Re: problem FT-60

Symptoms of a low battery condition. How are you charging the battery? And how old is the battery?

In the interim, before you get a new battery, you might try setting your transmit power to medium or low.

Re: problem FT-60

I want to echo Chuck's response except to add that it's not impossible but very difficult to replace the bad cell. Among the many problems are those that Chuck mentioned in that the ultrasonic welding is so perfect in achieving what appears to be a single piece of plastic out of two halves.
Maybe try:
1) carefully cut the case in two with great care so as to keep an even bonding line when the time comes to rejoining them
2) determine which cell is bad and remove it. To get a replacement that works satisfactorily one needs to determine cell characteristics such as capacity and a dozen other cell characteristics that went into the OEM cell selection.
3) spot weld the cell into the series string being careful not to overheat the cell case. This requires a reasonably good cell spot welder and considerable practice. The new connector ribbon must be long enough but not too long or you can't reassemble the cell stack so the plastic case will properly fit and can be welded together. Test the pack prior to re-assembly.
4) Re-bond the two case halves together using plastic welding, super glue, or any of a number of bonding techniques that create a thin bond line.
5) After you did all that and the battery case won't fit the original FT60, go out and buy a new battery pack and enjoy your radio.
They are really one on the best radios around and it's hard to improve on Yaesu's original design or construction. How do I know all this? I did this as an exercise to assess how much trouble it would be and found it was really a lot of trouble getting everything just right. It's really a kind of fool's errand and, to me, the cost far exceeds the benefit.

Re: problem FT-60

Classic case of a bad cell in the battery pack. About the only fix is
to buy a replacement pack. The case halves are welded together
using ultrasonics ans few people have the needed spot welder to
attach a replacement cell and ultrasonic welder to reattach the case
halves when split.

VAC-370 Fast Charger for sale

This charger is surplus to my needs as I have converted my FT-60R's NiMH pack to Li-ion.? This is the charger that came with my radio.
The base is marked "CD-29" and "VAC-370".? The wall transformer (heavy; not a switcher) is marked "PA-23B".
$25 USD plus postage from Point Roberts, WA or Vancouver, BC.
Contact me using "Private" mode if interested.? I'll post to this thread again once it's gone.

Re: CD47 charger

Clint,
I happened to have purchased it from ebay.
I queried for li-ion ft60 charger, both ebay and amazon
showed the cd-47 as the charger 3 contact charger with the double contact on the
left side. My litium battery has the correct contacts. My
old Nimh has the double contacts on the opposite side.

Left new cd-47, right original charger from my ft60.
My li-ion battery fits only the left charger.

Re: CD47 charger

Yes, as Clint said. Yaesu CD-47 is a NiCd/NiMH charger.

I am not even aware the Yaesu ever made Li-ion battery pack for FT60 so a Lion charger would make no sense.

There are several so called CD-47 charger that claim to be for Yaesu radios and can charge Li-on packs on amazon/ebay/aliexpress. These are not made by Yasesu and who knows what they really are.

Re: CD47 charger

Clint,

The charger the correct charger is for the Li-ion battery.
A/ it was purchased as a Li-ion charger
B/ The contacts are for Li-ion (contacts for Nimh
are reversed) E.g the Nimh battery would not 'fit'
C/ Everybody (Amazon and Ebay), sells the cd-47 as the li-ion charger.
Some chargers have 4 contacts, some 3, all are listed as Li-ion.
I suspected that the 4 contacted chargers would do both types, but that seems to be wrong.

My (new) LI-ion charger has double contacts on the left side and my ancient
Nimh charger has them on the right side, no mistake to make.

My Li-ion charges correctly to 8.1 volts (a little low).? The supplied
wallwart will charge it to 8.4 volts.

CD47 charger

I just purchased an cd-47 charger which has 3 contacts and will charge my current Li-ion battery which also has 3 contacts. However, all new Li-ion batteries show 4 contacts! Will these newer batteries properly charge in my 3 contact charger? Or do I have to find a cd47 with 4 contacts?

Currently I have no working NiMH batteries for my ft60.

Thanks Rudi
