Re: Henderson

From what?I understand, the weakness of the Henderson was cooling of the middle two cylinders. Didn't spot a radiator on the Indian. Does it have the some problem??

Carb Problem

My 2000 W650 was running poorly for several months. Engine would
break up on light acceleration or when engine/weather was cold.
Engine started & idled fine and was good on heavy throttle. The
Kawasaki dealer overhauled the carbs. The problem was the diaphram on
the vacuum valves. A very expensive repair as the vacuum valves are
$105 each. The repair was a success. Don't know what caused
deterioration of the diaphrams.

Re: Henderson

Floyd Clymer, former Indian Dealership owner, former editor of CYCLE magazine, and owner to the rights to Indian motorcycle name in the 70s did put his name plates on some Enfields and some some Italian made motorcycles.

The bike pictured though, had a modern disk brake.

That is a Brittish "Indian", I think, because of copy rights, it can be
called an Indian in England, but if it were sold in the USA, it would be
sold as a Dakota.

Anyway, it is a much better "Indian" than those S&S V-Twin powered
California Motorcycle Company cookie cutter chopper things that won the
rights in court, to use the Indian trademark in the USA.

The hand operated advance/retard lever was common on Brit bikes before
the
development of the spring loaded auto-advance mechanism. You set it
retarded
for starting, minimising kick-backs and ensuring a slow, lazy tick-over
from
cold, and advanced it for fast running. You could also retard the
ignition
to slog up hills, which was ideal if you were pulling a chair with the
family on board!

A 110/90/18 is basically the same as a 4.00/90. The TT100/K81 is still
available in the UK in 4.00/18 but I'd definately put a BT45 110/90/18 on

air-cooled RD racers recommend...paired with the Avon Venom front

Can't view your attachment. If you post it in the temp photos section
maybe I can shed some light on the bike .

I owned two 125 Hercules in the early to mid 70's. Both were
competition enduro bikes. The first had a Sachs engine with the
sunburst head. The next one was a seven speed with I think an updated
Sachs engine. A little heavy for a 125 but very competitive and reliable.

Keith Williams

My first single "real" motorcycle? that started my love for singles was a 1948 AJS (48/18-5809-B ) It should have had an advance lever but it had a Matchless magneto that origionally had acentrifugal advance on the sprocket.? There was no bulge for an advance sprocket on an AJS so it was timed at 5/8" BTDC.? this worked out OK as long as I eased it through compression with the release lever, and I could then start it by HAND thanks to the millstones in the crankcase.? It was a constant source of amusement to see someone else try to start it.? I had an ancient oyal Enfield Bullet that was even more unforgiving.? The previou owner wanted to buy it back after I went through it and had put a heavy chunk of stainless on it for a kick peddle.? He was careless and it kicked back snapping said peddle off and chipping his two front teeth.? He bought it anyway,? Keith Williams

R,
On my second bike, a '69 XLCH Sportster, which I bought new in the
summer of '68, the left hand grip was used to retard or advance the
ignition. If one forgot and tried to start it on full advance it
would "ever-so-gently" remind you of your trangression by trying to
launch the operator a** over tea-kettle into outer space
somewhere...

Usually I could start it up with just two or three kicks though
(unless it was real cold out) which was considered pretty good for
that model. I think that '69 was the last year of that magneto
ignition on the Sportsters, too.
