Re: 4mtr info

Carey W4TFZ

Remember that 4 meters is not legal in the US; where it is a small band available in Europe. The 4 meter band frequencies fall into the same range as some of our original 13 VHF TV channels for over the air broadcasting. Channels 2-4 are 54 MHz to 72MHz and Channels 5-6 are 76MHz to 88 MHz according to frequency allocation chart. I'm pretty sure that any US models would not have that option.?

Re: 4mtr info

Hi Paul.

My FT-847 does not transmit on 70 MHz. It is a 0M serial, which should place it at November 2000.
After looking at a detailed photo that I took this morning with the bottom cover removed, it appears to be un-modded.?

I did a bit of digging on the Internet and it looks like Keith G4FUF is the master of this particular mod. From his writeup (??) it does not look really worth it, at least I am not willing to tackle it. If I weigh the risk versus the reward, I don't think there is enough activity here in the NorthEast to justify modding my radio. Then I would need a whole new set of antennas...

Hi Mickey,

?

Can I ask you , is your ft 847 a C2 model if it is, then 4 meters comes as standard.

Check your serial number, that’s serial numbers after 9E so that means May 99.

Hi Paul.
No worries on my name, many people also choose to spell it with an 'e', but I don't.
I don't look anything like that famous Mouse...

I also have just received my FT-847, my best friend had one that his widow agreed to sell to me after he passed away in July. She had sold it to someone else before I got down there with the money. Anyway, I finally found one, and am currently putting it thru it's paces to see if everything is working OK. I am able to program memories using the FTBasicMMO software just fine now, thanks again for the tip. You will need the software if you choose to program the memories for SAT use, (not REALLY necessary, but it helps a lot!) makes crossband programming a lot easier. I don't have the AZ/EL rotor and antennas necessary yet for satellite use, that is probably the last thing I will work towards this year.

I am not sure about the 4M mod, how would I check to see if it is enabled? Is there a setting in the extended menus for that or does it require pulling the covers off?

FT-847 Optional Filters?

So I pulled the bottom cover off my newly acquired FT-847 to check if it had the optional filters installed. (it did not)
I see the open space for the CW filter, 4 pins on each end.
I also see the Murata SSB (stock) filters installed, 4 pins on one end and 3 pins on the other. They appear to be identical.

My question is this - Are the SSB filters called '7-pole' because they have 7 pins to connect them? Will a Collins 8-pole SSB filter work there?

Also - What is the difference between the Collins filters and the Inrad? Inrad apparently has stopped manufacture and is pretty much out of stock, so a used filter is probably my only option here. Which filters fit/work for SSB? Can I install an 8-pole filter in the 2 spaces (TX & RX)?

Thanks in advance

Micky?

apologies for getting your name wrong on the first over!!
Glad the info will be of good use,please let me know how you get on with the software and programming.
Recently just before Christmas I managed to get an FT-847 and I’m hoping to use it for satellites mainly and perhaps 6 mtrs.
Has your 847 got the 4mtr mod?

What about an app to save the menu contents? Does such a thing exist?

Re: Mem/VFO CH encoder repair, not replacement - works!

I have been doing this repair for a few years, and for any members who use Facebook there are pictures on one of the FT847 groups showing how to do it.

Mem/VFO CH encoder repair, not replacement - works!

Hi All,

Got a 2002 model, still working great. The MEM/VFO CH encoder got flaky a 2-3 years ago, would skip and jump around. Got TWO replacement encoders from Yaesu at that time, put them in a box somewhere. Finally got a moment of time to try this fix.
Top and bottom covers off, knobs off, front panel off, small pile of nuts washers and screws (was easy to put them all back in the right place). Unplug a few cables, pry the sheet metal open, and out popped the front control PCB.

Did NOT try to "clean" the LCD or plastic screen, they were good enough. Did blow out a bit of dust and lint from the chassis.

Un-soldered the encoder, but did NOT put in a new one. Pried up 4 small metal tabs on the old encoder, and pulled it all apart. Q-tips, alcohol and contact cleaner got off some old lubricant that was mostly just a bit sticky. A new tiny dab of Ox-gard on the contact fingers and contact wheel. Bent the tiny tabs back down and soldered the encoder it back in to the PCB.
Put the whole mess back together. Did NOT break a single thing, or have any left over parts!
MEM/VFO CH encoder now works just like new. Doubled up the power switch contacts with a few tiny bits of wire while I was in there.

I bet I could do this 2-4 times before the encoder tabs broke, or a solder pad lifted from the board. Good enough for a 18 year old radio. If I had bothered to use the new encoder, I would save the old one for for repair and replacement the NEXT time.

The new encoder I got from Yeasu has the tactile detents. There was a small spring plate on the encoder that could be removed if you wanted to use the encoder for the free spinning SUB-TUNE position.

Resources:
- talks about the power switch, but good info on dis-assembly.
- some good pictures of the chassis insides.

HI

?

My previous radio was the 847 early production run and yes Yaesu did offer to do the fix free of charge.? I live in Canada and only had to send the rig to my local shop.? After the mod, all was well.?? I really liked that radio and still have it.

Good luck and 73

Regarding the CAT problem:
Generally, prior to the 8G05 production run, there was one main problem in the design of the radio: it only had unidirectional CAT control for frequency and mode (i.e., you could only use the PC to command the rig but not to report the rig frequency and mode back to the software on the PC). Beginning with production run 8G05, the radios have bidirectional CAT for frequency and mode (PC commanding the rig, and the rig reporting information to the PC). In the USA (at least), Yaesu offered to upgrade all radios older than 8G05xxxx under warranty, which involved replacing a computer chip in the radio and some other modifications. Many people with earlier rigs took Yaesu up on their offer.
Some service centers may still have the new CPU in stock. If? you have a rig with the faulty CPU and can't find a CPU nearby get in touch with Geroff at Castle electronics ,?

Re: FT-847 Serial Numbers?

Hi folks, this is the chartI use.
847 SERIAL NUMBER DE-CODE FOR DATE
First number - YEAR CODE
1 = 1991, 2001, 2011
Month code
C = JAN
D = FEB
E = MAR
F = APR
G = MAY
H = JUN
I = JUL
J = AUG
K = SEP
L = OCT
M = NOV
N = DEC
Batch code next 2 numbers
08 = Batch 8
Serial number next in batch
0069
My set made - 2001 or 1991, November, Batch 8, Serial 0069 in batch

Re: FT-847 Serial Numbers?

Hi all,?

Quick search I found this:?

"...Yaesu appears to use the following format for serial numbers on their
amateur products:
?
Year of manufacture-Month of manufacture-Production Run-Individual Unit
number, where the month of manufacture is offset by 2, so "C" means January,
"D" means February, "E" means March, and so forth.
?
Example: 8G051234 = 1998, May (fifth month, or "G"), Production Run 05, unit
#1234 in this run.
?
One key serial number range is 8G05. This seems to be the point at which
Yaesu had corrected the bi-directional CAT issue and made some other
improvements. This version was made in May 1998. Later serial numbers (e.g.,
8L09nnnn) all seem to have incorporated the earlier improvements plus new
ones...."

Hope it helps
