FT980 dose not recieve

Hi, Huys,

My FT980 lost the reception and the left meter give a position on the middle of the? scale, the ritgh dose not mesure any.

Any noise on the speaker.

Any hint? Tnx--CP6CL

N4PL will be home from Poland and can probably answer your question the first week of October? Ask again if you sill need help.

Does the rig still transmit normally?

No, it looks like it is transmiting.... no Rx, and left meter shows a "corrient"... (measument)

Carlos,

There is a VCV circuit with a small vaariable capacitor.? Sounds like it is out of range which is common on the FT-980.? Use a non metalic tool to adjust.? You should get the same tone on LSB as USB once in range.? I hope you have the Yaesu Tech supplement manual which is the Yaesu Tech? Manual for the for the FT-980.? The capacitor can be reached by removing the top cabinet cover.? Good luck.?

I had to eventually replace this capacitor, as the original drifted completely out of range. It is very common. The capacitor is TC4001 ... it is located under a "can" with a hole to adjust.

You can see if it is operating by putting a voltmeter on TP4004 (right near the cap): it should read between 3V to 6V depending on USB/LSB setting, and IF-Shift position.

The adjustment procedure is called "BFO VCV", and you can find it on page 23 of the Technical Supplement in the files section.

The BFO VCV problem was described in the FOX TANGO newsletter in about 1984.? Thanks to N8TW for pointing this out.? I replaced the trimmer in my first FT-980 I bought in 1983.? That GT-980 is running strong at N4PL. Thanks to N8TW to pointing to the .Yaesu Tech Supplement page covering this...

Being out of range means the FT-980 does not receive.? The first notice of a problem is that the tone is not the same on LSB as on USB.? Thank goodness it is an easy fix,

Very thanks, Mat and Dave for explanations. I have now the Tech Supplement and read the procedure about BFO VCV in pag 23. But now I have another question:

"I understand it could be a problem of shift of frequency in BFO due of out of value of the trimmer. BUT, why the left meter on the radio indicates a value, like it could be a final power state current?

Best regards, CP6CL

Hi, friends,

I have done the procedure on 23th page on Tech Suplement. At the begining the voltage was on 8 v. I moved the trimmer slowly up to 6 v with USB and Shift fully counterclockwise. Then switched to USB and Shitf to clockwise and the voltage did not change.

What to do then?

The BFO VCV is a very common issue, but not the only potential one. It will drift over time, and eventually reach a point where the VCV doesn't work at all and you get nothing on CW/SSB.? Switching LSB-USB without any change in the VCV frequency is interesting. I am wondering if you have an HMI.

Q: Can you receive or hear anything on AM or FM modes? If yes, the BFO is likely at least operational and we should look elsewhere.

Q: When was the last time you replaced the RAM backup batteries (behind the panel under the rig)? Have you done a RAM reset (pull out the batteries for at 2 minutes, replace with fresh batteries)? A lot of issues can be traced to this ...

?I am wondering if you have an HMI.

I DONT HAVE IT

Q: Can you receive or hear anything on AM or FM modes??

ANY AT ANY BAND AND MODE.

Q: When was the last time you replaced the RAM backup batteries (behind the panel under the rig)? Have you done a RAM reset (pull out the batteries for at 2 minutes, replace with fresh batteries)? A lot of issues can be traced to this ...

I THINK IS IS OK, IT KEEPS THE FREQ AND MODE FROM DE LAS TIME IT WAS TURNED ON.

?Have you done a RAM reset (pull out the batteries for at 2 minutes, replace with fresh batteries)?

I WILL DO IT

THANKS

If you can't hear anything on any mode, it is probably not the BFO VCV. When mine was bad I was still able to do AM, FM, & RTTY.

We'll wait back to hear about the RAM reset ...

Mat,

I removed? the batteries from packed and waited 5 minuts. Then replaced them on pakect and radio did not change.

Even check all signal from input and output in pll and vco on PLL board. All are ok. I am thinking in problem on RF or IF board.

Thanks a lot. CP6CL

Hi, Mat and everybody,

I have measured something on radio. Here what I found:

In IF UNIT:

In J01 connector--? There are the following signals:? AMW, AMN, CWW, CWN and SSB. Anyone should be on 13,5 V when each mode is selected by the Mode Selector. Well, All are in zero volt. They do not change when the Mode Selector is moved.

In J08 connector-- There are the following signals: -9V, Rx 9V, 13,5 V, 9 V and Tx 9V. All is ok. Tx 9 v is actived in Tx mode.

AF UNIT:

In J10 connector-- There are the following signals: Tx 13,5V, 13,5 V, SSB 9V and 9 V. All is ok, except SSB 9V, when I move Mode Selector to USB and LSB. It is on zero always. The rest is ok.

In J12 connector-- There are the following signals: CW 9V, FSK 5V and FSK 9V/CW 9V. All is zero always, even moving the Mode? Selector to CW and FSK modes.

Even measure the contacts on Mode Selector. It is ok.

Best regards. CP6CL
