I guess i dont understand why there would be any problem using?any alternative dc power source and leave the battery in the radio? All any ht want's at the ext dc port is whatever the dc voltage the manufacturer suggest's, and the center pin + or - ? I wired up 2 -? 2.9ah 12 volt sla batteries in parallel?and mounted them on the back of my bicycle with a y connector and power up, charge my Yaesu VX-7R and cell phone without any problems. ? In my experience, an external dc power source has worked well. But yes, take out the attached battery pack or you will have a problem.

In my experience, an external dc power source has worked well. But yes, take out the attached battery pack or you will have a problem. The way I understand it, and have been told, yes, you could use a 12 volt gell cell battery, but you definately want to take the battery pack out! Cause, like I said, I have been told, that the battery pack will get cooked! Correct me if I am wrong on this please!

FT-60 Commander not working on Seven x64

Impossible to work with the FT60 Commander with the x64 version of Seven. You get first the error 13 in the popup and then the progrma show a empty grid. Impossible to select the buttons or other functions.
In a virtual machien as 'Xp mode' this is ok. The problem seems to come from the version of programming tools (VB6) not support the X64 Os as Seven. |

My understanding is that this DC cord will allow you to charge the battery packs. There are 3rd party products which allow for this type of operation. Sadly, a quick google search didn't come up with the folks that I remembered could provide this. However, I am sure that if you keep looking around you'll find it.

Water Damaged - suggestions...

Purchased this model after getting my license a number of years ago. I remember reading (and the confirming) that this model was water resistant prior to taking along with me on a canoe trip with the scouts. During the trip we were sunk twice - completely submerging the canoe and my radio.
I noticed immediately that water was able to get in and cause some fogging to occur between the view window and the LCD. I didn't bother turning it on, figuring something else go wet inside. Now, a week later, the radio won't turn on. Looking for suggestions - is this something I could repair? Is there a shop you know of that could repair the damage cheaper than buying a new (hopefully water proof) model? Mike KI6NLC |

Hi all.
I just ordered a FT-60R and I wanted to pre program the software with a import from my Commander export file for my VX-7R. I open up the FT-60 Commander software and I can only open up a new file. I can't edit anything or import anything. Some times I get a " Runtime error 13 Type mismatch" and then the program closes. I have tried to run it on Windows XP and Windows 7. Any help would be awesome. Seeing how it is a runtime error I would think it would have something to do with Java but I have Java installed] for both OSs. I also can't chick on any of the boxes and most of the drop down menus. I have never seen this before. Do I need to register or something? Thanks. 73 de W2EEC Eric |

I want to thank all of you who responded to my post. I learned a lot. It was an Echolink repeater and I was able to learn about that and also download the software to use that repeater.

I will try the simplex method of transmitting as I haven't tried that. I belong to the South Jersey Radio Club and we have our next meeting in 2 weeks. I haven't done my first contact yet and am waiting to try it with a friend in my group at the meeting. Thanks for the links to the information on transmission, and programming. I bought the software for the ft-60 and downloaded Commander so I can see which is easier to program and have my settings so I don't have to worry about not having the right PL for the repeater. I just passed my General test last week and I am going to buy a new rig ( got my eye on a special one already!) to be able to use HF. This is all so exciting! I love my ft-60 and feel I couldn't have made a better choice of mobile. I also appreciate the information you all who responded gave me. OK, so I'm a bit confused.
The manufacture list a dc power cord accessory to use with or without a cigarette lighter plug. So, then I would assume that you could transmit and receive using a 12 volt gell cell battery by using the aforementioned power cable with the factory battery pack installed? The manual is lacking on describing this operating mode. I am interested in using the radio for remote operations at 5 watt setting for the better part of a day or two. |

I think there is an all-metal adapter -- Kenwood maybe that might work as well. I have seen something coming in from Hong Kong. Anybody use one of those??
The BNC/reverse SMA adapter available for the Wouxun HTs is the best design that I have seen. Frankly, in words of one syllable, SMA connectors suck. BNC is not far behind.. /paul W3FIS |

outside of that connector, and not break the top where the connector is
located.? Been there, done that.? In the case of the Gulya connector,
it will actually crack if extreme force is exerted on it, but will spare the
plastic top.? A little glue and the material goes back together fine.

Adapters

We are all probably aware of the Gulya adapters for BNC to SMA for the FT-60R in order to take the strain off of the SMA fitting. However, the regular BNC to SMA fittings are cheaper and easier to come by. A trip to the hardware store this morning and 56 cents for some Tygon tubing (1/2") does the trick.
Warm a piece of tubing with a hair dryer so that it slips on from the SMA end up over the knurled part of the adapter. Then, with an Exacto knife or single edged razor blade, trim the tube to the proper length. Simple fix, cheap. This works well with the VX-170 or VX-177 as well. When the tube cools, it will stay in place quite nicely. /paul W3FIS |

Commander columns won't appear.
Hi Folks,
Don't know if this is the right place, but here goes. In FT-60 Commander, I turned off some columns to make a cleaner printout and now when I click all the columns back on, they won't reappear, no way now how. I even uninstalled the software, restarted and reloaded. I did it b4 and it worked fine. This time, who knows what changed. Duh? Wayne VE3THN |

I can't comment on your being able to hear stations from California, the Virgin Islands and Australia, except to say that you need some special propagation conditions (like tropospheric ducting or Sporadic E) for that to happen. It is is not something you can count on, and it won't happen very often. You can read a bit about that at the following website: In fact, I doubt you could hear stations as far away as Australia and California only due to favorable propagations conditions. I suspect you were listening to a repeater and the stations you heard were communicating on IRLP. See About the frequency switch between receiving and transmitting, you were listening to a repeater, and the difference you observed between the two frequencies is the repeater shift?(which is 5 MHz for UHF). See p. 19 of of your FT-60R Operating Manual ("Repeater Operation"). The fact that the other club member was not able to hear you, doesn't necessarily mean you were not transmitting. You mention the PL setting, that means you were using a repeater, and you may have had the repeater shift wrong (although it is automatic on the FT-60R unless you override that automatic feature). ?Why don't you and another club member agree to talk on a simplex frequency? No repeater shift and no PL to worry about, all you need to enter is the frequency. If you and your friend are line of sight and not too far away from each other, you should hear each other. If you are not heard, then you can ask about whether your antenna is connected correctly, etc. Good luck. Bernard - VA7BLR |
