FT60 battery question

It's a loooong story but my FT60 has rarely been used for the past 8-10 years.? We are moving and I anticipate a good bit of operation with it after our move.
?
I have three Yaesu FNB-83 batteries purchased when I bought the FT60 as well as the CD-45 (or is it CD-47 ?) charger -- 7.2 vdc, 1400 mAh.
?
I leave the batteries on the charger until the pilot light glows green showing full charge. ?When the FT-60 is first turned on, the display shows supply voltage. Two of the batteries show 5.4 to 6.0 volts, while one shows 7.2 to 7.8.?
?
The 5,4 volt batteries will last for a couple of hours while listening only, no transmitting.? I guess I should replace the two showing only 5.4 volts when they come off the charger?
?

Hi Joe,

Somewhere on the Internet [Youtube?] I saw information which illustrated how to cut the battery case in half[!]. It is hermetically sealed and can be cut at the seam that holds the two halves of the clamshell case together.?

Desolder the tabs from the discharged batteries once the case is opened, replace the discharged batteries with new, then solder the tabs back on to the new batteries. For the life of me I cannot find it now.

Perhaps others will chime in with a link!

Bonne Chance!

Alain

This is one video I found that might help, Joe.

The above is a link to an X-ACTO razor saw that can cut the battery pack seams, disclose the offending batteries.
?
Hope this helps!

Hi Joe,
By searching posts in this forum, you can find many ways to repair, replace, or substitute batteries for your FT-60.? Long ago, I posted one about replacing the NiMH cells with 2 Li-ion cells, for example.? Choose a solution that seems to be a little bit challenging and you'll learn something new while fixing up your radio.
Cheers,

I don't remember if there is a temperature sensor in the battery pack, but if so, be sure to keep it in there to avoid overheating and a fire. Use as low a heat when soldering as possible to avoid damaging it.

Do a Google search for "3d print FT60" and "3d print FT-60" or similar.? You'll find printable STL files for the radio.

I didn't want to do my own printing (I don't need another hobby!), but our library has one for public use.? Better yet (IMHO), check this site out to find a printing company for your project:

I made one of these for my FT-60 and it turned out very nice:

Using the above quote site, I got the battery compartment printed (along with a few other parts) for about $11 including shipping.

Your results may vary.

Hope you can make what you need!
