Re: New W650 owner
I've put Shorai Lithium Iron n batteries in both my Ws. If you are not a weekly (or even daily) rider motorcycle lesd/acid batteries are just not very durable, I've read about some of you getting very long life from your stock batteries but that has not been my experience over th years with many Bikes . The point is, if your battery neds to be replaced do yourself a favor, spend the extra money and get a Lithium-irom battery. It'll shave 5 lbs. of the weight and hold a charge for 6months at? a crack Alohapaul Here's the link for the Shorai I just bought for my 2001 or this Phantom battery is whats been in my 2000 for over 2 years From: "djguggms@... You do this by running the engine after the fuel petcock is turned off.?? I usually turn the fuel off a block from home.?? When the engine starts starving for fuel,? I know it's time to turn into my driveway. It doesn't "drain" the carbs.? It runs the engine until the carburetor jets are out of the fuel supply.?? This keeps the carbs innards dry except for the bottom of the float bowls.?? Keeping the jets and passages dry seems to work for me.?? I do this for all my bikes and have not had to rebuild the carbs on any of them. Bob

Re: New W650 owner
Les, A W650 has about the smoothest idle of any bike I've ever had or heard.? Should sound something like a Singer sewing machine at under 1,000 RPM.? Nice, smooth, with very linear throttle response all the way through the rev range.? Zero hesitation and very smooth from bottom up.? Here's a link to my first foray into the carbs back in 2011. The W has a couple unique features.? One is the clam style air box which is hard to understand until you see how it goes together.? Finding a shop manual is really the best place to start.? As you can see by the link there's a bit of work to taking off the carbs on these bikes.? Like anything, once you've done it not such a big deal.? By installing an on - off fuel petcock I'm able to run the carbs dryer so the ethanol can't work it's magic.? The only way to avoid this type of motorcycle maintenance is to have a fuel injected bike. Monty? |

Paul, Les is in Dallas. We don't have a source of
ethanol free gas anywhere near the city. If we rode to one, filled up the tank,
we'd run out by the time we got home. We are not left with any option besides
buying a tanker full of guzzoline.
?
A few hours ago I saw a vehicle that'd haul that
tanker.....you wanna get out of here? You talk to me.

Welcome, Les, great to have another W owner in the
Dallas area. I'm in Lewisville, right up at 407 and 35.
On the petcock, somebody here gave this idea long
ago, it's always worked for me: The long end is forward when it's in "On",
because you're going forward into adventure! When you hit reserve, you need to
turn the petcock so the long end points backwards, towards the last gas station
you passed.
?
I'm usually pretty darned available on the weekends
but I'm having major surgery on Thursday so I won't be available for the next
two weekends, then the first weekend in September I've been hired to do an
appearance in Oklahoma City - so all you folks who want to see the Interceptor,
it'll be in OK City on that weekend.
?
It's pretty neat that you're a Les, because I'm
pretty sure you would be our second gentleman of mature years in the Dallas area
who has had a W650.
?
Again, great to have you here,
?

Re: New W650 owner - Petcock Marking
Bob Lombardi
Excellent idea about marking the shutoff liver with a paint pen. I have done the same with my bikes as there doesn't seems to be standard for the way the lever works. I marked mine with a red Sharpie which is still on there,? but the paint is better.?? I guess a dab of dark red (or the color of your choice) nail polish will work too. I just look down for the red and I know the fuel is off. Bob

Hi y'all
Just bought an '00 W650 with 17k miles for $3,300. I think I got a good deal. There is some surface pitting and scratches on frame etc. But overall good cosmetic condition.?
It seems to run fine but before I really start riding all over I wondered if there was a checklist of things I should look out for and have corrected ASAP.?
I love how the bike handles and of course we all love how it looks. I'm looking forward to many happy miles.

Re: New W650 owner
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGet a copy of the factory service manual.Check out items and service intervals.? I might know where you can get a digital copy. If you don't know the history,? at the very least IMHO you should change the engine oil & filter. Fork oil change. Flush the front brake with new clean fluid. Check front pads and wear on the rear drum shoes. Inspect the air filters. Mine were disintegrating. Check tire tread depth. A valve adjustment might be in order. Read about the rear fender cracking problem here in the files. |
