I would hesitate to put a 120/80 on. These bikes
are prone to sitting down at the rear and a 120/80 will lower the back more
than the stock 130/80.
?
The tyre you want is a 120/90...slightly
taller.
?
Either tyre will improve low speed handling
because the rolling radius is closer to the front tyre's.
?
Putting a fat rear tyre on will simply bugger up
the handling. It will feel wierd tipping into bends because the rear radius is
so much bigger than the front's, it'll have significantly
LESS grip, especially in the wet, because the LARGER contact
patch will have less pressure ( weight) per square inch...And it'll look
stupid, like someone fitted a big rear tyre to pretend they have a really
powerful engine and never go round corners. ...:-)

Re: Rear tire width question

The "80" part is the percentage of the width (the 120 or 130
part). So, 80% of 120 is less than 80% of 130, so you get a less tall tire with
a 120/80.

Why would a 120/80 lower the bike more than the stock 130/80? Isn't the
120/130 designating the width only? If they're both 80s they should be the
same height. As far as putting a 90 on the rear come closer to the rolling
radius of the front, why not put a lower height tire on the front to come
closer to the rolling radius of the
rear?

I have been trying to understand it all. At a TT (circuit)
there's MotoGP which is racing on bikes of between 500cc and 800cc (?) all
over europe (or other parts of world as well).
Then there's racing on
smaller machines.
And there's WSB and so on.
What is sort of
'the' event? I don't really watch it (yet) but do the Pedrosas and the Rossis
do both? WSB and MotoGP. Suppose GP is well the GP so that must be the main
racing event then? Pfff complicated.

Re: Rear tire width question
You should know that a wider tire than the stock 130 will slow lean over, so this isn't a performance "upgrade", it will mostly be an appearance change..and the older bikes had skinnier tires than our 130s though, so you are going to change that nostalgic look. Sport bikes don't have fat tires to get more traction, the compound their tire is made of gives them the traction..the wider tire gives more surface area which helps dissapate heat. Sport bikes compensate for the additional weight and resistance to lean by using shorter rims, typically 17 inch rims, although 16s were popular front rim size in the 80s. A wider tire will most likely require a wider rim as well. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Hello Pete, Deceleration wobble, has always happened to me (on other bikes, never the Ws) when my tires were worn, or front air pressure was incorrect. Worn steering head bearings could be the culpret as well. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Hello everyone, just got my W650 a few weeks ago and a couple of issues have arisen. probably been dealt with before but who knows.
Handlebar Shake: when throttling back from 50+ or so mph, the handlebars give a wobble/shake at between 45-50mph, ok if you've got both hand on the handlebars, but if for some reason you don't, there is a noticeable shimmy until the speed drops to 40-45mph. Thought it mught have been down to a worn (very) rear tyre, but a new one has made no difference.
Momentary cough: sometimes, the engine gives a 'cough'. It alwaqys recovers instantly and then won't happen again for the rest of the ride.
Any suggestions for these issues, or are they all like it?
Thanks
Pete

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Trials riding is very challenging, I admire the skill of the people who do that, but frankly, I lack the patience to develop that skill. Trail riding, or cow trailing may be what you call green laning, just off road riding for fun..few rules, mostly common since..like, don't jump over something unless you know what's on the otherside. The 650 dual sports (F650, DR 650 or KLR 650) are a bit much for trail riding, you want a small spunky motorcycle that you could pick up all by yourself if necessary. I have a DT 250, that's more than enough..but might be more work than you want..kick start only, and it is old and can be persnickety. I would recommend a Yamaha XT 225, Suzuki DR 200, or a Kawasaki Sherpa 250. These all have electric starts, are light and agile, and have a reasonable seat height. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Trials? Is that motocross? exciting. I like the idea of riding in the woods, think it's called greenlaning. Liked riding on the grass at the rally next weekend. Are people here going to rallies at all. Think our next one is the summer breezer near biggin hill in kent/london.
Was that F650s not v high? or are you tall?

It would be good for riding through those floods! You would have to tour the world if you got one, anyway, so shouldn't let the weather here put you off :-)
They are too big to appeal to me but I sat on one of the F650s a few years ago at the NEC, not expecting to like it, and it was probably the most comfortable bike I've ever sat on. It was the model where you can store your helmet where the tank "should" be, very quirky. Would have been my next choice if I hadn't got the W650, I think.

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
In Florida, you could get a learner's permit/restricted license actually, when you were 14 years old (I turned 14 in 1964)..this would allow you to drive a car with an adult in the car with you, or to ride a motorcycle alone (there was a restriction on HP for that motorcycle until you were 16 yrs old though..>5 HP, and you could get a regular license to drive a car when you were 16 yrs old.) My brother had had motorcycles for years, but he was 8 years older than me and had bought his bikes, 750cc Harley Davidson KD models (the side valve predescessor to the Sportster) while he was stationed in Washington State..over 3000 miles from my Mother, who was not a motorcycle fan. I really wanted to have a motorcycle, now my brother had returned from service and he bought a Jawa 50 to ride back and forth to work. That made me want a bike even more. Problem was, my mother was afraid of them and it was going to be a hard sell. it took about a year of whinning to get permission, but in 1965 I bought my brother's Jawa, he had moved up to a Honda 305 Dream. The key factor in convincing my Mom that it was OK to have a motorcycle, was that my Dad had owned a Whizzer motorbike..Dad had a motorcycle, Georgie had a motorcycle...why can't I have a motorcycle..waa, waa, waa. The earliest indication that I might be prone to MBS was, in 1968, I owned the Jawa 50 (trail bike only by then), a Honda 50 Supersport (CA110), a Honda S90 and a Suzuki Olympian 150. I also had a 1957 Plymouth Savoy..1968 was a very good year. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. I was very lucky, although I didn't realise it at the time. My Mum had saved up about 350 so I could buy a car when I was 18. When I announced I was going to buy a GP100 she didn't object at all. It wasn't until years later that my Dad told me she had never liked his bikes so I can't imagine she was pleased with my decision. Mind you, it's only in the last couple of months that my Dad has admitted that he had a Lambretta before he owned the AJS and Panther that I remember.......

Lots of questions, Laura!
Greenlaning/trail riding is not the same as trials & trials is not the same as motocross. Have a look for the TRF website for an idea of trails/greenlaning. Trials is more about getting around sections and you lose points for having to put your foot down. My Dad used to marshall at trials events and we used to get "dragged" around with him; although I enjoyed it I'm not so sure about my mum and brother. I want to try trials and trails - they both appeal. I told my Dad I wanted to try trials, thinking he'd be pleased but he was quite worried. He reckons its a family trait that Clarkes don't bounce when they fall off, they just go splat! I'll just have to try not to fall off much, then :-)
We're off to the BSA international rally in Belgium next Friday. Unfortunately, I haven't got my BSA sorted and Jon's developed an alarming rattle from the engine the other day so neither of us will be on BSAs - just have to hope we won't get kicked off the site!
I'm average height (5'5" ish) but shortish legs - just long enough to reach the ground though. The F650 isn't really low like a cruiser. I think I've seen a few favourable reviews of it by women riders.

input, mine doesn't, so I sold that and bought an Oregon Scientific Helmet
Camera..it is self contained, records to a 2 GB flash card, used that as my
"tail camera" this year at ECHR, but it comes with a handlebar mount and a
mounting system to attach to your helmet..haven't figuired out how to mount
to my modular though.

I've seen setups rigged up to the gas cap. Not sure if they're out there for the hawk though. Seems like a helmet cam would be too jittery...

Maybe not the highest quality but so cheap you could just buy it.
Anybody have any experience with it?

Why do so few politicians ride? Are motorcycles and BS mutually exclusive?

Re: Rear tire width question
?
I would hesitate to put a 120/80 on. These bikes
are prone to sitting down at the rear and a 120/80 will lower the back more than
the stock 130/80.
?
The tyre you want is a 120/90...slightly
taller.
?
Either tyre will improve low speed handling because
the rolling radius is closer to the front tyre's.
?
Putting a fat rear tyre on will simply bugger up
the handling. It will feel wierd tipping into bends because the rear radius is
so much bigger than the front's, it'll have significantly LESS
grip, especially in the wet, because the LARGER contact patch will have less
pressure ( weight) per square inch...And it'll look stupid, like someone fitted
a big rear tyre to pretend they have a really powerful engine and never go round
corners. ...:-)

The TT is always on a Saturday Laura. I was
watching it but as it is obviously goping to be yet another Rossi benefit (Yawn)
I've left it to come and type this. I enjoyed the 125s The 250s were a bit
boring but as usual the Moto GP is a forgone conclusion.

Subject: [W650riders] Dutch TT -
NWC
As it's the Dutch TT this weekend (on now
on Eurosport - yes on the sat not the sunday) here's a classic dutch bikesong
for you all. I sang along to it as a teenager while reading the lyrics (do
teenagers still do that?) anyway did hear of BSA and Norton and it wasn't
until 26 years later that these names began to mean anything! It's been chosen
as the best bikesong at the TT last year apparently.
