FT-818ND, Should I Buy One?

Hello, new to the group.? Thank you for letting me join.

My son (NG7W) and I have gotten interested in POTA and am considering the purchase of the FT-818ND.? However, I notice that the optional filters (both SSB and CW) especially the CW filter, have become unobtainum.? So I hesitate to purchase the radio knowing I may never be able to equip it with the CW filter.? I have searched and searched for a CW filter to no avail.? And have yet to find a used FT-818ND, at any price, with the CW filter installed.

So also looking at the Icom IC-705 and Elecraft KX2 but very pricey.? And the Xiegu X6100 is interesting but it looks like it's still a work in progress, getting a lot of bugs out, just having come into production.

For those who are CW ops and have the radio without the CW filter, is the lack of a CW filter a real problem for CW POTA work? ?Buy the FT-818ND or not?? Buy something else?? All comments welcome.

Thank you, Richard AG5M

Re: FT-818ND, Should I Buy One?

Keep looking. I found a used FT-817 with cw filter for $370 at a local hamfest. They are available if you look. Mine came with a serial cat cable, a usb cat cable and an auto tuner interface cable.?

Re: FT-818ND, Should I Buy One?

IMHO....I would buy the F-891 and run low power or 100w or anything in between...I have had very bad luck with Xeigu so I would not purchase one...the ft817/818 can be purchased used in expensively but again you may want morew that 5-6- watts.?

Bluetooth Yaesu Cat Interface

Hey Gang, if you're interested I got some YC1-BT (Yaesu Cat Bluetooth interface)

They are very small, self-powered Yaesu Cat interfaces for the FT-8X7 Series (817, 857, 897)

Drop Me an email at?ve2dx at hotmail dot com?if interested or drop by?

818 in the field

We have so many differing ideas for portable rigs, I want to throw mine into the mix for reviews and ideas for improvement.

My main expedition radio bag is a Karrimor lightweight ECM bergen, designed for the British Army when in Afghanistan for the mobile Electronic Counter Measures kit. Was lucky to get it new and never issued. Sadly as it is designed for the payload to be active it is heavily ventilated with mesh panels, this suits me as I am a wet weather lightweight now. I am a fair-weather walker but I do have a dry-liner if needed.

The bag...

818 in a 12mm ply "cabinet" with z-817. The mic is in the gap on the right

The inbuilt strapping works perfect...

LiFePo4 6Ah battery in here...

The obligatory Anderson power-poles hihi

Plenty space for antennas, accessories and of course, FOOD!

It is work in progress but so far so good. Current HF antenna is a Moonraker stainless steel 5.25-metre telescopic whip with a ground-spike mount. I am all for keep it simple!

73 everyone who made it this far,

Re: FT-818ND, Should I Buy One?

Never underestimate the power of QRP. I work 100w from home and 6w from the 818 and when in the right spot the results are seriously comparable. Power can make up for bad location but a good location can make up for lack of power.

Take care and 73,

Bluetooth CI-V interfaces and 705SMeter available!

I am Richard VE2DX of??I build many Ham Radio products and I now have stock of the new?low cost YC1-BT CT62 Bluetooth interface!? They are great for the FT-100, Ft-817, FT-857 and FT-897 since they offer a way to add CTA ports via Bluetooth.? You can see photos and get more info about these and other Ham Radio products on my website.? I have stock carry preloaded F4WHN 705SMeter and am finishing on a new YAESE version the CT62B-METER that will offer the same functions as the 705SMeter but with the added function of linking the VE2DX CT62B-Meter to your computer, replacing the CT62 or the YC1-BT... These are not only available on my website, but also at?)?for UK,? and also??for Scandinavian countries!
?
We WILL ship anywhere on earth!

Can the Bluetooth relay band information and tx/rx states?

Re: Bluetooth CI-V interfaces and 705SMeter available!

Edited

the answer is simple YES, the ICOM CI-V does carry such information thus if it does (and it does!) then my Bluetooth devices will, they are simply carriers.

This is not controlled by the CT17Bs but instead, by the application and radio and the IC-705 and most other ICOM radios since (and before I think!) the IC-7000 do.

fot the FT-8X7, I think so let me check the commands, but if you were able to do it using a CT62 from Yaesu then it will work 100% again, the YC1-BT simply carries the info, doesn't block anything.

Hello,

Thank you for the welcome.

Re: Hello

I'm building a Mitsubishi RA amps for vhf and UHF ... and a dual mosfet for HF ..?

All controlled by a Arduino nano ... well actually 2 arduino Nanos... one for v/uhf and the other for the hf with lowpass filter ...?

80w on v/uhf and ~100w on hf ... the hf amp was part kit on ebay ... I can't remember the part number off hand ( I'm at work -- nites ) MiniPA100w come to mind . -- and if you know it, yes , one of the kits arrived with a fake dual mosfet.?

You can find my --- kinda progress -- on YouTube.?

I have a 817nd and a 818nd ...?
