X-Air Ultralight Aircraft Re: BRS in X'air F

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello John, is after an engine mount for a standard X-Air not the H model but it is good to know that you have one for the H model anyway. Do you have the modified engine cowls to suit ?

Hi Jon,

In Australia my X-Air MTOW is 490kg my aircraft empty weight is 260kg

I actually purchased a 912 I wanted to install in it rather than the 582... not sure yet as it seems hard to get a 912 engine mount grrr

with a chute added I know the weight here can be more,?

the ones I seen have a mount to clamp the external bullet looking chute to the main boom then has the straps bolted to the frame... I'm sure a google search will find some extra info but if not look at the assembly manual as it shows the BRS mounting :)?

I would be very keen to see some close up pictures of your 912 mounting

a mate of mine just purchased a X-Air with a jabiru 2200 and a BRS fitted.. I will get a pic or two and show you his one, I dont think you will need to bother covering the fuel tanks as the rock et is above and outside the aircraft frame..

cheers Pete?

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Interestingly the system used in Australia is quite different to that in Europe. After a bit of research I found an image on the German X¡¯air agent? which shows their system? housed internally:-

I think that system is available from the factory in France so I am currently making enquiries in that direction.

Thats only the rocket, not the complete chute. It's pointing STRAIGHT at the fuel tanks ????? Something i dont understand. The idea with the system we use is the distance from the fuel tanks is more than 1 meter and no chance of an accident.? There are several ways to mount the chute but the way we use puts it right on the cofg of the aircraft. In the back like shown on your photo would need a lot of weight up front.

Yes, I can see advantages and disadvantages in both systems. The idea of detonating a rocket a few cm from a plastic fuel tank is something that doesn't appeal. I believe the theory is that the rocket exhaust is contained within the tube while it is within the airframe, however I can imagine if there is any vapour at all things will end badly.

?

re C of G , they don't show where the chute goes, its probably packed in a fabric holder and it may well be mounted between the wings thus balancing the Cof G with the rocket.

?

There is also quite a bit of scope for C of G adjustment as currently the battery is mounted in the tail as far back as it will go. If I needed to tip the C of G forward I can simply move the battery along the fuse tube or perhaps replace it with a lithium one.

?

The rocket exhaust problem is not so easily solved. Perhaps some sort of fire blanket or at least a metal deflector. Perhaps the trisk is lower than it looks as there are many aircraft with similar installations and so far despite many deployments nobody has ignited a fuel tank.

I recall working on fitting the battery in the xair F tail and getting it load tested and approved in UK. It was the only way we could achieve the C of G when fitting a heavier Verner or Rotax 912. The down side was the length, diameter and weight of battery cables required to reduce the voltage drop on starting the current hungry Verner. Take note when doing C&G calculations.
If you need to bring battery forward the I'm sure I still have some keel tube battery boxes in my roof space. ( saddle bag style)
