I look up the repeaters for the locale I'm going to and program them in the radio. I also include the two simplex national calling frequencies of 146.52 VHF and 446.00 UHF. Their are also numerous Intertie networks such as the Cactus Intertie or the Central Region Intertie. You can Google 'ham radio intertie systems' and see even more.
