YD8008 with YD6940 and Kato Unitrack turnouts

grahammjmason All Messages By This Member #4753 I'm having problems with the reliability when using this combination with iTrain. They occur mostly in automatic mode but do also? when manually operating individual turnouts or when using the track route button in iTrain. ? The issues mostly occur with the double crossover (KTO20210) where occasionally it fails to operate.? I'm using two of these and the same problem occurs with both. The pulse time in the YD8008 is set to 300ms for the ordinary turnouts and 650ms for the double crossovers.? I've increased the pulse times gradually in an effort to improve the situation.? Most ordinary turnouts work okay.? I'm currently using three YD8008s all with YD6940s.? I'm using a 12 volt dc 3 amp power supply. ? Is there a recommended pulse time for Kato Unitrack turnouts in order to get the optimum from the switching process? ? I'm using the default settings in iTrain of 250ms for the activation time. ? In simulation mode and in live mode iTrain behaves as expected ie all turnouts operate on the switchboard.? So I can see when routes are set that the turnouts have changed on the switchboard but have not moved on the physical layout.? Also the problems seem to occur some way into an operating session, so they are nearly always okay for the first few train movements. ? The common use for the YD8008 is power hungry solenoids such as the Peco/Seep style that need a real thump of current to move. The Kato items I have dealt with work reliably with a much lower power requirement. ? With the YD8008 being a CDU there can be a delay in the capacitors charging up (time varies on the power supply) and this may be why you are having challenges. Personally, I would have thought that the YD8116 would work perfectly for your turnouts. ? grahammjmason All Messages By This Member #4755 Iain ? I took my advice from the YaMoRC website.? It clearly states that for Kato points you need to use the YD8008 with the YD6940 to convert to 2 wire from 3 wire.? I had originally thought about the YD8116 but the website says that it's not suitable for solenoids. Although the Kato is a solenoid I agree is nothing like the heavy duty ones you refer to. ? There lies your problem, our experience is, that the Kato's connected to the YD8008/6940 combo need 15V PSU of about 400mA minimum. Reason: Both YD8008 (1.2V) and YD6940 (0.7) introduce a voltage drop. So effectively your Kato's only receive 10.1 Volts. That's not enough. grahammjmason All Messages By This Member #4758 Karst ? Thanks for this advice I'll upgrade my PSU. ? Before reading your post I'd actually come to a similar conclusion that it was a power supply issue. I was originally powering two YD8116s together with the three YD8008 from the 12 volt power supply. I moved one of YD8116s (which was controlling relays) to another supply and everything worked as it should do with no missed turnout switching. I was even able to reduce the pulse times down to the defaults of 30ms. ? Regards ? Graham
James Braxton All Messages By This Member #4777 I have a Kato double crossover T-Trak module with I use a 9 volt battery to run it with a dpdt monetary switch. what you might want to try is powder graphite into the switch it self to help over come so friction.?
