CAT Interface

Hi, guys,

I am interesting in build an CAT Interface to my FT980.

Have you any circuit details?? Tnx Jose? (CP6CL)

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Wald (and all),

Look at the Kenwood TS-930/TS-940 'Slope Tune' control as a potential donor source for those parts.

I see '980 pots and entire front panel assemblies come up for sale from time to time on eBay. I own four of the rigs and thus have needed a source of spares to keep mine going.

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Hi Roger,

Thank you for all the research you have done for me.? It is a big help.? I downloaded the manual so I am all set to search for the part.? I agree with you that the rigs must have been mishandled, in the same unfortunate way.?

I checked eBay and HiFiSSB sites.? No such parts.? HiFiSSB does not have this rig model on their list.? So the hope is that someone, perhaps on this list (yes, right now it is fairly thin but may grow over time) is parting a radio.? If you hear of someone doing so please let me know.

In the meantime I shall search similar-sounding models like the '990.? Maybe there is some part commonality.? I will also contact Yaesu parts and see what they say.

Re: FT-980 SHIFT pot

Hi Wald,
I have never heard of your problem before. I did a search of the old messages and found nothing. Looking at the location of the shift/width controls and the fact that you have two FT-980's damaged the same I would say that they had both been picked up incorrectly. Instead of both hands at the sides there was one hand at the right front (under the shift/width controls) and another hand on the rear left. Hopefully one of the FT-980's is working OK.
The width control is a pot while the shift control is a 31 position encoder. I have uploaded the technical manual. Take a look at pages 137, 173 and 174 (not Yaesu page numbers but your pdf? reader page numbers).
It looks like the assembly is specific to the 980. Possibly someone is parting out one. I would try eBay and HiFiSSB in the UK. It's also possible that Yaesu parts has one somewhere.

FT-980 SHIFT pot

Gyus,

I am seeking your advice on the WIDTH/SHIFT pot... perhaps a well known problem but I am new to these radios.? I am in custody of two FT-980s that a local Ham donated to me recently.? Both had the SHIFT shaft cracked (the part past the Y split). I reinforced one shaft, electrically restored the radio and finally put in on the air, only to realize that the SHIFT broke off completely.? Sad story, and this otherwise fine radio is now defaced.? I would like to restore it. Having a replacement part would be ideal but it could be my Christmas wish, right?? HI.? So I am thinking about a repair.? Is there a way to disassemble the pot and replace the shaft only?? The shaft looks like a relatively common JA part from the 80-ties and perhaps could be had from other radios.

Files

A note about Files Ownership:
Whoever uploads folders or files becomes the owner of those items even though he/she may have never actually had anything to do with their creation and original posting. For the Original owner to regain control over the items here is my suggestion -
1 - Create a new folder with the same name but add an asterisk (*) at the end of the folder or files name. For example an existing 6146 folder would have a 6146* folder next to it (if sorting is by Name).
2 - Copy the 6146 folder files back onto your computer.
3 - Load the 6146* folder with the files. Change the comments section as required.
4 - Ask the existing folder owner, group owner or a moderator to delete the original 6146 folder.
5 - After the 6146 folder has been deleted you can delete the * at the end of the name.
