You can use the optional camera mic on the head unit. ?Can’t use the camera but you will have an attached mic to the head for mobile applications

Subject: [Yaesu-FTM-6000R] USB port question)s) #interface

Just bought a NIB 6000 at a recent hamfest, trying to get it set up before putting it in the mobile. Having perused the owners manual and researched online, I see virtually no information on the two USB ports. I connected the port on the main chassis to a win10 laptop, but it isn't recognized. I tried loading Prolific drivers from the Yaesu website for earlier models, still not recognized. I don't have the connector or an RS232 port to connect to he data port (yet). Should have a workable cable and port here later this week.
My question is, what are these two ports for? Strictly updates?
Maybe I missed something in the manual, but I didn't even see them mentioned, though the one on the chassis is marked DATA with a small switch under it marked NORMAL and UPDATE. The one on the control head is marked DATA but no switch. Are these for updating firmware only, or is the ADMS software supposed to communicate with them?
TIA -

Re: Anyone have a workaround for not having "BANKS"?

Yes, I got used to the “BANKS” feature from my FT70D and love it.? Really weird they didn’t leave it in the FTM6000.? Steve I use banks the same reason you do.

Re: Anyone have a workaround for not having "BANKS"?

Unfortunately the answer to your question is that there is NO work around. ?Yaesu’s?automatic Band Group mode is completely worthless. That is because almost everything you have programmed outside the ham bands will be in the VHF Group (rail, marine, public service) that you may wish to scan occasionally. ?Also, scanning by group limits you to just VHF OR UHF. ?It is not in any way a substitute for Memory Banks for several reasons. ?I am not sure how you use banks but I often set them up for a specific location or activity (Ex: Boat bank includes marine frequencies, ham repeaters along the Ohio River, weather & navigation, ?Other places I may visit or specific driving routes, etc). ?In almost all cases I wish to scan both UHF & VHF frequencies at the same time, not just one or the other. ?

So, does anyone have any idea why Yaesu does not include memory bank support on their recent radios? ?I do not think cost would be a factor, since it should be easily implemented in either software or hardware. ?If the objective is to keep the interface simple to understand, than it is a function that you can easily ignore if you don’t use it. ?

I have several Yaesu radios, but have not bought several because they have not included memory banks. ?I have bought 2 of these FT-6000 in spit of this flaw in the design, since it seems to otherwise be a good solid radio for the price I paid. ?I still have many Rail, Aircraft, Public Service frequencies in memory I can select, but have set to skip when scanning.

Anyone have a workaround for not having "BANKS"?

Jerry Suhrstedt - W7WAX

I'm sure this topic has been covered.? I'm used to my FT70D which has banks so that I can scan specific banks of memory channels rather than my entire memory list.? Does the FTM6000 have a workaround for this?

Does Groups work for this??? Trying hard to understand the whole groups concept.

Any help appreciated.

Re: price increase

Bought one back in May 2022 for $319 + 9% tax = $347.00. Also the RT Software with cable. Bummer that the price dropped as this is an excellent basic rig if you do not want all the fancy stuff like GPS, APRS, Color touch screen. I prefer the basic, stay on a single channel while in use. After reading the Gigaparts price, I logged into my HRO account and it is available for $259 (includes $40 coupon). Could not help myself and ordered 2nd one at $286.000 including tax. Will receive later in the week. When a good model comes out, I always buy 2 in case they discontinue or especially with lack of parts availability. Yaesu had to pull 2 models recently due to no parts. Glad that I read this post. KF6OJE

Squelch issues

I noticed today with a station at about S3-S5 and the squelch at its maximum value that a station keep breaking up the squelch. In other words, I was not able to mute the station. The station had lots of noise so its signal was quite low.

Anyone noticed this issue?

Thanks!

Re: price increase

$260 at Gigaparts now until 01-31-2023 which is a decent price. Great radio but I am not sure I would pay $300 for it.

Reviews, opinions. How do you like your FTM-6000 so far? #review

I also got one at the $200 price from Giga Parts. ?At that price I could not pass it up. ?I was looking for a mobile, and at $200, it was in the same price range as the Chinese radios I considered. ?I had wondered how many other people grabbed one at that price. ?So far I am mostly satisfied with it but found a few things that could have been better.

First the good. ?Audio is better than any of the other radios I have here including the FT-897D that is normally connected to the VHF-UHF antenna at home. ?It is loud and clear, and rarely needs to go beyond half scale. ?It receives well on HAM bands as well as aircraft (AM), marine, railroad (FMN), and some public service frequencies while still connected to my Diamond x-50 antenna. ?Easy to program manually once you figure out their manuals (setting PL tones is in the Advanced Manual, and not even mentioned in the basic manual. ?Display is easy to see, and easy to shift between freq. and call sign display. ?I think I will like the operating interface for use in the car. ?I also like the fact that it does not display channel while scanning, eliminates distraction. ?Signal and audio reports are both good via local repeaters.

Biggest negative is that it does NOT support memory banks, and their automatic Band Group mode is completely worthless. That is because almost everything you have programmed outside the ham bands will be in the VHF Group (rail, marine, public service) that you may wish to scan occasionally. ?Also, scanning by group limits you to just VHF OR UHF. ?Does anyone have any idea why Yaesu does not include memory bank support on their recent radios?

?A more minor thing is memory skip. ?If I skip a memory there is no indication it is skipped (my HTs have a symbol next to the memory number if skipped), it takes several button pushes to go in to and check if a frequency is skipped. ?PMS scan has som quirks too.

I did not get the Blue Tooth module since BT on my FT-3D was really bad. ?If any one has tried it I would love to hear how it worked (audio quality, noise, what will it connect to). ?

p.s. - Price is back up tp $260 at Giga Parts now.

Re: Not Transmitting

Just a couple of things to check.
(1) Power Supply - per manual 13.8 VDC @ 15 A is required. ?If insufficient current available transmit will fail. ?You can try setting it down to 5W power level.
(2) If power ok, is TX shown on display and led on mic when you key up? - check mic cannection
(3j Is the frequency you have set with in transmit freq. for the radio? 2m or 70cm band Entered correctly?

(4) Defective coax connection between radio & antenna.

Good luck,

N8AAX STEVE?

Not Transmitting

I just go the radio a week ago.? Got the cable and software and loaded and programed.? The radio will not transmit.? No matter what station I am on I can not transmit.? No response.? I have an older radio and a hand held and both receive and transmit on my antenna so there is plenty of signal.? Any ideas or have you heard of anything clashing in the program phase that would stop voice transmission?? Thank

I use mine as a dual band base station. ?I really like it. I have used it to transmit APRS using direwolf and Pinpoint software.. ?Enjoy

Re: FTM-6000R

It's a nice basic radio.? So far i love it.? Only thing is I don't seem able to program it yet.? Ever since my stroke my brain's a bit scrambled.

RT Systems

I got my FTM 6K a couple weeks ago from Giga-parts for $200 plus tx.? The RT Systems I got with it is fantastic.? All I had to do was let the program pick all the frequencies and then just put them in my radio.?
