FT-101 EE PB1547 Voltages 7
Hello, I am new to the FT-101 world and new to the group and new to radio repair in general (and to be clear, I’m NOT an 11meter operator). I recently got my hands on a beautiful old FT-101 EE. It receives perfectly but no TX (3 watts). I have pulled all the boards and carefully cleaned all the contacts. I see no sign of damage or excessive heat in any of the components, with exception of the NEC tubes which both have some pretty dark oval staining inside. No signs of modification in this rig. I have checked the voltages on PB1547, and have found pin #2 at -72v (-60v spec), pin #4 at -21v (-20v spec) and pin #5 at -192v (-100v spec). I’m wondering if that high voltage on pin #5 is an indicator of a specific issue, or with the bias and driver voltages being within reason, could those old tubes have died from “natural causes”. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Vince Fischer, KN6KKZ Ione, Ca.

Rs: need help fixing a Yeasu ft-101-es 3
Hi All. Re: I reasnly got a partly working Yeasu FT-101-ES. I got it asis from a pawn shop. The Pawn shop got the 101 in an estate sale. The 101 came Complete expect for no A/C or DC power cord. I got an A/C power cord from eBay. The A/C cord arrived about a week ago. the 101 powers up BUT there is very little sound, just a tinny bit of static and when I turn on my FT-890 HF rig (It works great) to 3.980mhz and turned the antenna switch to the FT-101-ES and turned the mod on the 101 to tune and moved the ptt switch to MOX I got a very loud tone out of the transmit on the 101 and about 30 watts power reading on my MFJ-941E tuner with the 101 preselect, plate and load tuned right. I can hear my own voice on the FT-890 when I speak in the mic on the 101. All 3 tube filaments light up. So that tells me that the TX is working up to the driver tube and probably the finals are putting some power out. It also tells me that the 3 ganged tuned IF cans haven't been messed with (thank God for that). It has been many years since I last worked on any FT-101 anything. I am going to need some guidance on fixing this rig. All I have for test gear is an old Echo tube driven RF GEN and a Ideal 61-340 digital VOM. I sold my portable tube checker a few years back. BTW When I tried to TX on the FT-890 I heard NOTHING on the FT-101-ES Steve, kc7byp@... From the desk of the Amateur radio station of KC7BYP 1/24/2024

Hi Dan. I found out why the the reason that the receive isn't working. A suggestion from Alex N7SM at the winter field day. To check the headphone jack. Sure enough I jumped the pines on the back of the headphone jack with an alger clip and I got full sound. But I don't reremember how to get the head phone jack out.

FT-101ZD Relay Cleaning 2
I'm assuming this radio has a garden variety changeover relay but wanted to check with those more experienced with the ZD. Assuming the relay is the stock relay, are there any tricks I should be aware of or anything I should be concerned about? Is it silver plated? I don't want to damage it so can I just attack it with a dollar bill and some deoxit? Anyone? Anyone?

Yaesu ft 101E no ALC indication on SSB 7
Hello. my first post for a long while so hoping somerone can help me. I have powered up this rig after many years in (dry!) storage. I was vey encouraged when in the "Tune" mode I obtained 120W out into a dummy load. Obtained 120W out on CW and about 50W am - all to specification. Then I tried SSB (LSB on 40 meters). In order to set up the correct microphone gain I have to switch to LSB mode with the meter set to ALC. On key up the meter should read about full scale - but it doesn't move off zero! So I can't get to the stasge of adjusting the mic. gain to get correct level of modulation. I have copies the user manual and the service manual. This exact fault is actually described in the service manual (page 4-8) with relevant circuits (pages 4-9 and 4-10). However I have found that these circuit diagrams are ambiguous and in one case completely incorrect. One solution suggests "grounding the anode of D2 which can restore SSB". Fine - but which D2? The "D2" shown for the "RF speech processor" (Board PB 1534) is clearly nothing to do with the SSB circuit although D3 on that board is connected to the ALC line. I wondered if the "D2" mentioned for shorting anode to ground is the D2 in the grid circuitry of V2? I didn't want to short this to ground without some advice! so That is my query! Many thanks for any thoughts/suggestions. Peter G0LQU

FT-101E conversion to 6883B finals 10
Are there any members who have made the conversion from 6JS6C finals to 6883Bs according to the K3JLS.net documents? If so, do you have any recommendations? I've done the conversion but have yet to get my rig back on line.

FT101ZD Dial and Digital Counter Misaligned 3
Hello all. I am BRAND new to the FT101 so be patient with me. I'm new to radios of this vintage in general and just got this radio yesterday and haven't had time to play much with it but I'm pretty sure something is wrong here. See picture. The sub-dial does not show the correct number as what is indicated on the digital counter. Does something need aligned here? Is this easily fixable by someone like me or does it have to go to a shop? Or does it even really matter? The digital counter appears to be accurate. I find signals where I expect them to be on the digital counter. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

101zd low rx solution. 2
My 101zd was about 10db down on rx. I went down the troubleshooting road and cleaned all the relays I could find and checked the lamp fuse. Wound up changing the first rf amp and it came back to life. George NE2I

FT-101EE Board complement. Is it okay? 6
Hello folks, I'm trying to find out if the boards on my FT-101EE are proper enough to work happily together with the radio. I believe I have some that are okay, but possibly others that might not be optimum. The radio's serial number shown on the back plate is 6N 241468 But there is another label on the side of the inside chassis (just below where the crystal sockets are) that shows 246107. I'm a bit confused in the manual where it tells what variation you have based on S/N. Early, Mid, Late...etc I'm not sure where mine falls. So here is what I currently have onboard: BLANKER PB1582B REG PB1314A MOD PB1184A AUDIO PB1315A RF PB1181B LO-IF PB1183C HF-IF PB1180 Do any of these look like they might be a problem if they're not the right iteration of a certain board? Thanks for any help Mike KD7VRG Tucson, AZ

FT-101B Will not go into transmit with the mic or MOX switch 8
Hello all, I recently wanted to try my hand in getting an old rig. I bought an FT-101B on ebay, untested of course. It does receive pretty good on the bands but it will not transmit. The mic I have was tested on another Ft-101 and it works. I've taken it apart, pulled out all the boards, cleaned it as much as possible. I didn't see any burnt components. I took the relay out of the high voltage box where the tubes are and cleaned the contacts. I touched it with 12v and it engages. I checked the light bulb in the back and it reads good on an ohmmeter. The tubes look good. I cleaned the MOX adjust knob. My question is which board or part should I look at first. I'm kind of at a loss where to start. Thanks in advance all.

FT-101EE component question 7
Hello group, I have an FT-101EE (1976 vintage I believe) I have noticed the capacitor in the C103 position is a 1000uf 25v, whereas the schematic calls for a .047uf to be there. Schematic also shows this as being a non-electrolytic, whereas mine is. C-103 connects to the T12 transformer on the bottom of the chassis. So, question is...what is the proper cap there? Thanks! First visual inspection on my newly acquired Yaesu FT-101E. How's it look? 4
Hi everyone! I recently purchased a Yaesu FT-101E/Yaesu FL-2100/Yaesu YS 60 all for the grand total of $250. The gentleman told me everything works well. I removed the cover and took lots of pics of the FT-101E. It appears like a lot of sticky gum and dust on the components compared to the FL-2100 that appears to be like new. I think it is possible the previous owner may have smoked... Please share you thoughts and ideas on my FT-101E. Thank you!

Wire on MOX-PTT-VOX switch? 2
Hello again group, While servicing the Phones jack on my FT-101EE, I noticed a loose wire in the same vicinity. I don't know if this wire has been loose or if it broke loose when removing the phone jack. It is a GREY/WHITE wire and one end of it is connected to the lower lug of the MOX-PTT-VOX switch. I am looking to where the other [loose] end connects to. Any help appreciated... Mike KD7VRG Tucson, AZ

HF autotuner 3
Hi group, Do any of you have suggestions for (or have for sale) a relatively inexpensive HF autotuner I can use with my FT-101EX? Don't need any bells and whistles, just something that might work with my non-resonant dipole. Thanks for any input, Richard

Are there any shops that still work on/specialize in Yaesu FT-101E repair/restoration, and/or instructional videos? 5
My title kinda says it all: Are there any shops that still work on/specialize in Yaesu FT-101E repair/restoration? I purchased a Yaesu FT-101E with a FL-2100 yesterday for $200. The radio appears to work on all bands. I do not know much at all about this world famous radio. And I am not even sure how to work the FL-2100. Are their any good instructional videos? Thank you, AJ6XW

FT-101E signal level at RF out RCA jack
When connecting an RF probe to the driver RF out RCA jack in the rear of the FT-101E, does anyone know what voltage should be present? I was wondering what signal level the finals are expecting to receive from the driver. And can monitoring this level be used to peak the xmit trimmers without the final heaters on or is power out from the finals the best way? Thanks, Richard kn7sfz

FT-101E mica hv caps
Hello all, I have an ft-101e that I have recapped all the electrolytics and it now receives ok. The finals are rca 6js6c's. The tubes have been checked and are good but I want to know about the brown square caps in the hv tube section. I've read that its important to change them before turning on the heater switch or doing any alignment. Looking at the manual it shows c13,c104,c125,c11 and c23 from the main chassis parts list. Should all these be replaced? What caps are you guys using for replacements? Does anyone have a digi-key parts list for the correct caps? Thanks, de gregr/ka9vdu

Where to start? 4
Hi, I bought an FT-101E "for parts or repair" on ebay. It's not here yet, but I need to start collecting data, manuals, etc. I bought an FGR-7 a few years ago which I completely realigned and corrected the fine tune, but did not do a recap. I've got a very well equipped lab and enough experience to not be concerned about anything other than availability of parts and data. I also have a TS-520 to pick up at the PO tomorrow. So I have a pair of late 70's hybrid analog radios to recondition. Thanks, Reg

42 years for a dry joint from manufacturing to cause a problem! 4
Well, we all know that dry joints are caused by the joint not being heated enough when the joint is being formed. However, this one took 42 years to cause trouble! From the serial number, my FT-101ZD was manufactured in 1981. Last week, I noticed that it was low on receive on 10m, but seemed perfectly fine on the lower bands. I came here and had a read about causes for the rig being deaf. Checked the ATT switch and cleaned it with switch cleaner, checked the continuity of the fuse bulb and checked that I was getting S9+10db on 14.2MHz from the calibration oscillator. All checked out fine. I didn't think that it would be any of them anyway as the rig seemed to work perfectly OK on other bands. I was then looking for something specifically related to 10m, but in the end, that wasn't the case. I connected the antenna to the RX output and the sensitivity was fine, so I started looking for issues with the components near to SO239. Sure enough a dry joint was found where the inductor from the SO239 connected to the tx/rx relay nearby. A quick resoldering of this joint and my 42 year old rig was back to her former self in terms of sensitivity. I spent most of my working life in electronics, so I have seen plenty of crystaline "dry" joints in my time, but I've never known one to take such a long time before it actually caused an issue. When I looked under the sleeve (circled in the photo), the end of the inductor went through the relay terminal and was dangling loose in mid air with an obvious dry joint on the end of it. Why it only caused issues on 10m is a bit of a mystery, 12m was OK, 15m was fine too, although I guess that on lower bands the actual receive voltage from the antenna will be greater, so that may well be why. Seems a bit odd though. Anyone can beat this record time for a dry joint to cause issues? ;-) 73 de Gordon G8WWD

FT-101 deaf above 40m 16
Hi all, new to the group. I’m about to receive a poorly 101 (original) tomorrow which I have been advised only works on 80/40m. It’s deaf on anything above those bands. Does it sound like a dirty band switch?? Or alignment more likely the issue? I’ll know more when I receive it, but just wanted a bit of a head start incase there are obvious known faults that cause this issue with this radio. Many thanks Carl M0CLS.
