unable to change frequencies

A friend of mine who is out in Spain paragliding is unable to change the frequency on his FT60 he says the buttons and the knob have no affect, after I gave him a few tips I then told him to do a full factory reset which he says he did the frequency changed to the default but he still can't operate the keys or the knob to change frequencies, any ideas?

His radio is probably locked. Ask him if there is an icon of a lock on the screen. ?He can press and hold the 6 key to unlock. What is locked can be changed in the menu settings. ?He should look in his manual.

Could he have the keypad lock on?

If the "6" keys is pressed and held, that locks the controls on the radio. To unlock the controls, just hold "6" key down again.

Has he tried holding the #6 key which locks & unlocks the keypad &/or channel selector knob depending on how the lock menu item is set up.

It is most likely 'locked'.
Press and hold the '6' key will /lock/unlock

? Sounds like the keyboard lock is on.? Press and hold the 6 key for 1 to 2 seconds to unlock.

He said his friend had done a factory reset on the radio which would
clear the keypad/dial lock. In fact, can a reset even be done if the
keypad is locked? I don't know.

He sent me a picture of the radio definitely not locked and on the default frequency from a reset. I did a reset on mine to compare and it matches except I have full control.?

To all who suggested the keypad may be locked:

The original poster said his friend HAD DONE "A FULL FACTORY RESET." The
radio WILL NOT be locked after a full reset.

I experienced similar this AM on my FT-60 and noted that my speaker/mic was not “completely” plugged into the HT.

?

Being partially inserted, but not completed apparently locked the keypad and knobs down from being able to do anything.

?

I pushed the plug in and all is OK.

?

Maybe similar to your friend’s situation if using a speaker/mic or a earbud, etc., etc..

He replied to the lock/un-lock via key #6 a number of posts prior.? No indication in the display it being locked and he had already tried that as an option.? Just peruse the posts and you should find the trouble-shooting he had done.

Hey godly_mistle

"A friend of mine who is out in Spain paragliding"

Has your friend landed? I do not advise repairing a radio in flight ?

It sounds to me that maybe the keypad has gone bad? Do any of the keys function??

Can he use some instrument like a pencil to make sure the keys are being pressed and that they are making contact to the internal assembly?

What was he/she doing before/after this happened? It states that a factory reset did not clear the issue, but how about removing the battery and any power source for a while and see if any short clears it self.

I don't know what is really happening its a bizarre behavior to say the least, but maybe some capacitor is overloaded and malfunctioning?!

Ask and come back to us with theses answers. Oh and is this altitude related or is it happening on the ground to?

Hello godly_mistle

Has your friend reported any progress on this issue We "I" are sitting on pins and needles to see what the culprit was.

Please don't keep us hanging. And I hope your friend enjoyed the trip to Spain, here in San Francisco, we have a huge community of paraglider, because we are open to winds from the ocean.

73, and please report back any news, positive or negative. We are all hear to learn, and this one stumped most of us so it is a good example to learn from.
