Re: The sound of silence

Fit POSH mufflers from Webike a Japanese company, best to upgrade the carbs with 2 shims on the needles, a jet size up on the pilot with 2 turns out on the air mix screw, and main jet up from 118 to 125? and fit pods on the carb intakes, though you will have to re enforce the holding on the carbs and electronic holding brace, if airbox is discarded. The bike will then sound and go like a late sixties Bonneville, you will have a couple of extra horsepower and torque.?

I like the look of the original mufflers but the silence is killing me. Anyone recently removed the baffles from their bike??

Re: W650 oil consumption

I have always used Shell Rotella 15 40 with great success! More cost-effective than those fancy brands with motorcycle graphics on the bottle. It's JASO rated for wet clutches. Kawi claims you can go up to 3500 mi before changing the oil but I live in a hot climate so I never go past 3k. They also state change the filter every other change.
?
I have used Shell in my previous vintage ride and never had any issues either. Oil threads def start a flurry of responses and opinions, so this is my quick .02

Re: W650 oil consumption

Thanks, Dennis. Good advice.?

Tom - so glad to hear your cylinders aren't leaking. Good news, but of course it doesn't answer your original question.

Just FYI, the manual recommends <10W-40, 10W-50, 20W-40,or 20W-50> FWIW.

This may stir up a hornet's nest - but in my old 1981 KZ550, if I ran synthetic oil, it leaked like a sieve. Dino oil, no leaks. I actually had other KZ owners from the online forum call me a liar on that one. Seriously? Yeah, I just come over here and make s**t up,?to annoy?you.?

Idiots.

I digress.

That's no bull. Synthetic oil - leaks, dino oil, no leaks.? Obviously, a 1981 KZ550 is not a 2001 W650, but ...

Good luck.

=S

Re: Bought this a few weeks ago

Cheers. I will see if they are available here.?
I use Autosol for metal polishing which is pretty good and have started treating the rust with CRC rust converter.?
Thinking about options to tidy up the frame without dismantling it as I want to keep riding throughout summer and autumn (and winter tbh). Roads aren¡¯t salted here so assuming it is just 25 years of wear and questionable finish.?

Re: Bought this a few weeks ago

I strongly recommend ACF 50 as an effective and proven Anti-corrision protectant on all metal bits. Nothing beats SimiChrome for polishing metals. You can use diluted Simple Green and extra fine steel wool to remove some corrosion?

Re: Bought this a few weeks ago

Thanks Jeffrey
?I usually ride all year round so starting the engine every week shouldn¡¯t be too much of a problem but that is really good to know.?
This bike is a 2000 model with 44,000 kms on the clock. Runs and rides really well. It has a braided hose and after market disk on the front, new clutch and a lot of small cosmetic modifications including front and rear guards, grips and tank pads, indicators and tail light. Suspension and handling is good. Paint is okay.?
The engine and frame are not the best with plenty of corrosion.?
The plan is to do what I can to tidy it up while keeping it rideable. I am not going to restore it. I like it modified. I have owned a few Triumphs that have been similar.?

Any advice is always appreciated and welcomed.?

Re: W650 oil consumption

Hi Tom.? There are small hoses passing down behind the engine, near the swing arm pivot. 2 of them should have plugs. Pull the plugs and see how much fluid comes out. You may have overfilled the oil, if so it will pass thru the breather and into the air filter box. Those tubes are drains for the box.?

Check the engine oil off the centerstand, oil level not more than 1/2 way up the window. This has always worked for me.

For a similar aged W my leak that was difficult to identify turned out to be the main head gasket. It had perished and hardened in places. Replacing solved a similar loss of oil. I would also look behind the Final Drive cover.

Oh, yeah! I've seen stuff from Buchanan's, good stuff!

Re: Bought this a few weeks ago

If your are thinking of changing to Stainless,? or chrome spokes. I recommend Buchanan's in Azusa, CA. It's what they do.

Also, the W does not eat thru chains, tires, etc but be smooth with takeoffs and accelerations and you'll be good to go. My favorite tires are Michelin Road Classics and with like 5k mi they still look new! For chains, I like DID X-ring. Kawi recommends checking, not adjusting, ever 1600 mi and thousands more than that, with careful cleaning and lubrication the chain has barely gotten out of recommended specs. I ran with 27mm chain slack and feels good to me.

Re: W650 oil consumption

Thanks for the tip. Inspected the entire engine with a flashlight. Base of the cylinders,? and under the stater are totally free from oil.? Lots of very small rocks from my road though. In the spring I'm in Illinois...thus spring I'll switch from dinosaur 15w50 to synthetic 10w40...we'll see if that helps...thx...TM

Hi, Tom

Some Ws have developed leaks around the oil feed tubes that run through the rear of the cylinders. It can be difficult to spot as the oil collects in the well under the starter motor and does not reach the ground. I'd inspect the jugs very carefully. A dusting of talcum powder can help spot oil residue. Also fish a rag or Q-tip under the starter to see if it comes up wet.

Look at parts 31913 and A on this diagram.?

Good luck. It's a nasty fix so I hope you don't have it. Although on my 2001, I was able to staunch the flow with an oil additive as an alternative to tearing the entire engine down. It didn't stop the bleeding but it slowed it considerably.

Great, Mark!
