Re: now I are one!

Rick,

?

Welcome to ham radio!? I also checked the FCC database and didn't find your name (no Sparber in all of Arizona).? When you do get your call sign, there are two nets I recommend for new hams.?

?

1.? The Arizona Emergency Net - Maricopa (AEN-MAR).? We meet every Monday night at 9 p.m. on the Metrolink repeater constellation; Shaw Butte 147.24+, Mt. Ord 146.92-, Scottsdale Airpark 146.76-, and Usery Pass 146.86-.? All these 2-meter repeaters use a 162.2 Hz tone.? The Daisy Mountain 448.375 repeate is also in the link.? It uses a 100.0 Hz tone.? This net is for 'training and exercise in the public service communication arts'.? Check the net website at .

?

2.? The New Ham Net.? The meet every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on the 442.800+ repeater.? It uses a 100.0 Hz tone.? They have an open format where beginners can come and ask questions (there are no stupid qestions) and experienced operators show up to answer the questions.

?

I don't currently belong to a club, but I do urge you to join one.? The two strong clubs in the east valley are the Mesa Amatuer Radio Club and the Superstion Amatuer Radio Club.? Pick the one you think will meet your needs and attend every meeting you can.? Also, I'm sure they are both planning activities for Field Day on the last weekend of June.? If you can attend, do.? You will have an opportunity to network with other hams, operate equipment that you won't be able to afford for a while, and just have a great time.

?

When you feel you are read, visit and sign up for some public service events.?

?

See you one the radio!

?

?????????????? I just had the same problem using Chirp and an FTDI cable. It reads the radio well, but would not write. I finally gave up and purchased the FTB60 software (downloadable) from Bob Freeth. I’ve used his excellent software on other radios, and, for $15.00, it’s a bargain. Reads and writes perfectly!

Repeater question

When I see "Repeater Heading: north" does this mean that the main radiating lobe is pointing north? Could not find the answer with Google.

What am I doing wrong?

You should investigate the programming software for the radio to solve
this problem. The problem is that you have to follow the programming
instructions perfectly to program in frequencies in banks.

FT Commander help

I'm having a problem writing to my FT-60. I have written to it once and I can read from the radio. I had to to re-arrange the ole ham shack. All cables disconnected and plugged back in. I tried to download the FTDI (?) drivers for windows 8 that didn't work so went back to my ?original set up of using a com port to USB adapter. The control panel says the device is working properly. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Re: External antennas

Here in the mountains it's not unusual when talking to someone who?is mobile to have a long pause in a conversation. We just wait for the answer because we assume they are dealing with traffic or curves. There is a short section of I-40 called Buzzards Roost curves where I always put down the mike no matter what the traffic flow is. Even when talking with another person in the car you have to use some common sense on when to shut up. Many times I have been stuck behind somebody going slow or didn't seee the light change, who was paying more attention to their conversation with another person than their driving, so you can't always blame it on electronic communications.
?
I also use my cruise control when on the highway to make sure I maintain a constant speed. Mostly to keep me from going too fast, those six years driving the German Autobahns die hard. I hate getting stuck behind someone who can't make up their mind what speed they are going. It uses more gas too when you vary your speed.

Right. Various studies show that distracted driving produces a skill
level roughly equivalent to basic drunk driving...

We always think that we are immune from the problem... until we discover
we weren't.

To the extent that anyone feels compelled to drive and communicate
electronically at the same time, get into a straight, slow lane where
there is no cross traffic, no pedestrians and very light flow in your
direction. That, at least, reduces the variables you need to attend to.

Re: FT-60 User's Manual

Jim K5JG

Mark,

I agree 100%.

About the only thing the FT-530 lacked was the ability to be programmed via computer which wasn't common (or available at all) at the time. Of course, it only had 41 memories for each band so programming them manually wasn't much of an issue.

I had an FT-51R and it was a good radio, too, but I didn't care much for its display.

Re: Quick Tickets (was now I are one!)

Great Stories!!!!

Yep, my first time took something like that time period, KA4FXR was my "interim" call sign, Novice.? I did not upgrade in a timely fashion, so I lost the license, marriage, kids, Masters Degree, softball, WORK!!!, etc...??

Many years later, I did it again.? Went from tech+ to extra between August and December.? I was? not one of the "smart guys" who sat down and went through novice, tech, general, advanced, extra in one sitting...

A co-worker told me how he got his KH ... call sign and lived in VA.? He and a friend (Navy Code experts) walked into an FCC office in Hawaii one day and asked to take the extra exam, as they were exempt from? taking the 20 WPM exam.? So they were granted the test, and passed it.? The FCC wanted a copy of their Advanced licenses.? HUH???? OOPS!!!? So, they sat for all the rest that day!!!

Thousands upon thousands of stories out there...

Steve,

I've got a couple that are even better.....

My son passed his Tech exam on a Saturday morning in February of 1996,
and his callsign was issued the following Tuesday, just like the
situation you described. However, what makes it a little different is
that the intervening Monday was President's Day, a Federal holiday!

A couple of years ago the VEs at our local hamfest here in the Dallas
area made a special arrangement with the VEC (don't remember if it was
the ARRL or W5YI VEC) to process the test results immediately on that
Saturday and send them electronically to the FCC whose computer
automatically processed them as soon as they were received. The new hams
had their callsigns within an hour or two of passing their tests.
Admittedly, special arrangements were made to pull it off, but it's
still amazing, especially to a long time ham like me who had to wait six
long weeks for his Novice ticket to arrive in the US Mail.
