Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Hi Mike,
My original pack also had 1 bad cell in it.? Maybe 2.? I took them all out and disposed of the bad cells.? Of the remaining cells, I pulled the tabs off the (-) terminals, folded the tab back and forth on the (+) terminals and applied a blob of solder there to form something resembling a button.? These are now in domestic service for various toys, holiday lights, etc.? Then I put 2 Li-ion flat cells into the original case (details posted in this forum).? The pack is now lighter than before and has more capacity.
Cheers

Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Mike,
I used don't have an access to spot welder so had to carefully solder the cells together with a piece of wire. I kept all the internals like the fuse and diodes for sensing the cell temperature during charging. In general, it is not recommend to directly solder the cells which I fully agree. However, if one works fast with a low melting point solder this can be done.

I recommend Powerwerx because I know them, they are hams, they provide excellent products and support ¡

When I found 2700mAH MiMH cells that were reliable, it was cool to be able to state, ¡°Darned near TWICE the?
1400 mAH capacity of the stock FT-60R battery ¡ ¡° - followed by my spiel of again doubling battery life by acquiring?
a good aftermarket antenna and turning down TX power to 2W - QUADRUPLING battery life ¡

I use a Maha individual-cell intelligent charger. A couple different ones, actually. They have served me well for?
MANY years. So, yep ?- I haven¡¯t looked elsewhere, because I have found NiMH Nirvana.

OH - And i am majority stockholder in Powerwerx.(1)

Thanks Nick, you can see my reply about a j-pole above.

Phil, I have been off the air for 20 years or so and picked up this ft60-r nice radio, but I live in a low elevation area & was trying to get by with the stock whip. hopefully the whip from diamond will do the trick. I know a something like a j-pole would be a great improvement, but with a HT I don't want coax hanging from the antenna connector. Any whip over 15" would also be impracticable for me.If the Diamond doesn't get it, then I am going to just sell the 60

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

My apologies. The Diamond antenna IS superior in both directions. I momentarily thought we were discussing performance with versus without the O-ring. Buy and use the Diamond with confidence.

Have you considered an Ed Fong twin lead dual-band j-pole?? AA3T

Thanks Mike, as long as it holds the antenna securely, if not then I might be able to rig something up, or contact Esty.

I just hopes this antenna is an improvement over the stock antenna, having problems hitting repeaters on 2 & 70cm. If not I will return the antenna & sell the ft60. Can't put up any sort of other antenna.

Chris, may be for cosmetic & stability.

Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Peter,

One of the original Yaesu packs I have is partially opened by the previous owner, it has a bad cell in it.? I have been thinking about attempting to replace the cells myself but without a proper way to solder the tabs, I am pretty reluctant in trying.

I'd like to know your process? for rebuilding the pack.

Mike

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

My SRH77CA is a few years old, as is my FT-60R. The antenna did not come with an O-ring and mates nicely to my HT without it. With the?antenna in place, I can barely see the retaining nut that holds the SMA female on the HT. Unless physical dimensions have changed, my guess is that the O-ring isn't required, but it *might* be intended to keep the SMA connector from unscrewing. That's a problem I haven't had.

Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Clint,

Somehow I knew you were going to suggest Powerwerx. ; )?

I've seen you recommend them in other threads and on social media platforms before.? Question though.? Did you try out other brands before the Powerwerx batteries or did you pick that particular brand based on research and have stuck with them through the years?

I don't doubt the quality and reliability, as they usually rank within the top 5 from research I've gathered.? I am guilty of analysis paralysis at times, I like comparing specs, looking at the numbers and hearing first hand testimonials.

Are those little rings just cosmetic?

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

Gary,

I have a Nagoya NA-761 and a Comet MH-255 that was included with one of the FT-60s I traded for.? With either antenna attached to the FT-60, there is a noticeable gap between the base of the antenna and radio of about 1/8 inch.? The o-ring that was supplied for some of the antennas I have bought don't fill the gap completely.? I don't know the dimensions of the o-ring that is supplied with the Diamond antenna but I would guess it won't completely fill the gap.? This is just a guess on my part.
Most of the o-rings sit on top of the nut of the sma connector on the FT-60.? If the o-ring that is supplied fits properly, sure why not use it, if there is a noticeable gap.

I have seen some .stl files out on the interwebs for a 3-D printed ring that fills that gap perfectly.? If my memory serves me, someone on Etsy is selling one for 5 or 6 bucks.? Also, SignalStuff sells one on their website also.

Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

I use?in the battery holder. There is a 2450mAh version but these tend to have higher self discharge rate.

I have also successfully rebuilt one of the original Yaesu battery packs with 1900mA Ikea Ladda's. It charges well in SBH-13 desktop charger.

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

Well, I ordered it & then saw it came with a o-ring. Will be Thursday. Just thought I would ask.
