Re: Rear tire width question
Thanks for that info Dennis.
Stock 130/80 sidewall height = 104mm 100/90 sidewall height = 90mm So with a 14mm sidewall height difference x 2 as there are two sidewalls in the diameter) the rear has 28mm or one inch taller overall sidewall height than the front tire. So the stock 100/90 19 and the stock 130/80 18 fully assembled and inflated are actually the same size. If this is true then why go to a 120/90 rear and upset the balance? --- In W650riders@..., "Dennis J. Guggemos" <djguggms@...> wrote: So, 80% of 120 is less than 80% of 130, so you get a less tall tire with a 120/80.

?
The "80" part is the percentage of the width (the 120 or 130
part). So, 80% of 120 is less than 80% of 130, so you get a less tall tire with
a 120/80.

Re: Rear tire width question
Why would a 120/80 lower the bike more than the stock 130/80? Isn't
the 120/130 designating the width only? If they're both 80s they should be the same height. As far as putting a 90 on the rear come closer to the rolling radius of the front, why not put a lower height tire on the front to come closer to the rolling radius of the rear? --- In W650riders@..., "Jonhaddock@..." <jonhaddock@...> wrote: sitting down at the rear and a 120/80 will lower the back more than the stock 130/80. radius is closer to the front tyre's. will feel wierd tipping into bends because the rear radius is so much bigger than the front's, it'll have significantly LESS grip, especially in the wet, because the LARGER contact patch will have less pressure ( weight) per square inch...And it'll look stupid, like someone fitted a big rear tyre to pretend they have a really powerful engine and never go round corners. ...:-) going for Calla custom look. Re: Rear tire width question
You should know that a wider tire than the stock 130 will slow lean over, so this isn't a performance "upgrade", it will mostly be an appearance change..and the older bikes had skinnier tires than our 130s though, so you are going to change that nostalgic look.
Sport bikes don't have fat tires to get more traction, the compound their tire is made of gives them the traction..the wider tire gives more surface area which helps dissapate heat. Sport bikes compensate for the additional weight and resistance to lean by using shorter rims, typically 17 inch rims, although 16s were popular front rim size in the 80s. A wider tire will most likely require a wider rim as well. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Re: Couple of newbie questions.
Hello Pete,
Deceleration wobble, has always happened to me (on other bikes, never the Ws) when my tires were worn, or front air pressure was incorrect. Worn steering head bearings could be the culpret as well. Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Trials riding is very challenging, I admire the skill of the people who do that, but frankly, I lack the patience to develop that skill.
Trail riding, or cow trailing may be what you call green laning, just off road riding for fun..few rules, mostly common since..like, don't jump over something unless you know what's on the otherside. The 650 dual sports (F650, DR 650 or KLR 650) are a bit much for trail riding, you want a small spunky motorcycle that you could pick up all by yourself if necessary. I have a DT 250, that's more than enough..but might be more work than you want..kick start only, and it is old and can be persnickety. I would recommend a Yamaha XT 225, Suzuki DR 200, or a Kawasaki Sherpa 250. These all have electric starts, are light and agile, and have a reasonable seat height. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
In Florida, you could get a learner's permit/restricted license actually, when you were 14 years old (I turned 14 in 1964)..this would allow you to drive a car with an adult in the car with you, or to ride a motorcycle alone (there was a restriction on HP for that motorcycle until you were 16 yrs old though..>5 HP, and you could get a regular license to drive a car when you were 16 yrs old.)
My brother had had motorcycles for years, but he was 8 years older than me and had bought his bikes, 750cc Harley Davidson KD models (the side valve predescessor to the Sportster) while he was stationed in Washington State..over 3000 miles from my Mother, who was not a motorcycle fan. I really wanted to have a motorcycle, now my brother had returned from service and he bought a Jawa 50 to ride back and forth to work. That made me want a bike even more. Problem was, my mother was afraid of them and it was going to be a hard sell. it took about a year of whinning to get permission, but in 1965 I bought my brother's Jawa, he had moved up to a Honda 305 Dream. The key factor in convincing my Mom that it was OK to have a motorcycle, was that my Dad had owned a Whizzer motorbike..Dad had a motorcycle, Georgie had a motorcycle...why can't I have a motorcycle..waa, waa, waa. The earliest indication that I might be prone to MBS was, in 1968, I owned the Jawa 50 (trail bike only by then), a Honda 50 Supersport (CA110), a Honda S90 and a Suzuki Olympian 150. I also had a 1957 Plymouth Savoy..1968 was a very good year. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR.
