 5, 2021 message #214 I had written the following message: "I am having a problem originating a message. Before I waste anyone's I would like to ask the following question of the group before proceeding. Is there anyone who has successfully installed and can run WinLink psp and Gateway messages without using CAT using a Yaesu FT-847?" I received a reply from A Greg D. that I had a difficult time understanding as I am still new to Amateur Radio. The mistake I made was not letting him know. Worse yet after reviewing the message I noted I missed the last line he wrote: "Or just buy a Signalink interface..." With hat in had and apologizes I need to state that I have a SignaLink for awhile now. I originally purchased it in order to run fldigi which works flawlessly. The problem I am having is I originating a message using P2P and using channel selection. If someone else originates a message I can do a P2P sometimes. It makes no difference whether I use VARA HF or ARDOP same problem. Telnet works fine. I have since learned that a fellow Ham with the same radio and SignaLink has the same problem with fldigi working correctly. I would like to get WinLink working so I can get involved with them. It's another tool for my Ham Radio tool box when things go belly up. Thank You, Steven/kc3dow

Need help with this site please.
Good morning Everyone. As the primary owner of this groupe, I have one moderator and a part time owner who is in concurance with me. We need someone to become a full partner with us, this is in case one or both of us go to the Great Ham Shack in the Sky somoe can actually do something on the board. Either with moderator privledges or as owner. Bill hasd said he doesn't mind being here, however, he and I are getting to that age. And as the primary owner, I am not in good enough health to tell you I'll be here tomorrow. I'm not sending this as a sob story, but I want to see this group of the Yaesu FT-847 keep open where people can ask questions on the great 847. You can either replie here or send me an email at n4mav1@.... Either way I'll get it. Please be aware that I probably not answer right then. I don't hang out on the cvomputer much after noon unless it is importent. I have a life to life on the outside sometimes. :) I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas Holiday and a wonderful New Year coming up! 73 and thank for any help on here. FT847 TCXO-9 mod by ON6AB 3
Hi, I did the TCXO-9 mod on my FT847 but a little differently (and easier) as to what's already on the internet. It is performing fine and I did not find any unwanted side effects. If you're interested, drop me a mail and I will send it to you. bruno.beckers@... I wanted to upload it to the files menu but that seems to be impossible. 73, Bruno

PCB to use FT817/857/897 CW filters in the FT847
Hi, I made a simple Eurocard prototype pcb to be able to use an FT817/857/897 CW filter in the FT847. The file is added to the files/mod directory.

Need Guide to Use FT-847 For Digital Modes 10
Greetings. I know it probably has been discussed an unknown number of times previously, but I want to start using my 847 in the digital modes, both on HF as well as 6M + VHF/UHF. I want the members here to create the Ultimate FT-847 Digital Guide. Let me take a moment to describe my setup - I have separate antennas and amplifiers for each output on the 847. Each amp is hard-keyed by the 847, via a special breakout cable I obtained on ebay. It works great. I don't want to use the mic input on the front of the radio for data, I have a mic connected there and I don't want to be switching cables for different bands. I have a laptop running JTDX and FLDigi, I would like to use CAT control to manage frequencies, but it is not cast in stone. I know how to push buttons and spin the dial... I use Log4OM v.2 for logging, and I use JTAlert for needed entities alerts. I have all three (minus FLDigi) apps integrated with each other to work seamlessly. The big unknown is the FT-847. I would like suggestions on how to integrate the computer with the radio so that I can feed it from the ports on the back and manage the drive and the ALC from the front. The laptop has an internal sound card that I feed some speakers with to hear the alerts, and an inexpensive USB sound card to feed the radio. If at all possible I would like to use CAT control to switch frequencies and modes, but so far that has been problematic for me, so suggestions there wouldn't hurt. In the end I would like to compile all the suggestions and guides into one document and upload it to the Files section so that others don't need to reinvent the wheel each time they dig into digital with the FT-847. Thanks in advance. Micky K1XH

Replacement parts needed. 8
Greetings. I need to replace the components (encoders?) for the SUB-TUNE and MEM/VFO CH controls on my rig. It got dropped and the shafts broke off. I MIGHT be able to glue/epoxy one of the shafts together, but the other is irreparable. The PC board IDs are S6531 and S6538, but that's the best I can do for identification. Any hints on what parts I might search on at DigiKey or Mouser or whatever would be appreciated. 73 Brad, N7IVV

Dodgy Rotary switch 3
Hi All, I have one little problem with my 847.the MEM/VFO CH rotary seems dirty.... i.e. it jumps around in frequency sometimes when I turn it. Would it be safe to start spraying switch cleaner at it? TIA Rob G4UJS

S9 noise on HF with or without antenna 3
Dear Group, I have a bit of a strange question. My FT847 has nothing but S9 of noise on HF (I work mostly satellite these days so only just noticed it). I tried all bands but seem to be blighted with an S9 signal with or without the antenna connected. The other issue is when I tune to a strong AM station in the lower broadcast band 2.2mhz seemed to be the strongest +50db on AM but the audio is dreadful and sounds splattered, clipped and inaudiable. I have been using a passive loop on HF and I’m fearing DC or a strong signal has landed in the front end and done damage. Before I tear my radio apart to resolve this I wondered if anyone had pointers. I know the FT897 used to suffer with S9 all the time due to the 455khz ceramic filters going bad but don’t think the FT847 uses them. Any help would be really appreciated. thanks in advanced, de Spence M0STO see below the test gear on hand to resolve this. test gear: Marconi 2955 radio test set Marconi 2022 Signal Generator Rigol DSA1030A spectrum analyser Phillips 3833 60mhz Scope AF generator VVM logic probe etc. GDO

Kuhne QH40A crystal heater problem 7
I tried the QH40A crystal heater mod as presented all over the internet. However, it did not work out for me ( my FT847 is a 2004 model). I can't quite figure out how it is possible that for some people this mod actually DOES work. The FT847 is using a reference crystal especially cut to be stable at or around room temperature (25C). What you actualy do with the QH40A crystal heater is bringing your crystal to a very stable 40 degrees, a temperature on which the FT847 crystal itself is ...unstable. What you gain (at best) is...nothing. On the contrary, with the QH40A installed, the frequency on my FT847 is continuously increasing at a 1Hz per minute rate (on 144Mhz) for hours on end. Without the mod, at least it more or less stabilize after a while. Crystals to be used in an oven are cut very differently.

FT847 calibrate the V / U frequency 8 #tip
HI all With the FT847 in VHF and UHF I have verified that they are off frequency of + 250Hz. Does anyone know where in the radio I find and how can I correctly calibrate the right frequency? 73

No TX on AM, SSB, on All Bands FM works fine
I wonder if any one can help me, my FT847 stopped transmitting on LSB, USB and AM, FM is fine with Full 100 Watts on HF and 50 Watts on VHF. I traced the audio going in and it gets to Q1043 at TP 1035, there in no audio I removed Q 1063, and the audio is back, Q1063 is is a voltage controlled attenuator, as it has an OP Amp on its input, this could result in a "virtual earth" on pin2 and the signal is getting dropped across the preamp transistor, however there is nothing coming out of Pin 4 which goes off to the Balanced Modulator eventually. There is a good 455 KHz if signal present at the Balanced modulator. The mic audio enters the radio via Transistor Q1043, then trough a cap into Q1063, on TP 1035 three was no audio! Rather odd. No Q1063 is an electronic controlled attenuator controlled by a voltage on pin 3, this voltage come from IC1093 pin 3. Now IC1093 is a strange device it received digital data from Q1105 the main Yaesu 100 pin microcontroller, as you turn the mic gain control up and down it sends a series of data to Q1053, and this turn send a voltage out to control the attenuator. To make matters more interesting the data is only a few bytes sent in less than a milli-second and only when you change the mic gain or select AM SSB, CW, of FM, the data is not continuous. My 2GB/S digital scope did capture the data, without it I would have been snuck! I do not have a decent copy of the FT847 service manual, all the ones on line are photocopied and low resolution and when you blow them up they are unreadable, however, Roger came to my rescue, as he had a genuine FT874 service supplement. Anyway this took 5 days to sus out, as I had no block diagram and no component over lay that I could read, so it took me up to 4 hours to trace each part and make measurement, some components were on the reverse side of the AF main board. To make matter worse, there are some undocumented mods on the back of the board close to the audio input attenuator, This digital transistor shorts out Pin 3 and 5 on IC1063, which increases the attenuator to Max, i.e. no AF signal leave pin 4 to the balanced modulator for SSB and FM. However, there should be a healthy signal on Pin 4 and there is none, as the voltage goes up and down on Pin 3 in sympathy with the Mic gain control, the inhibit is not active. ( I have no idea when the inhibit kicks in) I have enclosed the data sheet for IC 1093, by no means a simple device. Removing IC 1063 restores the audio to TP1035, : ? I have ordered a new attenuator chip, and will solder it when it arrives fingers crossed! ( I am not holding my breath on this one) any pointers in the right direction would be nice? 73 Andrew

CAT - Control - Yet another post 8
Hi, I have been trying to connect my FT-847 to my RigPi. After a few unsuccessful attempts (many), I then tried to use flrig via a USB (CH340), CAT-847, FTBCAT and FTBASICMMO. In some cases, the 'CAT' symbol appeared on the rig, but the radio failed to connect. I've read the posts on the serial number saga and unfortunately my serial number is 4M950027. Anyway, while trying out the programs above, I found something called CommsTester and this allowed me to 'see' the incoming data while tuning the rig. This is what is see: CommTest Version 1.1.8 Received FF00 on COM 5 Received 20FE00 on COM 5 Received 20FA00 on COM 5 Received 20FE00 on COM 5 Received 20FA00 on COM 5 Received 20F600 on COM 5 Received 20F200 on COM 5 Received 20EE00 on COM 5 Received 20EA00 on COM 5 Received 20E600 on COM 5 Received 20E200 on COM 5 I haven't been able to decode the data yet, but would this kind of patch work? See https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~timc/e/ft847/ See: Mon Jun 9 23:09:52 CDT 2014 [CC-USB232 ] Yaesu have just mentioned that they do not support the firmware update at present. Are there any other avenues open for me? Many thanks Ravi
