Hey Jerry

I would like to tell you that since the 4-way Yaesu plus seems to be it's "achilles heel" so to speak I would urge you to spend a bit more NOW and get an original product made to specifications, vs. spend a bit less now and get a non-conforming product that will truly ruin your experience.

If the plug is even a tiny bit off, then you will have problems. Please don't make my mistake(s) notice the S there, yes by the time all was said and done I advocate that anything that plugs into that 4-way port on the FT-60R/E go genuine product and don't fall for any of "I have it for half price, or even less" crap. At the end of the day you want to use the damn thing.

My 2-cents advice.

Hey Larry

It's OK, we all were in your shoes at one point. This stuff is technical and is not easy so don't feel so bad. Plus Elmering is at the heart of our hobby so you are not asking too much.

BUT...

It would be much easier to start with a question and then we can go from there. Exactly what are you trying to do? Then we can show you multiple ways of getting to what you want to get to.

I can teach you how to fish, what equipment you need, techniques to use, but to explain the whole ocean ecosystem is going to take some work.

Go for a question.

Re: Charging the FT-60 with the desktop cradle or is there another w

Jim K5JG

A change was made to the FT-60's due to a law passed in California that
required any charging device above 5 volts to have an automatic
shut-off, which the NC-88 wall-wart does not have. So, beginning with
radios manufactured in early 2013, FT-60 batteries can no longer be
charged via the radio's external power jack. All FT-60's made since then
come with the drop-in desktop charger which does have automatic shut-off.

The radio can still be powered from 12v through the external power jack.
Yaesu sells the EDC-6 power cable that you can attach to a 12v power supply.

Jerry,
No it does not.
The battery contains it's own charger circuit so removing the 'guts' of the drop in charger and wiring the
wallwart directly to the salient contacts would work.
Make sure to label the charger for only a LiPo battery, as dropping in a NiMh battery
by accident would/could make for some interesting pyrotechnics effects!

You might think about buying the battery tray, which holds six AA cells. Then fill it with Eneloop Nickle-metal-hydroxide?cells. Greater capacity; more recharge cycles over their life; holds charge much better when in storage, much cheaper in the long run. If you often need to replace batteries quickly, think about getting two trays.

I buy mine in combo packages (from Costco)--comes with a 4-cell charger, and typically 10 AA cells plus four AAA cells and, depending on the package, adapters for D and C cells as well. Two packs give you charging for all six cells in an FT-60 set at once (plus room for two other cells) plus three sets of six cells for the radio (and a couple of spares).? (Note that the online products at Costco don't necessarily match what's in a "brick and mortar" store and that the specific pack contents does change?from time to?time.)

Some hams on here have reported that the AA cells may come in two different capacities and the larger ones might not quite fit the FT-60 and battery tray. You might want to search the forum for those reports so you don't get the wrong ones. (I think someone may have even reported how to fix that problem, but I am not sure.)

Good luck and 73,
