Attending ARRL SW Div Convention this Saturday?

If you are attending the ARRL SW Division Convention in Torrance this weekend ...

AND if you've been thinking of purchasing either an Elk 2M/440L5 Log Periodic, an
Arrow 146/437-10WBP, or Premier AL-800 ...

Then have I got a couple deals for you!

In conjunction with Ham Radio Outlet - Anaheim, mention "K6LCS Sat Special" at
the HRO booth at the show, and get a couple bucks off the show price on the
AL-800 and/or the Arrow ... and an impressive price of $82.95 for the Elk!

AND THERE'S MORE! Bring your receipt from the purchase of a Yaesu FT-60R that
you purchased from the fine folks at the HRO booth on Saturday to me - and the
first four who do so will be handed a Smiley 270A antenna! I will be at the show
from 7:30AM to dinner time on Saturday. Find me working the sats from the
parking structure at the times posted all over the event. Or see me right before,
during, or after my satellite show in Suites 9-11 which begins at Noon. Go ahead
and interrupt the session - I only have FOUR of these great antennas to give away!

Re: Power Problem

Bill Boyer

The power plug is the same as the FT-817ND, IIRC. One of the issue we see is the little yellow ring at the end breaking off and getting lodged in the power jack, rendering it unusable.

? From the description of the problem, it sounds like the power Jack is
bad.? There is a switch contact that opens up when the plug is inserted
that re-directs power to charge the battery and power the radio. I would
guess that the switch contact on the power jack is not making contact
when the plus is removed from the radio.? I would think that it could be
repaired fairly easily. I agree that you should call Yaesu and see what
they say.

Re: Power Problem

Probably you have a dead battery now. ?And that's why HAMs said they used a timer (setting to charge 5-10 minutes in every 30 minutes or an hour to prevent overcharging) to charge the battery whilst let the rig sitting on the charging cradle.

Try borrow a battery and see if it will solve your problem. ?Then you know if it is a dead battery.

Call Yaesu tech support and ask them. It's free. I would not do any resets until you see if the problem can be cured without doing the resets. You don't want to loose all of your memory channels if you don't need to.

Re: FT-60R worked great through Irene

Good idea. Easy to do that. I have the FT-60R on a light timer. Could easily add the SLA as well, but before the timer, of course.

I usually have the SLA out for something or other at least once a month.

/paul W3FIS

Re: FT-60R worked great through Irene

Keep SLA batteries charged.? After 3 months off the charger, the plates will become sulfated and the battery cannot be rescued (I learned this the hard way).? I keep my?2 Ah and & Ah SLA batteries permanently connected to the charger.

?

The 2 Ah is connected to a wall-wart type automatic charger; the charging circuit is inside the wall wart.

?

The 7 Ah is inside a manufactured "power station".? I think the charging circuitry is inside the power station, which receives its charging power from a "dumb" wall wart.

The car lighter adapter and a 7 AH gel cell provide an excellent emergency supply for the FT-60R. Fit a "pigtail" to the gel cell, as well as a cable for its charger. Doubles as a "bench" power supply, or running my other QRP stuff. The SLA gel cells don't seem to "self discharge" too badly, FWIIW.

Keep SLA batteries

A number of the generic camera cases fit well. I have a nice vinyl case some sun glasses came in. Holds the antenna as well. A insulated lunch bag makes a good small "go" bag, FWIIW.

Re: Battery Charging issue

Paul W. Ross

FWIIW, I have the charging cradle. I also have a light timer, set to come on for 15-20 minutes every 24 hours. The FT-60R sits in the cradle all the time. Thus, a "top off" trickle charge. If I use the radio a lot, then I bypass the timer (switch on it for this) until it is charged, then put it back on "trickle." I assume you could do this with the "wall wart" charger as well.

Re: Battery Charging issue

Bill Boyer

Sounds like the batteries have developed some internal resistance and can no longer supply enough current for high power operation.

From: kc9foz

I have two FT-60R's and they have not been used in about 6 months. I charged them up overnight and for some reason when I try to transmit on high the radio shuts off and turns back on. I can turn them down to low power and they transmit just fine, however on mid and high they power off and back on. After charging they are showing 8.4 volts when I turn them on. They used to transmit on high all the way down to 7.2 volts.

I have switched batteries between the two of them. Both are approximately 2 years old and were purchased at the same time.

Re: Battery Charging issue

Jack

Kevin is absolutely right. ?I've had batteries go bad and turn off the minute I tried to transmit. ?On low power, all was well. ?Buy the new batteries and your problems should be over.

Be aware that Yaesu makes a FNB-83 1400 mAH battery that retails for $45.00 and a FNB-V94 1800 mAH battery that retails for $34.00. ?Makes no sense but I buy the 1800 mAH battery now.

Even though the battery shows 8.4 volts, it could be bad. It also needs to produce the amps needed. ?Similar?to a car battery that goes bad, but still shows 12 volts. If a cell is bad, the battery can read 12 volts, but will not have the "juice" to crank the car engine. ?Since you have 2 radios in this state, try purchasing one new battery (which could always be used as a spare) and see if this resolves the issue.?

Or, use this as an?opportunity?to by the AA dry cell battery?adapter?and use it for the test. ?It is always good to have the dry cell battery?adapter?for?emergencies?since they are available?everywhere.

Just my 2 cents worth.
