What hardware is needed for RTTY/data with X5105?

In the 24 years of being a Ham, I have never operated on RTTY/data/digital modes. I¡¯m just wondering what I would need as far as hardware to make to connection between the X5105 and a computer. Also wondering if what I already have is enough, or do I need additional hardware/connectors??

thanks!!

If your computer has separate MIC and PHONES jacks, you have enough parts.
My new laptop has a combined jack, called TRRS (tip-ring-ring-sleeve), so I have to connect two of the TRS audio cables to one TRRS plug (which is not included with the radio).

Ok, well I¡¯m glad I asked bow because I¡¯m looking to buy a windows laptop just for ham radio. I have the latest MacBook Pro, but everything ham seems to be a pain moth Mac and drivers.?

so, I¡¯ll look to see if their is a windows laptop that has both a mic jack and a phone jack.?

thanks again Doug!

I also use an inexpensive USB sound card dongle with separate mic in & headphone out TRS sockets with a Y TRRS plug for input? to 2 TRS output plugs for mic & headphone.? My X5105 is 'happy' with this combination.? Good luck!! You'll probably need to adjust - fiddle with - the mic & headphone levels in your computer's sound control settings, too.

Edited

A USB dongle is the better choice in my experience. The cheap ones work fine. The more expensive one from XGGCOMMS is better in my experience. By better I mean signal reception is better. Here is the thread where I discussed them.

That's the way I run FT8, too, with external USB sound card.? But I'm using an Icom IC-706MkII radio.? My first try at setting up the X5105 for FT8 was with the external sound card, too.? For portability convenience, the 'direct connection' might be better.? But for flexibility, the USB dongle is great.? And I've read somewhere else about guys hearing Windows sounds and announcements on the FT8 frequencies because the Windows sounds and alerts weren't turned off, and got sent out along with the FT8 tones.

If your PC or tablet has the single audio jack (TRRS) you can get a USB sound card with the same connector and use just one audio cable instead of two.? There would still need to be the "Y" adapter at the CE-17 end of the audio cable, though.? There is another thread in this group, with pictures of one member's setup with the TRRS cables.? He bought an 8-pin mini-DIN cable for getting the audio signals direct from the radio and didn't use the CE-17 interface.? I am also pursuing that method and have made up the adapters and tested it.

At the top of each page, there's a "search" box.? To its left, there's a button marked "Topics."? Click the 'topics' button to see the list of all topics in the group, then click "Search" and look for terms like 'mini-din' or 'TRRS'? or 'usb dongle'.? Some great day we'll work up nice, well organized tutorials for subjects like this and post them in the group's WIKI or FILES areas.? I hope!

I second that there are some great posts in the

In Feb I posted a schematic for a cable I created last Fall here:

/g/X5105-Users

Then, click on Files

What I learned today that I didn¡¯t know before is that we can view all of the emailed photos in one spot

Under Main -> Photos.

I didn¡¯t know that was an option. Neat :-)

I never pursued using data with this rig, but now I am ready to try as I have just started playing around with FT8 on my Yaesue FT991A. I use a Mac and the data software I'm using is WSJT-x.?

so I attempted to connect my X-5105 to the Mac and run the WSJ-x software. In the config setting for rig control, there is a drop down menu to choose your rig. there are many rigs listed, including the G90, X108G, X6100, but no X5105.?

is any one using the WSJ-x with the X5105? Does the X5105 have any rig control capabilities or does it need to be done manually??
Not sure where to start but I'm going to try to connect again and see if I can play with drivers and get some signals recieved and decoded for starts.

Im using Xiegu X-108 as the rig selection with WIN 10 and EGGCOMMS interface. All functions including rig control are normal.

I have also run a USB sound card dongle but I have to run a TRRS cable from that to a now unavailable interface & homebrew connector to the non-Yaesu standard Xiegu data jack. Works fine on FT8. Haven¡¯t messed with RTTY in decades. Just doesn¡¯t feel right, not running it thru a KW7, ¡®though I¡¯m sure one of Putin¡¯s minions in N. Korea could find me a working model ;-).?

In truth, the USB dongle & accouterments has been superseded by the IC-705¡¯s little USB connector & wifi/Bl?T?nd capabilities.

Nils / W8IJN?

so the X5105 has is rig control able?

what are the interface connections you are using?

how do I set the baud rate on the X5105?

Hmmm!? The manual doesn't say.? I set my PC to 19,200 bps, 8n1 - if I remember right.
And the X5105 uses Icom's CI-V serial communication protocol.? Setting the rig as an IC-7100 works (for many people).? I don't remember why, but as you'll see, I had mine set to use OmniRig, which I set for X5105.
I'll attach a screenshot.

Using CI-V for other uses, like memory or channel management, though, does NOT work with the X5105.

Im using? X108g
19200
8-1-none
VOX
Default sound settings

Im using a XGG.COMMS Interface with no supporting program, just WSJT-X Version 2.1.1 IIRC.
No issues at all. Rig control works fine.

Set WSJT-X communications to be for an Icom IC-7100.
XIegu uses the Icom CI-V communications protocol.? But only partially!? You can control frequency, mode, TX/RX and maybe a few other things, but not memory storage or "channel" preset storage or labeling.

Yes

You cab set it up as a IC-7000 and it works no problem. You will need the CE19 interface which comes with the necessary leads.
