Anyone else notice....

that their W ages like a fine wine? Maybe I'm losing my mind but it
seems as if my W sounds way better now that it's 7000 miles old than
when I bought it at 1600 miles.

Popping on shut throttles is caused by the pilot circuit en-richening screws
being set too lean. which they HAVE to be for emissions.
The carbs are otherwise jetted OK up to 6000 rpm when they go rich. If that
sounds confusing remember that Constant Vacuum carbs ( CV) are opened or
closed by the suction effect of the engine...open the butterfly throttles
and the engine sucks in air and that suction lifts the carb slide. Your
throttle cables are not directly connected to the slide, unlike on
conventional slide carbs. Ergo, engine revs determine how much slide lift
you get and thus which jets are working. The pilot fuel/air circuit works
exclusively up to 1000 rpm at which revs the slide starts to lift, adding
the needles controlling influence which increases as revs rise until by 3000
rpm, the needle is the predominant metering system. At 6000rpm the needles
come right out and the bike is on pure main jets. These are intentionally
too big to cut down noise...correct jetting produces a snarl so the
over-rich engine note is somewhat muffled. This muffled high revs note
stays under the noise regs and allows the mid-range exhaust note to be more
robust.

You need to adjust your pilot screws out ...there's notes on this in the
files section. That stops the popping.

The pinging is probably mechanical...many have commented but in an
air-cooled engine where you sit on top of the heads, pinking is actually
MUCH louder and nothing like the distant tinkling one hears in a car. A bike
has a distinct and loud CRACK when it detonates.

Pop quiz ('cause I don't know the answer):

Engine pinging on acceleration or uphill, and exhaust popping (like a
baby backfire) on downshift are symptoms of what, specifically?
Mixture? Carb asynch? Something else?

You won't get one. The Police one's weave for the same reason the W does...Big coppers punch a big hole in the air and create a BIG low pressure zone. The cops are scratching their heads because their Pans are fitted with up-rated load adjusting shocks but they'll still sometimes but not always weaving at high speed. They've cottoned on to the extra weight thing, but not the torso size of the rider. They haven't yet spotted that its the big chested burly officers that are getting the problems.....
?
Think I should tell 'em?

?

I took it up to speeds in excess of the normal motorway speeds and no weave at all. however mine will have the top box fitted so I will find out if that has an adverse effect

Now you can get embroiled in the famous copper killing weave debates??that?are consuming all the Pan riders at the moment.

I spoke to a Pan riding copper last month and I'm pretty sure its the same as the W weave!

As some of you will know recently I have been considering a more touring style of appliance. Today I rode tested a ST1300?Pan European. I was offered a really good trade in for my CB1300S against a brand new Pan complete with a package off accessories worth ?850 for less than the list price of a standard bike.
Hopefully I will be concluding the deal next week

The pinkering I don't think is anything as most of the Ws seem to have that..but the exhaust popping is symptomatic of your carbs needing properly jetted as they are not jetted so well from the factory. Have your factory airbox removed thats located behind the side panels that the carbs breath into and put them on some K&N single filters for each of your carbs and have the carbs rejetted to suit the new air setup and you will have a roaring machine without any popping.
