Re: So I am hopelessly lost on this FT-60R

Scott,
I can empathize you as I got my Technicians ticket a week ago yesterday and my FT 60 a week ago today.? I did buy the RT programing software and cable and loaded my radio with all the repeaters on 2 meter and 70 cm within 62 miles of my location (there is a? reason for this). I was wondering about first contacts and such until i was scanning the local repeaters and found a NET being run by a local ham club. It was muy iteresante. I suggest that you google local ham NETs and see what you come up with. One of the ones I hit yesterday was a "Tech Net" in the morning (09:00 PDT or thereabouts) and that's all I know, it was on a linked system, probably IRLP and was covering several states. It was fun to listen to. Anyway, find some local ham clubs say withing about 75 miles and see what you can come up with and if you are using rt -Systems software there are a ton of You Tubes on the subject of? Programing the FT 60 and the rt Systems webpage has several training videos. They are not exciting but their is good solid training to be found.?

Re: Barrery Suggestions for FT60r

Cliff,

Excellent suggestions you make! Thanks for sharing.

?For the same reasons you gave, I use a non-telescoping Diamond SRH-77CA and a monaural wired Audio Technica ear piece plugged into my Yaesu speaker mike as my standard rig in a chest harness.?

With this setup, I set transmit power to low for short distance simplex or mid- (2 Watts) to hit most repeaters within 15 mile (as long as I avoid body shielding the antenna). This about doubles my operating time on a battery in a 20/80 transmit/receive situation.

If someone else around me wants to hear my radio, I just pull the earpiece plug out of the speaker mike until they have heard enough, then plug the earpiece back in.

The earpiece is better for hearing the radio in noisy environments, and still let's me hear and talk to people around me in the environment with my other ear. The earpiece also doesn't interfere with my hats or helmet.

Only three options I would consider -

1. Genuine Yaesu battery pack from hamradio.com

2. Any aftetmarket pack that batteriesamerica.com offers

3 Yaesu's FBA-25 alkaline tray and Maha/Powerwerx NiMH AA cells (about 2500mAH) and appropriate charger.

Hello, do you recommend these batteries or better buy the original Yaesu?.

Battery FNB-83 in Desktop Charger SBH-13

Hello everyone.
I have put the battery mentioned in the charger indicated in the title to charge.
But the charging light turns red and intermittently.
It seems to me that this did not happen before, is it normal?
Thank you.

Re: Barrery Suggestions for FT60r

I recently modified a ‘dead’ battery case to hold a dual 18650 cell holder by cutting a hole in the back. I included a BMS module, bought off EBay, which fits in the ‘groove’ between the cells.?

The cell holder protrudes by about 3 or 4 mm but the belt clip still functions etc.?

For charging, you apply 9 v to the battery terminals, the BMS does the rest. I have a charger I previously build, using a back from a PMR radio. Originally it charged the supplied batteries, now I have added a switch to select the correct charging regime.

Very easy to make!

I used a solder tag that fitted over the SMA connector and 19.5in of wire. Some heat shrinking insulation.
Some use a crimp terminal.
On my FT70 I put it under a screw that holds the belt clip.

Re: Newcomer

… The automatic off after a set period is not off enough to stop the battery going flat. So alkaline cells are vulnerable.
I don't understand this statement. “Use your radio, and your batteries will drain.”

… Some NiMh cells have a significant self discharge rate so it's charge before use.
NOT cells from reputable manufacturers/suppliers. Like these:

… I use a tiger/rat tail/counterpoise …
If you’re not making it FM voice 2m/440 at 2W TC power and a better antenna, then
you won;t make it with other add-ons ...

… and a Comet SMA24 for extended range.
THAT’s a great antenna. You can coil it up and store in a ZipLoc(tm) baggie when not
in use. Almost as good a performer as the Smiley 270 antenna.

G'day Giovanni,
I agree that the FT60s are all just as great.
But there is always a but.
The automatic off after a set period is not off enough to stop the battery going flat. So alkaline cells are vulnerable.?
Some NiMh cells have a significant self discharge rate so it's charge before use.?
The Yaesu charging cradle is very useful.
I use a tiger/rat tail/counterpoise and a Comet SMA24 for extended range.

Yaesu started shipping the FT-60R - US model - with a different charger in 2013-ish.

But no - your "E" with be as magnificent as any of them!

Batteries are available from your authorized Yaesu dealer. OR ... in the US,?
batteriesamerica.com has options.

AND - the Yaesu FBA-25 AA Case - you can populate it with six NiMH cells or AA
Alkalines - and have full TX power available (if you really need it).

Newcomer

Hello everybody!
I am in the process of buying an used FT-60E. Since the FT-60R and FT-60E have been produced for a number of years, I would like to know if Yaesu has introduced modifications during that period. Basically, will a 2015 model be different from a 2004 one?
