Hello my name is Rick new to this group ,I got a FRG-7 from Danny in Quebec that looks and works like new ,I found a website that shows you how to find out when the set was made ,my ser. # is 6M081728 so from
?what I found out the set was made in November of 1976 ,I opened up the set to look at the chassis and found out that the big electrolytic caps were a very light blue colour and made by Rubycon and the smaller electrolytic
?caps were a grey colour and made by Elaina ,I had read that some say to change the caps because of their age and some say if they work and look fine just leave them alone ,anyway i just wanted to know if any of the members
?would know that because ?the bigger caps are of a different brand than the smaller caps could it be that some of the caps have been change in it,s life ,I really don,t want to change all the caps in this unit it looks too tight
in there for me ,I would have thought that Yaesu Musen used all the same brand caps in the set that they built ,any thoughts on this ,thanks for your time all the very best Rick

S & S Engineering Digital Readouts
I previously added some information about the S & S Engineering Digital Readouts to the Files Section "FRG-7 with non GAR-7 Digital Readouts" folder. There is presently an eBay seller with four of these unbuilt kits for sale at $40 each delivered. eBay # 372956780739. The only problem is that they don't come with cases.
I mention the case size in the files section. Alternatively the LED section could go in the existing dial window and the circuit board elsewhere in the FRG-7.
I have no relation to the seller.

Hi, Page 51 of the FT-757GX service manual lists two pilot lights. One for the VFO and the other for the meter. don't know if there is a forum for the FT 757, so will give this forum a try.
Question. Does anyone know if the FT-757GX II have a back ground light for the S meter?? Since my unit has none I'm wondering if I should take it apart to find a burned out bulb or some such.

Yeah wouldn’t it be great to have all the promised content. So hard to find info for equipment that predates the internet Yet there must be radio fans out there sitting on a goldmine of printed materials that would be awesome to preserve for posterity.

FRG-7 main Tuning Drum issues.
I recently added several FRG 7s to my receiver collection and while both are fairly minty cosmetically one of the units has an issue with the main KHZ tuning drum. It seems to hit the limits before reaching the end of the scale. So for example tuning down towards 0 you might hit a Soft stop at about 50khz but can continue to tune down with resistance to 0. Then if you reverse and tune up to 1000khz you meet resistance at about 900 but can continue to tune until you reach a full stop. So it’s like the stops are see-sawing back and forth as you tune from end to end. I believe there is some sort of rotating stop system being used but have no info on how to set it up. The rig I have?that works normally has sufficient overtravel on both ends of the scale before hitting hard stops..

I added a files folder for non-GAR-7 displays. Added some pictures of other displays. Several YouTube video addresses also added. I did find a 7 digit display that will work on the FRG-7. The Electronic Specialties DD-103 (manual added in new displays folder). It can have 32 bands on it's band switch so would easily cover all the FRG-7 bands. Due to it's programming ability it can correct for the 1 MHz synthesizer crystal not being exactly on frequency. It uses the VFO frequency only. A bit expensive but the manual lists about a hundred other radios it will work on including the Yaesu FR-101S. He usually sells on eBay but also has a website. Presently a months delay while he waits for cases to come in. It has an auto program mode for the FRG-7 that would get it working quickly. For maximum accuracy you would need at least crystal calibrator or marker generator to accurately program/calibrate the DD-103 to your FRG-7. I see a couple on eBay in the $20 range.

Take a look at eBay item numbers 121536911607, 381698446335, 264731791631 & 172709026592. All for less than $20. The Drake List guys have been happy with the blue version used with the R-4 series receivers. Just tape over the two left most digits and mount in a case that only shows the right 4 digits. The one with 5 digits would only need one taped over. The SpeedPak shipping is less than 2 weeks (pre Covid) to the USA.
I found a few other displays that I will upload to the files section tomorrow.

I can't find my GAR-7 manual but the VFO signal is present after the VFO buffer transistor Q404 at TP404. I would pick up the signal there using a .001 uf cap in series with a 470 ohm resistor. Use RG174u coax to a new RCA jack on the rear panel.

Welcome to the group. I have one of the Gilfer Associates GAR-7 digital displays. I put a new folder in the Files section with some GAR-7 pictures, from eBay, in it. The picture of the rear of the FRG-7 shows the missing red label that has fallen off your FRG-7.
The counters were not actually made by Gilfer. They were made by e-tek. Their main claim to fame are the FR-4 digital displays for the Drake R-4 series of receivers. I have added a picture to the new GAR-7 folder.
The GAR-7 is a simple offset counter. It counts the VFO frequency of 2.445 - 3.445 MHz and subtracts the IF frequency of .455 MHz. This indicates 2.0000 to 3.0000 Mhz on the display. Because the GAR-7 only shows the last 4 digits you see 000.0 to 999.9 on the display. The accuracy is dependent on the FRG-7's 1 MHz crystal. I don't see a trimmer for zeroing the 1 MHz crystal, in the schematic, but someone may have addressed this problem in the old messages section.
A number of suitable 4 digit offset counters have been offered over the years. Probably the smallest with four 1/2" red LED's is the S & S Engineering PC1. It measures 5 1/2 by 4 by 2 1`/2 inches and has DIP switches for setting the offset required. S & S is gone but they go for a song on eBay. I'll try to find a picture for the Gilfer folder.

Counter plug on rear of my FRG-7
Hello FRG-7 users, i have one heading my way and on the rear there is a port simply labeled "counter".....According to the prior owner, he said "? Gilfer Shortwave and Electronic Equipment Bank were big shortwave radio stores back in the day and they did mods to Frog 7s to take a digital counter." The thing is I cant find much information out there on what kind of digital counter it could take and if its something others here have seen.

Thanks, I have a good basic technical background. Given what's going on with the set, I believe there is something up with the local oscillator.
I bought a working second radio. I will keep the first as a parts set. There are no "magic bullets" to get one of these up and running again. But do appreciate the suggestions.

Hi Arthur. If you are not particularly technical savvy,, I would suggest you find someone local who may be able to assist. When I recieved mine, the Mhz lock light? only operated on the higher bands. The manual is to be found on the net for download. Refer to this for the alignment procedure. The nature of the circuit means that there are some adjustments that will affect the correct operation of the Mhz lock circuitry. In my case, it meant adjusting the setting of the level pot VR102 (page 12).
HOWEVER .. just do not twiddle this and hope for the best if you are not familiar with the operation of the receiver. You could mark the position of the pot? where it is, only then move it back and forth a few times before returning it to the marked position and see what happens. In my case, it was dirty tracks on the pot (similar to a noisy volume control). Worth a try. Also, as part of the alignment procedure, there are a couple of other? adjustments which can affect the operation of that circuitry. Again, in any case, ask around at your local radio club or some place that may be able to point you toward some assistance. These receivers are fun to use and seem pretty robust.
