I have found that my bike's acceleration at full throttle at,say, 3,500-
4,000 rpm, is underwhelming in terms of an increase over 3/4 throttle.
I'm beginning to suspect that the throttle position sensor, which does
not provide full advance of 35 degrees until 5,000,is too conservative.
Happily, the throttle sensor is adjustable. Naturally, one does not
want to go to far with this as it may provoke "knock." Does any have
any experience adjusting this thing for a better advance curve?

It looks like a Henderson..as Indian bought Henderson, it could well be an
Indian logo on the tank..

Well, gang, it was at least 36C today in old Victoria, our neighbours got
back from California and it was hotter here. Hellish hot tonight. Kids
can't sleep. The dog, our Bull Terrier Flashman, isn't even farting, it's
so hot. I'm not into "Iron Chef," so have taken refuge in the eBay
Motorcycles, 1898-1960 section, with a cold Belgian beer. So I took off my
new $7 T-shirt (did I mention it's hot?) but couldn't resist scanning its
logo to see if you can identify the bike, if it exists at all, at all.
Excuse any sweat marks. Is it possibly an Indian? I don't know. Copy in
Temp Photos, (page 2) News from BC if you can't get this one.

I've had 5 XS 650s..first, a 1978 Special in 1982, then a 1980 and a 1983
Specials in 1993..a 1976 Standard and a 1978 Standard in 1998 (I bought all
of these while living in Hawaii). My favorite model is the 1975 Standard,
which I have never owned..it had the "new" frame and was, I think, the best
looking of them all.

When my XS wife left me, I told her to take whatever she wanted, two of the
things she took were the 1980 and 1983 XSs. Years later, she wanted some
money, which I gave her to get some of my personal stuff back...and I got
the two XS' back. I sold the 1983, never liked their tail end anyway,
decided to keep the 1980..problem was, I lived in Hawaii and the bike was in
Florida, and no one here was riding it. A former student of mine, Mariana,
said that if I gave it to her, she would ride it, and when I came to GA on
vacation, she would let me ride it in the mountains. Mariana has had it
ever since...she rode it to my yearly TWO vacation last year and rode it to
Natural Bridge this year.

The 1980 has progressive suspension, one over piston and rings, (I should
have bought the 700 kit) a four gallon tank, an H-4 head lamp from an XJ
550, Travelcade seat..not the stepped thing..just a flat seat, and Super
Bike bars and grips from BikeMaster.

I am a member of the Yamaha 650 Society, and you should check with MikesXS
for parts and accessories..he has some pretty neat stuff. There is a really
nice, and inexpensive speedometer/tachometer instrument cluster available
through Mike's.

James, love the stories and all those bikes . Have you had an early XS 650.
I have 3 that I'm planning to built into a street tracker or two. I went off
to the Robinson Bros. bike-a -bike course in upper NY state a couple of
summers ago to learn from the guys who started the street tracker thing.
I've got a wack of parts including a 750 kit for one. Robinson has had
better luck with 700 cc they claim. I've talked a bit with Omar and he seems
to have some neat items for trackers too. Thanks for the reply much

ride, and as a confidence builder for people who have been away from

A) the MB5 was the first stock 50cc motorcycle I ever remember being
tested
at up to 60 MPH

and TLR200 Reflex,
A) I felt the Reflex was a little under powered..had one as a trainer at
LAAFB, we had NX 125s at Ceritos, Hollywood and other places I taught,
and
the 125s felt stronger..never had them side by side, but seat of the
pants
impression was, the NX 125 had a stronger motor and better brakes.

NX 650,
A) A student had one in an ERC that I taught, I was very impressed by how
well it worked, I looked for one to purchase for years after that, but
never
came accross one.

EZ90 Cub,
I had a Honda 50 Cub, and two Honda 50 Super Sports. I also had the Honda
S90, Honda's biggest seller in the USA acording to David Edwards of Cycle
World magazine...always amazed at how many people I bump into that owned
a
Honda S90.

and all 3 years '84,'85,'86 of the Honda Gyro's, '74 ST90, '73 CR250M
Elsinore.These are some of Honda fun models. Daniel
A) never had or rode any of those, but I did have some Hondas that I
would
really like to own again..

My 1975 Honda CB 400F was an abosolute blast to ride, few motorcycles
have
been so inspiring for me. When I moved from Ft Walton Beach/Eglin AFB FL
to
Hampton/Langley AFB VA, my wife and kids stayed in FL for a while. I
packed
my uniforms and clothes/necessities on that little Honda..it took 18
hours
to get to New Port News..I really didn't know how much farther
Hampton/Langley AFB was (just a few more miles), but I was too tired and
too
cold to go on...the CB, however, never missed a beat..just hummed right
along through the whole day.

My 1978 CX 500 got me from Hampton VA to Jacksonville Florida in less
time
than I would have spent at a day's work, effortlessly and without
complaint..yeah, it was big for a 500, and ugly for a motorcycle, but it
worked, and it worked well. I would buy the GL Silver Wing if I ran
accross
one, the GL is more attractive, came with better brakes and luggage, the
lower seat height would make it more attractive to some of my less tall
friends who visit me..or used to when I was in Hawaii.

My 1981 Honda CB 650 Custom (SOHC) was like the CB 400 F on steroids,
handled well..especially after I replaced its huge bars with SUPER BIKE
bars. If I had the chance to get another CB 650 though, I would rather
have
the standard with 4 into two pipes and an 18 inch rear wheel.

I have had 2 CB 650 SC and one CB 700 S (DOHC, hydraulic valves and cam
chain tensioner, shaft drive) A great commuter, amazingly good handling
bike, the small tank and iron seat on the 650s wouldn't make a good bike
for
trips though...yes Itried that..LA to Riverside and back was about my
tolerence capacity. I rode one to Oxnard and back from LA, and down to
San
Diego...the bike did great, my bottom wasn't happy though. I did have a
CB
700 S (the rest of the World got this as a 750), I assume from riding
around
the island of Oahu, that it would have been a better distance bike than
the
CB 650 SC..and if I was going to get a bike between these two, the 700 S
would easily be my choice, the 650 made about 80 HP, easily enough..the
700
made more though, the 650 was hampered by cartoonish styling..the 700 S
looked like a motorcycle.

I still have a 1981 CB 900 Custom, it goes faster through the mountains
than
it should, will do all day, two up touring as good as anything I have
owned...probably one of the best motorcycles I have owned, not the
fastest,
or most exciting...but just a damned good motorcycle.

The typical Hondas are more what I had in mind, VFRs, Gold Wings, ST
1300s..
all work very well, will probably last forever, just aren't individuals.

I have a Honda NS 50, so if you think your GB 500 has character (and it
does), ride an NS 50.

I also have two NT 650 Hawks, a CB1, and a 1981 CB 900 Custom..all of
which
are characters.

My Honda CBR 600 F3 though, just does its job...it has some character
because I have removed most of the plastic.

Have you been on Stunt Road, near Topanga Canyon Road..

What about Pacific Crest Road..runs right along a peak of mountains..you can
look down on one side and see the coast line, look out the other and see the
larger mountains to the East..cool, plus in one area..you look down on the
turn you will be taking in the next few minutes..it is off Topanga as well,
just after a little gas station before you peak on Topanga and start down
towards the ocean.

I learned about Latigo Canyon road because of the first Yamaha Venture ad,
1983..an ariel view of the convoluted road with the caption "Will your
touring bike do this?". I don't remember which road I took to get there, I
do remember that it does let out onto the PCH.

I lived in CA over 16 years ago..it is amazing how much I can recall about
these roads after so much time...I am so looking forward to spending some
time on those roads, and doing that with some of my old friends (OK, Nance
and Mariana are both more than 10 years younger than me, but I have known
them for a long time) and it would be nice to share some riding time with
someone else from this group...I have actually ridden with Pete C. and sent
videos of my rides to Rose...but more sharing should equal more fun.

My son Mike, by the way, wants me to get a sport bike to keep at his
house..he is not so impressed by the nostalgic motorcycle look that pleases
me.

I went to the Alpine Village once, it was October Fest, and they were having
a pretty good time, I was there with some of my favorite people.

The road that runs along the coast and into San Pedro is pretty fun, and
just off that road is Palos Verdes Road..very fun as well...so many roads,
so little time....

The thing I would suggest you remember is, riding is supposed to be
fun..ride at a pace that is fun for you.

When you ride through the canyons to the PCH 1, you have to make a stop at
"Neptune's Net" another Motorcycle hangout and they have the freshest and
best seafood in the area, it's right before the Ventura County line. You
probably know that already. Sure sounds like you are having a lot of fun
riding planned. :) We live in Simi Valley and are pretty much surrounded by
canyons, however since I'm still a fairly new rider I have to take some of
them slow.

I usually drive to Torrance (Alpine Village) by San Pedro to buy my german
goodies.

to meet up with you. We do have great roads here, although I hate riding

the freeways here. Aside from the horrid rain grooves, we have potholes

cracks from previous earthquakes. I miss my Autobahn :) We are riding on
the 20th to Monterey along the coast for the Laguna Seca Moto GP, it
should
be a nice ride. Yeah, Dave had to store his Thruxton for a 1 1/2 years
while
he was in Afghanistan and he was worried about the condition it would be
in.
He put it on a Motorcycle lift, drained the carburator, took out the
battery
and added stey-bil in the tank. When he returned this May his beloved
Thruxton was just as he left it.

Haven't seen another W here in the Los Angeles area either. We ride almost
every Sunday to the Rockstore in Malibu, Cali, where you see pretty

every kind of motorcycle. Jay Leno always rides up with bizarre

bikes or cars. Every time I ride up on the W, people just gather

because they never seen one and most have no idea what it is. Matter
