Files

A note about Files Ownership:
Whoever uploads folders or files becomes the owner of those items even though he/she may have never actually had anything to do with their creation and original posting. For the Original owner to regain control over the items here is my suggestion -
1 - Create a new folder with the same name but add an asterisk (*) at the end of the folder or files name. For example an existing 6146 folder would have a 6146* folder next to it (if sorting is by Name).
2 - Copy the 6146 folder files back onto your computer.
3 - Load the 6146* folder with the files. Change the comments section as required.
4 - Ask the existing folder owner, group owner or a moderator to delete the original 6146 folder.
5 - After the 6146 folder has been deleted you can delete the * at the end of the name.

FT-980 SHIFT pot

Gyus,

I am seeking your advice on the WIDTH/SHIFT pot... perhaps a well known problem but I am new to these radios.? I am in custody of two FT-980s that a local Ham donated to me recently.? Both had the SHIFT shaft cracked (the part past the Y split). I reinforced one shaft, electrically restored the radio and finally put in on the air, only to realize that the SHIFT broke off completely.? Sad story, and this otherwise fine radio is now defaced.? I would like to restore it. Having a replacement part would be ideal but it could be my Christmas wish, right?? HI.? So I am thinking about a repair.? Is there a way to disassemble the pot and replace the shaft only?? The shaft looks like a relatively common JA part from the 80-ties and perhaps could be had from other radios.

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Hi Wald,
I have never heard of your problem before. I did a search of the old messages and found nothing. Looking at the location of the shift/width controls and the fact that you have two FT-980's damaged the same I would say that they had both been picked up incorrectly. Instead of both hands at the sides there was one hand at the right front (under the shift/width controls) and another hand on the rear left. Hopefully one of the FT-980's is working OK.
The width control is a pot while the shift control is a 31 position encoder. I have uploaded the technical manual. Take a look at pages 137, 173 and 174 (not Yaesu page numbers but your pdf? reader page numbers).
It looks like the assembly is specific to the 980. Possibly someone is parting out one. I would try eBay and HiFiSSB in the UK. It's also possible that Yaesu parts has one somewhere.

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Hi Roger,

Thank you for all the research you have done for me.? It is a big help.? I downloaded the manual so I am all set to search for the part.? I agree with you that the rigs must have been mishandled, in the same unfortunate way.?

I checked eBay and HiFiSSB sites.? No such parts.? HiFiSSB does not have this rig model on their list.? So the hope is that someone, perhaps on this list (yes, right now it is fairly thin but may grow over time) is parting a radio.? If you hear of someone doing so please let me know.

In the meantime I shall search similar-sounding models like the '990.? Maybe there is some part commonality.? I will also contact Yaesu parts and see what they say.

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Wald (and all),

Look at the Kenwood TS-930/TS-940 'Slope Tune' control as a potential donor source for those parts.

I see '980 pots and entire front panel assemblies come up for sale from time to time on eBay. I own four of the rigs and thus have needed a source of spares to keep mine going.

CAT Interface

Hi, guys,

I am interesting in build an CAT Interface to my FT980.

Have you any circuit details?? Tnx Jose? (CP6CL)

Re: CAT Interface

Hi Jose, It seems like a lot of work to save less than $40. Search FIF-232 on eBay.

GEN mode probelm

Hi, friends,

I have noted in my FT980, in GEN mode, at any frenquency when I active TX in USB the current in the final state (METER I), rise uo to 10 A, even without audio in microphone and DRIVE and MONI en minimun. In LSB the current is zero, normal.

Any hint to this anomaly?

Re: CAT Interface

I used the FIF-232 years ago to get on PSK31.? Look at EBAY as there are sellers who are selling interface cables for the FT-980.? My FT-980's (I still have 2)
but I have an SDR transceiver that does not even need an interface for digital.? Good luck with your interface for the FT-980.

Re: CAT Interface

But what is the differences between FIF-232 and mine? All these interfaces works with transistors in two regimens: cut and saturation, because the logic binary works with them.

I use optos to separate the grounds and the transitors inside work in cut and saturations too.

Look my interface:

Thanks for reply.?

Hi Jose,

I can’t see how your circuit can work. Looking at the RS-232 side pin 2 (RWD). Where is the RS-232 side – 12 VDC source for logic One? Where is the RS-232 side + 12 VDC source for logic Zero?

?

Look at the FIF-232 diagram. The power supply outputs +12 VDC and – 12 VDC. The actual RS-232 specification lists voltages between -5 and -15 for the negative and +5 and +15 for the positive.

Roger,

Glad to meet the co-owner of the FT-980 list at .io.? I bought my first FT-980 in 1983.? At 76 I have some difficulties working on my rigs.

I have two FT-980's now and copied the pages from the old Fox Tango newsletter with tips and fixes.? I sent out 10 copies.? I am about 35 miles East of Carol the owner of the Fox Tango web page.

Re: CAT Interface

Hi Dave,
Like you I have two FT-980's. I had forgotten about the FT newsletter also covering the FT-980. I opened up my CDROM FT Newsletter and started looking at it again. It brings back fond memories of waiting for the FT newsletter and the Yellow Sheets every month. You can read about what I was doing back then on page 8327. For some reason page 8313 is missing from my pdf copy.

Are your FT-980 pages in pdf format? If so please upload them to the Files section as we can use all the tips we can get.

Re: CAT Interface

Yes, I have already read on this topic. An interface for RS232 binary with +12 and -12 V is missing. I am thinking of incorporating the MAX232 that internally has the generation of the negative source from the positive one.

?Thanks for these arguments.

Re: GEN mode probelm

Hello Jose,

I checked this scenario on my FT-980 and it is not doing that.? I tried to key up on 14.005 and 14.5 MHz. No Ic current in any mode, on any freq.

Have you had this radio since new?? If not, then you could have a CB mod for GEN TX.? They did that to get on 11m USB back in the days.

Re: GEN mode probelm

Hi Jose,
A good idea by Wald to check for GEN TX mods. There is a Gen folder in the Files section with some RF board pictures and info.

I was looking for items to add to the Files section and found an item about FT-980 batteries. Take a look at "FT-980 Batteries".
I would try starting the FT-980 with no batteries to see if the default program clears the problem. Then put fresh batteries in.
