Re: W800

I have a 2022 w800, which has ~47hp. It's my first bike, so I have nothing to which to compare it.

I was lucky to find the petcocks rebuild kit with all the rubber parts and seals. Another thing I¡¯ve put off for a while but may need to get busy with. ?

great tips for this w660 newbie, thanks again?

Dereck, that¡¯s a great tip! ?Thanks?

15 years¡ I¡¯ve only had my w650 for a year or so. ?Still getting to know ¡®her¡¯ quirks and how to address them. ?Fortunately, the ADVrider thread on w650, this yahoo group, the British ¡®The Lonely Ones¡¯ website, and a YouTube channel or two, are great sources. ?Of course, the service manual is my main reference.?

I think I enjoy learning about the mechanics of the bike as much as riding it. ?

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

Might want to also try the poor-man's carb rebuild. Put the bike on its centerstand, then fill the bowls with Chevron Techron, straight from the bottle and let it stand overnight before draining to remove any solids the solvent loosens up.?

If memory serves (it's been many years) I used to accomplish this by pulling the fuel hose from the fuel tank (be sure the petcock is off) and fitting a small funnel in the tank end.

Another tip we learned many years ago from Wired George, the Texas Kawasaki carburetor whisperer, is to install ?a simple lawnmower inline filter in the gas line to trap large particles before they get to the carbs. Such particles are inevitable in any motorcycle, particularly those of a certain age.?

Unrelated - assuming you have the stock vacuum-actuated petcock, check your vacuum lines. Mine were very cracked and leaky making the bike sluggish and rough. I replaced them with polyester and it was as if I put a turbocharger on the thing.?

On that topic - the vacuum petcock will also become unreliable after a while. They can be rebuilt, but the definitive solution is to replace it with an old fashioned on/off cock that is less likely to fail. Of course the tradeoff is that you have to remember to shut off the gas when you stable the bike but that adds to its vintage charm IMHO.?

Not sure if they're still available, but the one I used:

yamaha 23F-24500-20-00
fits TW200 (TW200G1)

Screwed right in, no modifications needed. (Mine was an 01 650)

Good luck.

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

I did this but I¡¯m not sure it¡¯s what remedied the idle¡ perhaps! ?

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

Brake caliper is cleaned, new pistons and seals and rubber components and it works perfectly! ?Took a good ride today to heat soak the engine. ?Noticed a couple things¡ the mirrors out of position, both of them difficult to adjust on the fly. ?Choke kept idle constant until I was confident to try closing choke. ?Idle was high w/out choke but was constant. ?

once I got home, I adjusted the throttle knob to just under 1000rpm. ?Idle holds¡?
?
handlebars were too low, simple adjustment raised them a bit. ?Stock bars. ?This rotated the mirrors up enough for good rear- view. ?

as far as idle? ?Maybe a particle of rust jostled loose when the bike fell affecting idle¡ as I rode, the particle(s) cleared on their own? ?Hard to say. ?Perhaps the right side throttle cable assembly was pushed out of whack? ?I don¡¯t really know. ?But it seems ok for now.

eventually, I need to take off and clean the carbs and replace fuel lines, rebuild the petcocks and new vacuum lines..,
check/adjust valves and then sync carbs. ?

Thanks folks for your input,
?
throttle position sensor (small rectangular plastic doohickey) was not damaged. ?You¡¯re likely right, it¡¯s not the culprit.
?
Seems consensus points to a displaced needle or stuck float. ?I¡¯ll try light tapping on the carburetor sides for now. ?Hope I don¡¯t need to pull carbs off, but will if needed. ?

So much to learn! ?Fortunately, I¡¯m retired so plenty of time. ?I¡¯m in no hurry, but am looking forward to getting back on the road. ?I¡¯ll update when I know more.

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

The part you are asking about is the throttle position sensor. I¡¯m reasonably certain it only affects ignition timing. ?I¡¯d be surprised if it was the culprit, though it¡¯s not impossible. Was it damaged in the fall? If so, I¡¯d unplug it to see if that helps.?

Someone else mentioned the possibility of a float or needle getting dislodged or stuck. While it¡¯s not something I¡¯ve seen, I like that theory.?
?
Another thing I¡¯d check is exhaust temperature between the two cylinders. If you have an infrared thermometer you could try to see if one side is cooler than the other. It wouldn¡¯t give you your answer, but it would give you a direction to start looking. I imagine I wouldn¡¯t have to tell you to not put your hands on the exhaust pipes of a running bike, but if you don¡¯t have a thermometer you might be able to tell if there¡¯s a significant difference by holding your hand near the pipes.?

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

It could be that the float or float needle valve? has stuck when it fell over ? Try tapping the side of the float bowl gently with a plastic screwdriver handle , that MIGHT reset it ?
hope you get it sorted , regards Derek

Ran the bike 3 weeks ago. ?Charged battery. ?My thinking is that I may have turned the idle knob with my legs as I was trying to catch the bikes fall.

Re: Poor idle after slow drop on right side.

Since you¡¯ve been doing some work on the bike, the first thing that comes to mind is it might be unrelated. How long since the bike was running on a regular basis? If it¡¯s been a while, it might be as simple as bad gas or you might need a carb clean.?

Re: Fork oil stink

Thought I¡¯d give an update since I¡¯ve put it all back together: ?the forks look great and work great. ?I painted (gloss black) the lowers while apart and it made a ton of difference. ?

What to look out for¡ cable routing! ?I had to take it all apart again to route the cables properly. ?Photos I took just were not clear enough. ?

taking the bike off the center stand, I managed to do a very slow drop on the right side¡ fortunately, towels covered the tank and i counterbalanced the fall with my weight. ?Unfortunately, my weight is only about 170 pounds, and I ended up getting thrown, karate style, across the garage floor. ?

no damage thanks to the towels and the ¡®slow¡¯ drop. ?But¡. Now the bike doesn¡¯t want to idle properly. ?I¡¯ll post this in a new thread.

Luckily I dismantled my swinging arm at 4k. They were virtually?bone dry. As well as greasing the bearings I fitted?a grease nipple on the top centre and a grease nipple on the?foot brake shaft pivot, on the outer top.
