Aviation Frequencies Problem Solved
开云体育6/18/14? Wednesday morning ? ? Many thanks to Dave? WB6DHW, and Jim ?K5JG, for the solution to my problem.? Somehow the Operating Settings for aviation frequencies in my RT Systems software had been toggled from AM to FM, and I missed that detail in my troubleshooting.? Pilot error? ? Ockham's Razor, the solution with the fewest assumptions (eg? - the simplest) is usually the right one.? So, that new antenna I bought for the mobile wasn’t really necessary?? No wonder it had no effect.? Looks great, though.? J ? Never even thought of examining the database for the Operating Mode setting.? That WILL be the first thing I check next time. ? As others have said here, don't call CQ on 2 Meters, just throw out your call sign.? If you hear the repeater tone or ID, you've probably hit it, although your signal may not be intelligible if you're running low power off the rubber antenna or are far away from the repeater.? 开云体育I figured out my mistake. Although I set up to generate a tone and did set the tone’s frequency correctly, I did not save those settings correctly. That is all straightened out now (I think). But, over the past 20 years, with the proliferation of cell phones, texting and Facebook, etc., it seems that there's not as much chatter on the radio as there used to be. One formerly popular repeater here, which has coverage from slightly north of Los Angeles all the way down to San Diego, remains quiet nearly all day now. When I first got my license, in 1986, this repeater was so busy you couldn't break in no matter how mars you tried. It was constant chatter 24/7 on that machine. I'll spin the dial and go through all my 2m and 440 repeaters I've got programmed in my radio and often won't hear a darned thing on any one of them. These are the times. On the plus side, it's almost like having a private repeater whenever you want to have one since nobody else seems to be on it anymore. It's not common to say "CQ" on repeaters, just say your call sign and that you are listening, like Larry said.? I simply say, "W5ETA, listening", it's also common to say, "W5ETA, mobile" (when you are in your vehicle).? Either way, that's how it's done on FM repeaters, at least in my neck of the woods.
