Detailed setup manual for the YD7010?

Rick Norell

Hello, I am considering the YD7010 for my model railroad.? Setup should reasonably straightforward as I have no legacy DCC equipment and will only make three connections to the YD7010 (main track, programming track, and LAN).

I have read the quick start manual.? Hopefully, there is a more detailed product manual, particularly in regards to setting up the wifi access point and the need for a full time computer connected to the LAN.? Is there a more detailed manual somewhere or is the release relatively recent and one is in the works?

Thanks, Rick

Why do you need a computer attached all the time? You can plug in any one of goodness knows how many different throttles into the YD7001/YD7010

Many Thanks

Iain Morrison

Yes an no ;)?

Here is the German version:

I just used Google Chrome to translate it. My knowledge of German is about nil, however the translation was very very reasonable and perfectly understandable?

If someone does the conversion to English and sends me a PDF copy. I will put it in the YaMoRC files area of the forum
?
I got a 95% conversion and needed some editing to fix.

Iain, I do not know if a computer needs to be connected for set up only or for set up and operations.? That's why I wanted to see and review the complete manual to answer this and other questions.? I'm a DCC beginner and have never set up a DCC system with wifi.??
Best,
Rick

Karst,
?
Thank you for the link to the preliminary manual in German.? Google translated it for me.? I have given it a quick review.? Ryan from Iron Planet indicated that he will develop some videos to assist in getting started with the YD7010.? ?I will have time to further digest the manual in preparation for his videos.? Also, gives me time to search and attempt to understand new terminology.? I am a beginner with a capital B!? :-)?
?
I wish a complete and rapid recovery for your manual writer!? No fun to be hospitalized.
?
Best,
Rick

Why would you need a computer attached? Since the YD7010 has WiThrottle server built in, in addition to Z21, LocoNet, XPressNet, etc, it can do a lot more without a PC running than other systems that depend on a PC for WiThrottle.

Alex, the start up manual has the user first install power then connect a computer to the LAN on the YD7010.? They do not explain if the computer connection is for initial setup or initial setup and operations.? ?(shrug).? I'm a beginner and didn't know.

If you want your locomotive roster from JMRI served up to EngineDriver (among other things) then you need some sort of computer.
I use a Raspberry Pi connected via LAN. I don't use the YD wifi. This way I have two WiThrottle addresses, my home wifi for me and the RPi for guests.
Also, if you want to run a dispatcher panel for ops sessions, a computer is kind of handy.
So, use case dependent.

Bob Gamble

Could you please point out where this phrase is ? Because the way you write it, it is of no use ;)?
?

?
?
In one of the upcoming release we will provide a Roster functionality in the YD9401 ? But don' ask me when, since I do not know yet ?

Karst,
?
Quick Start Manual
?
Top of Page 12 states: Connect the YD7010 to the power supply unit and the PC via USB?
?
My error, I stated LAN instead of USB.
The connection to the PC lead me to believe it is used for the configuration process and perhaps more.? Why is the connection made to the PC?? Explaining why in the manual adds clarity and avoids confusion.
?
Thank you,
Rick

Bob, thank you for your reply!? I am a beginner and slowly climbing the JMRI learning curve.? I would like to use cell phone throttles initially and try both z21 and engine driver.? I don't have an extensive locomotive roster but clearly would like to avoid making locomotive entries into decoder pro, z21, and/or YD7010 if at all possible.
?
Karst and others, can anyone tell me the level of duplication for roster entries in z21, JMRI, and YD7010??
?
Thank you!
Rick

You will need to buy a licence for the Z21 app.

Many Thanks

Any word on a setup manual for YD7010 or quick start guide?? They had been shared earlier but were incomplete due to your writer being hospitalized.

Hi,

it's there, but still only in German:

Rick Norell

Karst, thank you for the latest manual!? If I purchase, I will be a very basic user.? I have no legacy dcc equipment to consider.? I want walk around locomotive control using wifi and basic DCC? functions (stop, go, forward, reverse, consisting, and sound).? Turnouts are manual control with ground throws.? Should be easy with your system!? A quick start writeup would be fabulous with detailed explanations for novices like me!
?
Going through the manual, I believe I would need to make entries in the following sections:

? ? Lan? Basic settings??? (specify DHCP)

? ? ES link settings? ?NA, no modules

? ? Loconet sections? ?NA, no digitrax components

? ??Track out DCC properties track? (turn off railcom, accept defaults for remaining entries)

? ? Track out DCC properties locomotives (highest short address 99, speed levels ALL)

? ? Track out DCC slots NA no loconet

? ? Track out DCC switches?? NA? (use manual switches)

? ? XBus/RBus settings? NA

? ? BBus properties?? accept defaults???

? ? RB-Bus settings? NA??

? ? Program track CV programming? (both program track and POM, program decoders)

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? redundant to program decoders on JMRI, Z21 and YD7010??

? ? Program track test drives (displayed on cell phone, commercial throttles?)

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?dispatch only used for certain hand held controllers or all?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?which hand hold controllers do not have direct selection of locos?

? ?Program track settings? ? ? ?use defaults?? what do users say?? 750mA seems too high

? ?Wifi basic settings? ?use defaults

? ?Wifi expert settings? ????? unsure if a novice should make entries here
? ?USB update? ? use defaults?
? ?Track go/stop control? ? ?connection via home network, enter IP of my router, language english, no control panel
? ?Track go/stop settings? ? use default settings, should I care about loconet slots?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??
? ?Infrared properties? ? ? NA
?
Did I select the right items for entry and appropriate values?
Any documentation on how to access Z21 and JMRI through the YD7010?
?
Thank you!
Rick

JMRI does do the actual programming, it only provides a pictorial and textual human interface to your command station. The command station - in your case a YD7010 still does the actual programming and control.

Many Thanks

Novice here.? So programming the decoder with DecoderPro totally completes the job?? I would not need to go through decoder programing in YD7010 or in the Z21 app?? If so, eliminates redundant entry and eases decoder programming for the more complex ESU sound decoders.? Thank you!

Rick,

Why would you need to program using a throttle or Z21 app if you have DecoderPro? The key to understanding JMRI is that if you're using POM, JMRI is storing the changes in the roster file, so if you go and change something with a throttle, JMRI doesn't know you changed it, and you'd have to read the locomotive back in on the programming track. So better to just use JMRI and let it keep track of changes.

I'd suggest that you get a book about DCC and learn the basics of DCC, decoders, CVs, parts of the?system, how data flows through the system, etc.

Alex
