Hi Geo,
You don't need a high vacuum so a small, 12VDC pump would probably be sufficient
and eliminate 70 to 80% of the ambient air.
Plus if you incorporate two or more pump down cycles with a dry N2 purge in between
you are definately home free. Dry N2 is available in the small cylinders that are treated like
recycle material; i.e., just return the empty when you get a new one. At 2000 psi you will
also need a regulator,of course but The N2 should last a long time.

Subject: Re: [XRF] Gas Purge vs Vacuum
This one is another gas purge experiment, this time instead of a hydrocarbon, it's a N+O mixture. More aimed at eliminating the Ar peak ~3 keV with simple equipment.
Two scans of sub gram chunk of Yb metal, the white one is with the gas applied, and the red outline one is the normal one with no gas purge.Even with this rather common mixture the ~3 keV peak has all but disappeared. Right now I'm still working with gas purge because a vacuum system in the field would be difficult and inconvenient. Helium will no doubt be the safest, most effective but costly solution. This present experiment is a measureable improvement and not costly at all. Geo
