#2020DATES approved for YCSP AND Memorial Day no-frills URGENT RESPONSE NEEDED ASAP FROM ALL!
#2020DATES
Hello everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season, seeing friends and family. I do have news, and an important request for responses--ASAP---to the ONE QUESTION BELOW, or we may have a problem. First, I finally got a commitment from the state parks that TWO sets of dates have been approved, one for the Wednesday-Sunday September 15-20 York County Star Party, and.... a no-frills star party for Memorial Day weekend, Friday-Monday, May 22-25. However, I am still negotiating terms with the supervisors involved. The two persons involved have no experience with star parties, and were not part of the local team that was present for last year's event. Their job is to be the best stewards of park lands entrusted to them, and I can appreciate the seriousness of their position. Their employee, Bob, that WAS witness to our event, and supported the use of some of vehicles , has retired, and the previous supervisors have moved on to other posts. The terms put to me were that NO vehicles would be allowed on the ballfield. This negotiation is a work in progress. I may be speaking to the top supervisors tomorrow, or after the holidays, or both. I am going to ask everyone to respond to the following questions by email to me, at: philderosa1@... I need your responses ASAP from as many as possible to negotiate, whether or not you plan to attend this year, so here is the one question with choices. Please don't panic! You may reply by simply responding as completely as possible, for example only: A0 B20 C30 D 98 (A0 means zero percent) THE QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE % LIKELIHOOD OF YOU ATTENDING THE PARTY IF: A. you are required to use the official campgrounds in the trees at the north end of the parking lot, and could leave equipment on the field overnight (I've already told them the party won't happen here) B. TENTS and SCOPES will be allowed on the field, vehicles are not allowed on the field, and you are required to carry all camping and astro gear to the ballfield C. TENTS and SCOPES will be allowed on the field, but vehicles will be allowed only for unloading and loading, but required to park in the parking lot near the bathrooms (this MAY be an option if we can't fit enough people on the observing field for a SMALL TO MID-SIZE party. I don't know what that number is yet.) D. SAME AS LAST YEAR: You can park next to your tent, and ONLY RVs and other heavy or 2-axle campers or trailers are required to park on the parking lot. AGAIN, PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL ADDRESS ASAP: philderosa1@... Thanks everybody for your speedy responses! Phil |
Phil, ?My wife and I have attended 3 out of 4 York Star Parties and we plan to attend the September Party and maybe even the Memorial Party. We have the RV so we will be parking in the parking lot like last year, no matter what is decided.? My guess is D will have the greatest response of attending as I believe most people where happy with the arrangements. Then I assume C would have a higher percentage as most astronomers are older and don't want to be carrying their equipment. A and B would have the lowest percentage for the reason I just gave for C. Also with A if the horses are there again they would be riding in the middle of the observing field. Like I said we plan on attending the Star party, the only thing that would keep us is if RV's were not allowed at all or if dogs were not allowed.? Kevin and Cindy Van Horn ? 开云体育Hi PhilI’ve been to 3 YCSP over the years and unfortunately I missed last years. But I’m likely to attend in the future - assuming this destination - only if D is the option - i.e., D100. I don’t want to lug my equipment in and out of the field and I would want my vehicle very close by to evacuate into for a drier and more comfortable slumber in the event of a downpour or deluge - as seems to happen all too often during the night on these SPs. Thanks for your continued and sustained effort to make this SP succeed. Roger

Phil I could not make it earlier this year due to back injury but I am looking forward to both events of 2020. However I may not attend if I can not park my car next to the tent and telescope. I can not carry all the equipment over a distance. So options are as follows.? A - 0% B - 0% C - 0% D - 100% Thanks Prasad

开云体育AT this point, I don't have any conflict.? I expect to attend
(both). A97 ?? B98 ?? C99??? D99 A??? My "astro" equipment is small, I could deal with it.? Would
I be able to park/drive to my tent? B??? Would require me to plan on how I am going to move my
"stuff"...? I could do it.? I might have a heart attack, trying.?
C??? I expect to use my vehicle as storage, too.? I would need to
make trips to the vehicle as needed.? I don't see a problem.? D??? All good... steve shearer; Delaware

Guys
I want to explain here the reason why I answered A0, B0, C0 and D100 though I may still go there (with lower level of enthusiasm).? Option A, B and C do not allow vehicles to be parked on the field close to the observing spot and our telescopes. That makes it necessary to drag everything over distance or something like that separates us from our car. What is I want something that I left in the car? Do I really have to walk in the dark to the car?? So, in my view,? it is essential to let the PA State Park people know that that is not a good or acceptable option. By selecting A as an acceptable option (i.e., any figure higher than 0%) PA State Park can force Phil to accept one of these A B or C options. Therefore the message to PA State Parks should be "only option D is OK or else star party will not be popular".? Prasad ? |

C25, D75. I use a 12' Leonard utility trailer, 1 axle (converted to a 1 man camper). I am non visual, 100% imager with 2 cameras on 2 EQ mounts and operate from inside my trailer remotely via 2 computers. I have need of electric power. There are 6 large (group 27) deep cycle batteries with 3 chargers in the trailer. I can operate off battery only but 110AC makes it easier. For multi nights, I need to recharge the batteries no matter what. Too big a task to haul six 70lb batteries anywhere to recharge. Also have on board the trailer a Honda 2KW "quiet" generator that I use at other sites. It's 300 miles from my home (Chesapeake, Va.) to York county, Pa. so 3 days is just barely worth the trip, but I'm interested!
I just ran across this SP on line and assume it's just starting up. A very good example of a really nice SP is Staunton River SP near South Boston, Va. in the Staunton River State Park. The big attraction there is 110AC on the field, plus it's 2 SPs a year for 6 days each and the dates there don't interfere with YCSP dates. Maybe worth looking in to for guide lines. Stu |
开云体育Hello Stu!? Thanks for asking!? I have to be really quick now, on the way out the door, but this is important enough to several people to answer quickly now…. 1.There is some electric available for recharging, at least at the pavilion.? I will try to scout out other usable locations on the property to give a more complete answer. 2.? how heavy your trailer is makes a big difference.? I am working out details with the Parks Dept now, and there are concerns with damage to the play field.? Last year we have 4 or 5 days of rain before and during the party (it figures) but the ground was amazing hard pack with absolutely no damage.? If the weight limit permits only the lot for RVs, many are using generators, the horizon is as good in most respects, better to due south, than the main observing field.? Last year I had? only 3 months to get that party going.? I am in the process of working to update the websites and complete all details working with the PA Parks department, which are great people trying to help get this party off the ground without having any issues with an unknown event.? I plan to start publicizing in a couple of weeks, and both fields, while amazing for this area, are not huge. ?If not this year, I am expecting to need to limit party size in the near future to keep the grounds pristine for both our sake and to keep the support of the Parks Dept. Please stay tuned!? Once registration opens, I will be able to see how great a response might be.? I expect to be outlining camping sites in order to allow the largest ?amount of good horizon we can get. Phil ? ? From: YCSP@groups.io <YCSP@groups.io> On Behalf Of Stu Beaber ? C25, D75. YCSP is not a newly started SP. It has been around for many years now, though this location -Susquehannock State Park is just one year old to YCSP. It was previously known by name MDSP and the name was changed to YCSP about five years ago.?? Prasad AB3EH

Thanks for the info Prasad...I seem to remember a SP in the Maryland area from years back. I glanced over the membership of the YCSP group and recognized a few names that I knew that lived in that area or had attended that SP...Maybe it's the same one... 73's, Stu On Sun, Jan 12, 2020 at 11:50 AM Prasad Agrahar via Groups.Io <ad_prasad=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

Was it Mason Dixon SP? MDSP was the original name and it was never in Maryland. Original location was Shreveport North Airport near Kralltown Rd Wellsville in?York County. That spot ended when the owner of the airstrip passed about 5 years ago. This new spot was located in 2019 and seems to be excellent. Bortle Class 4 or better. Next best after Cherry Springs State Park Welcome to the group, you will like it.? Prasad

No...I don't remember? the name of the SP but best I remember it was at a state park in Maryland. We (in the Chesapeake area) lost a long standing SP last year when the campgrounds (where it was held) ownership changed hands. Whether or not it will be returning is questionable as of now, so I'm "on the hunt" for another SP and this fits in perfectly (time wise) with the SRSP Stu On Sun, Jan 12, 2020 at 12:17 PM Prasad Agrahar via Groups.Io <ad_prasad=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

开云体育Hi Stu, Good to hear from you. ?Dee & I attended this SP last August – it used to be the Mason Dixon SP, and is the closest one for us. ?It's now at a nice little state park, but the main road to the camping area and river overlook goes past the main observing field (baseball field) and parking lot (by the rest rooms, where heavy rigs like mine camp), so there could be a few headlights going by. ?I got SQM-L readings between 20.55 and 20.75, but light domes are surprisingly low (below the trees) especially given the proximity to cities. ?Also, we looked for available electrical outlets on the restroom building – didn't find any. ?We're currently planning to attend again, both dates, so hope to see you there. Hi Roy...good to hear from you again...Hope you and Dee are doing fine...sounds so. Still using that beautiful "monster" scope I bet. I'm still imaging as always and trying to fill the void that losing the ECSP created. The YCSP is just about at the limit of how far I want to travel pulling the trailer. Hope I can make it this year and more. The James River SP is just getting it's feet wet too. They're in Buckingham county in Va. I was all hooked to the trailer and packed to go there last fall but a tornado wiped out their power the night before the SP was due to start...bummer!
