CAT Interface

Hi, guys,

I am interesting in build an CAT Interface to my FT980.

Have you any circuit details?? Tnx Jose? (CP6CL)

Hi Jose, It seems like a lot of work to save less than $40. Search FIF-232 on eBay.

I uploaded the FIF-232C schematic to the Files section.

Very thanks Roger... have a nice day. Jose

I used the FIF-232 years ago to get on PSK31.? Look at EBAY as there are sellers who are selling interface cables for the FT-980.? My FT-980's (I still have 2)
but I have an SDR transceiver that does not even need an interface for digital.? Good luck with your interface for the FT-980.

But what is the differences between FIF-232 and mine? All these interfaces works with transistors in two regimens: cut and saturation, because the logic binary works with them.

I use optos to separate the grounds and the transitors inside work in cut and saturations too.

Look my interface:

Thanks for reply.?

Hi Jose,

I can’t see how your circuit can work. Looking at the RS-232 side pin 2 (RWD). Where is the RS-232 side – 12 VDC source for logic One? Where is the RS-232 side + 12 VDC source for logic Zero?

?

Look at the FIF-232 diagram. The power supply outputs +12 VDC and – 12 VDC. The actual RS-232 specification lists voltages between -5 and -15 for the negative and +5 and +15 for the positive.

Roger,

Glad to meet the co-owner of the FT-980 list at .io.? I bought my first FT-980 in 1983.? At 76 I have some difficulties working on my rigs.

I have two FT-980's now and copied the pages from the old Fox Tango newsletter with tips and fixes.? I sent out 10 copies.? I am about 35 miles East of Carol the owner of the Fox Tango web page.

Hi Dave,
Like you I have two FT-980's. I had forgotten about the FT newsletter also covering the FT-980. I opened up my CDROM FT Newsletter and started looking at it again. It brings back fond memories of waiting for the FT newsletter and the Yellow Sheets every month. You can read about what I was doing back then on page 8327. For some reason page 8313 is missing from my pdf copy.

Are your FT-980 pages in pdf format? If so please upload them to the Files section as we can use all the tips we can get.

Yes, I have already read on this topic. An interface for RS232 binary with +12 and -12 V is missing. I am thinking of incorporating the MAX232 that internally has the generation of the negative source from the positive one.

?Thanks for these arguments.

I recently bought on eBay a USB interface cable that claims to be compatible with FT-980 (among other radios that use the same CAT connector style).. Connected it to the latest version of HRD running on Windows 10, on a modern computer.? The virtual port is created correctly, HRD configured to work with it but there is no communication with the radio.

BTW, HRD claims to support FT-980.? It appears in their pull? down list.

Do you guys have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?? There are two variables here:? the HRD and the cable.? I think I can rule out the radio as I tried three different ones.? The computer should not be a suspect as I tried two different laptops (both i7).

Are there any programs that would run on WIn10 that I could use for diagnostics?

Thank you and 73,
Wald N4PL

Wald,

Any luck on the CAT interface for the FT-980.? Sounds like you may need an interface before you can hit the PC.

Hi Dave,

I talked to HRD support and they caught one setup detail I have overlooked: the USB interface I bought on eBay contained the Prolific chip, which has a long history of protocol non-compliance and driver problems.? So I bought another USB to serial adapter that has the FTDI chip in it (apparently authentic) and built my own cable.? But having a genuine chip and proper USB driver did not cure the problem.? The radio is still not talking.? I am investigating.? I have a service call with HRD on Monday and they will run the diagnostics remotely on my PC.? I will send a summary once the progress is made.
