Re: FT-60 powers off and on when PTT is pushed

I think some rechargeables can be slightly larger than AA batteries. I have seen where someone tried to fit rechargeables into the AA battery case and they can't get the last one into the case.

Thanks for the reply.

That's true!

Thank you for the one-half page cheat sheet on "Shack Aids", Clint K6LCS.? It's a treasure trove of simplified programming dxns.

Re: newbie query..........what and why for all the features?

Sure Nick. I get its value in cases where I have to reload everything. I expect not to be reprogramming the ht much after setup.

I only reset it to factory defaults as a (re)learning exercise. I didn’t lose much because I only had a (small) handful of repeaters stored.

I bought a lithium battery pack and wall wart charger from Amazon or eBay a few years back.? Suits my needs.? I also have two MAHA chargers, a multitude of NIMH AA cells and two battery trays.? I'm set.

Remember, nobody says that you have to use ALL the bells and whistles. For example, I have no reason to use the Banks feature. As such, on the FT-60, all the basic features can easily be entered by the keyboard without going into the SET menu. The FT-60 is truly the easiest ht to manually program. Clint”s. Cheat sheet is a marvelous aid in using the basics.?

I must politely disagree with Phil, KC6OEI about his desire to “determined to master this thing without resorting to a programming cable”.

This “thing” you are trying to master is a protocol established by one or a bunch of engineers in the way they chose. They had an objective (or design goal) in mind and it might have been “minimize key strokes” or “minimize hardware complexity” or whatever, and they chose a (programming) method to do that. In essence, you are trying to master their method. It’s likely easy if your head works like theirs but maybe not.

It seems to me that MY design goal would be to have the most basic setup functions (Freq, power, PL, squelch method, etc.) be so obvious that anyone could do it without a manual. Then I would add enhanced features with multiple button pushes using function keys or mental telepathy or whatever.

Not using a programming cable is your prerogative and might suit your philosophy and needs but I, for one, enjoy the convenience of that capability and recognize I am SOL for a quick change if and a PC are not available.

I actually applaud your tenacity and drive and wish I could master that approach.

As an aside, IMHO there needs to be a better philosophy of programming (taxonomy?) that achieves what we need and is so idiot-proofed that a mistake is impossible.

I think the FT60r approaches that, but not quite.

Re: FT-60 powers off and on when PTT is pushed

YOU ARE LUCKY TO GET NINE YERS?OUT OF THEM,.

Re: FT-60 powers off and on when PTT is pushed

You might consider getting the empty battery tray and using six AA cells. I use NiMH cells because they do a great job and have a long life in terms of how long they stay charged when not being used and how many charge cycles they will last.

I use the Eneloops brand (originally a Sanyo product, but now a Panasonic brand). I bought three "sets" at Costco a number of years ago so I could have three four-cell chargers (two for my FT-60R so I can charge all of a six-cell set at once and one for the outboard flash in?my camera bag). For each of those applications, I carry the chargers and a spare set of batteries.

Each of my Eneloop sets came with a charger; 8 AA cells; 4 AAA cells; and two adapters in each of two sizes (C cell and D cell) that allow using the AA cells for C and D cell replacements. I don't see that brand on Costco's website currently, but they do show "Duracell Ion Speed 4000 Rechargeable Battery Kit with 4 x AA Batteries and 4 x AAA Batteries" (and a charger). Amazon shows an assortment of NiMH battery packages so they shouldn't be hard to obtain.

There are different grades of these batteries and their physical sizes may differ. Perhaps some of the folks in this group could comment on that--I haven't experienced that with the cells I have, but it could be an issue with? cells fitting into the battery tray.

I’ve even printed yet another copy of the manual because my original and prior printed copies ?are…around here, somewhere.

I call the Set options Set-and-Forget because there are so many. The manual is a must here because the abbreviations tell me nothing.

One incorrect button push will put the radio in the wrong mode for accomplishing what I’m trying to do. It’s because every button has three functions depending on press technique: momentary, press-and-hold and Function-button-first.

Putting programmed memories into banks seems awkward. There’s a lot of switching modes back and forth and dialing a bank and then a memory before I can store what I want, where I want. It feels to me like I’m doing everything twice.

As a degreed electrical engineer, I’m determined to master this thing without resorting to a programming cable and software. I’m smarter than a piece of technology!
