Description:
Singer Parts List 9w1 and 9w7. Form 1686w September 1919. The booklet is the product of multiple photocopies and is not of the best quality. It will not OCR because of the poor quality. If anyone has an original copy I would be interested in obtaining it or a high resolution scan. I am working on rebuilding the booklet with photos of actual parts instead of drawings.

Thanks Bill.? I grabbed it for upload to ISMACS.? If you do get a clean copy built I'd love to add it also.

Bill Wells

No problem. I am surprised a better copy is not available somewhere.

Bill, I started collecting not quite two years ago, purely by accident (free Singer 66 treadle on side of road).? I discovered that manuals for sewing machines is an interesting and scattered topic.? I suspect that there are lots of great copies of that document out there but they are all on somebody's computer and shared if the right person asks in the right place.? There have been companies like Relics that had huge collections but then went away when the owner died.? I have spent much of the last year grabbing everything I could and sending it to the ISMACS webmaster to be archived.? My hope is that eventually the website will be revamped and made easier to access and that it will eventually become the go-to for this type of info.? It seems to me to be a natural fit.?

Additional work may be done on ISMACS, subject to more paying members to defray costs.

Maria, I do not understand your mention of "additional work."?? I am reworking the 1919 parts list at present.? A problem is finding actual parts to photograph.? In lieu of actual parts, I am rebuilding the? images printed in the list.?? It may take some time.? In essence it is an industrial cultural archaeological effort.? I have already transcribed the text sections of the list and I am working through the plates.

Bill, I think Maria is talking about the fact that the website really needs a facelift.? I've been working with Jim the Webmaster to add manuals and update information as I've been able to find it and he's had time to do the update, but he and I both agree that the site needs a revamp.? Unfortunately some of the things we have talked about cost money and some of the things take board approval and some take a fair amount of web design knowledge.? My suggestions to Jim have been along the lines of starting over rather than trying to overlay a new design onto the old code but that takes a serious amount of commitment and possibly a professional web designer who can set it up and then leave it to a volunteer to maintain.? Again, these are all just my impressions of the site and the conversations I have had.? I have mailed off a list of proposals to the board so hopefully they will be looking them over at a future meeting and possibly adopting some in order to see those improvements go forward.

Thanks for the information.? I understand about revamping.? A word of caution about? a professional web designer.? Many use software that the average "volunteer" may not be acquainted with, including server side.? This software can cause problems down the line.? I have run into this in the past.

Good to know.? Thanks Bill.? I've not used a professional before.? I designed our veterans' group website 25 years ago and it has been maintained but never upgraded.? We were looking into a professional redesign but every one we talked to who said "oh we'll do it for free because we support veterans" never came through and none of them ever gave us a price because, well they were going to do it for free.? So finally one of our members who is taking college classes for something added a class and is learning to do it.? Hopefully that will work out.?

Hi Bill,?
I was referring to the website as a whole. Being a member here is not the same as an ISMACS (Group)? Member .There is just so much that can be done to the website without money.?

I tried, along with 2 other members here, to redo a? shuttle/bobbin document so that when you printed it, you could actually compare it ti what you had, provided you printed at 100 percent. I am no expert and I ultimately gave up. I still have the information, but have not pursued it as it needed to be done by someone with more knowledge.
Regards,?
Mari,

I will take a look at the Shuttle/Bobbin pag. What is the link to it.? In general, I convert print files to pdf.? This guarantees they will print properly.? Also, I am trying to get away from paper and go digital.

I understand.? I did the same thing.? I volunteered to maintain a veteran's website until they could find someone to take it over.? Well, eight years later I gave it up.? The person who maintains a site does not decide on site content.? This person will need direction to ensure site quality.? I could never get the organization leadership to direct the content.?? It was frustrating for me.
