Re: yaesu ft-980can not get radio to transmit

Is the radio connected to a dummy load or suitable HF antenna? Power it on, chose a ham band and post some photos of the front panel so we can see the frequency and positions of all the knobs etc

Re: Anyone seen fans like mine?

Paul. There was a mod doing the rounds which involved adding an extra fan on the back plane. The reason was that there are two heat producing modules, the PA unit and the power supply side by side. It was well known that the main heat sink across the back and the single fan cooling the PA unit still resulted in overheating. My one has been converted with a separate bolt on panel with the extra fan colling the power eupply module.

Why not download the manual and learn what controls are available?? and then what the theory of operation is?.

There is so much of this buying broken rigs and then getting on line to see if someone can tell you what to repair.

In it's day the FT-980 was Yaesu's top of the line radio.? This hobby will become much more rewarding for you if you can develop basic troubleshooting skills and solve a lot of these problems on your own.

For us old farts.....there were no computers or internet, just snail mail or the telephone.? ???

jean have you ever repaired this radio for no transmit? i am thinking that maybe something is bad in the power supply of the radio and i wanted to know if i can use an external power supply for a ft-107m and see if i can get the ft-980 to transmit? marc

The MOX button acts as microphone PTT, it can lock the FT-980 in transmit mode until depressed.
Very usful to send? a tune by selecting FSK mode.

Is it set to a ham frequency?

Re: Hi FT-980 Owners

is there an alternative power supply that can be connected to the ft-980? can a seperate power supply from an ft-107m work with this radio? thanks marc

Before you attempt to use external supplies you should measure the voltages of the internal supplies.

HI? !
The FT-980 has no external supply connector. But inside thre is a kind of Molex connector, it make the junction between power supply unit to the rest of FT-980.
Remain that there a two separate voltage to provide :
13.5V for low stage and PA driver
24 to 26 V for 100 W PA only.

Will it go into transmit if you press the mox button? ?Will it go into transmit when you hit the Morse key?

Re: 11meters Modification

Hi Jones,

This 11 m modification is not a change in EPROM.
It 's hardware modification to apply the GEN VFO on this 11m band.
I described this on a document? to get the GEN VFO as a general coverage in Tx too.

Hello all?
My FT980 has a modification fitted for tx on 11m bands I am wondering? how common this is?
has anyone else got this eprom mod ? I have a switch fitted on the back of the radio to switch the mod on and off ,
the radio acts as normal with it off, but will tx rx in Gen on 11m from 12m through to 10m, withit on.?

Cheers Mal G0MIX?
