Re: Thinking about getting rid of my w650
Terry,
Look at where the riders knees are, if your knees are higher than your hips, you place stress on the nerves that go to your legs..which could easily cause numbing and pain, and if your legs "go to sleep", how are you going to hold that bike up when you stop? Not that it really matters, but I think it is funny looking too, like when you see adults riding 20" BMX bikes. I liked the Sportster Sport, a little taller in the saddle, bigger tank, cast wheels (which means it could run tubeless tires), tachometer, dual disk brakes (I know that the extra disk adds more weight, and in most cases, is just over kill for street riding, but I want dual disks if they are available). They don't make that model anymore..it must have worked too well. What I would really like to see, is a Sportster that looked more like the 1957 original..real seat, 4.5 gallon gas tank, and a head lamp that looked like a motorcycle light, and not something you took from your son's (or daughter's) schwinn. Yeah, I want the new tech stuff, disk brakes, CDI, FFI, electric start, H4 lamp, rubber mounted engine...I just want the bike to look like a Sportster. And I want a tach, you pay enough for a Sportster, that you should get a tach standard. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. Solar, wind, or nuclear, groovy, I think there's enough of a savings there, though I'm not sure the price of solar components is down low enough to compete economically with fossil. Cool bike, though. Wish it had a top speed and range that waspractical for me.

NWC, mostly Honda stuff now..
From Daniel : Love all those Hondas, you've got great taste. I to have had CB1's (5)

A) I have only had one, my son's really, I just bought it after it had sat for 5 -6 years, made it run and then it moved to his house..it was always a hard starter, and ran hot..pilot jets from my CBR 600's carbs which were replaced, made the bike a ready starter and it ran cooler (I think they were "42"s) 650 Hawks (6) A) I have two of those, 'one with a TWO BROTHERS RACING exhaust..excellent bike for visitors, easy to ride, low seat height..light/flickable/fun 85 VF1000R, A) I have had 3 VFR 750s and one VFR 1000 (two of the 750s were given to me, and they didn't run, the 1000, also a gift, didn't run either) the 750 that did run was a very good motorcycle, can't think of anything it did poorly, but it never felt like a keeper to me. My younger brother, John, has a 95 VFR 750, thinks it is the best motorcycle in the world. CH250 Elite's (2) A) I have ridden one of those, two CH 150s, a CH80 and a CH 50. Still have a F3 Smokin Joe and still in the crate A) I have one CBR 600 F3, it doesn't have a fairing anymore, and has clip-ons..and a 10" chrome headlamp, engine is blacked out, frame is polished...my son has it as well as the CB1 a new NSR50R from Honda Racing Corp. A) I have a streetable NSR 50, I have been using it to teach people how to ride, and as a confidence builder for people who have been away from riding as well..neat little commuter, and it always generates smiles. I've had a ZB50, still have a MB50 A) the MB5 was the first stock 50cc motorcycle I ever remember being tested at up to 60 MPH and TLR200 Reflex, A) I felt the Reflex was a little under powered..had one as a trainer at LAAFB, we had NX 125s at Ceritos, Hollywood and other places I taught, and the 125s felt stronger..never had them side by side, but seat of the pants impression was, the NX 125 had a stronger motor and better brakes. NX 650, A) A student had one in an ERC that I taught, I was very impressed by how well it worked, I looked for one to purchase for years after that, but never came accross one. EZ90 Cub, I had a Honda 50 Cub, and two Honda 50 Super Sports. I also had the Honda S90, Honda's biggest seller in the USA acording to David Edwards of Cycle World magazine...always amazed at how many people I bump into that owned a Honda S90. and all 3 years '84,'85,'86 of the Honda Gyro's, '74 ST90, '73 CR250M Elsinore. These are some of Honda fun models. Daniel A) never had or rode any of those, but I did have some Hondas that I would really like to own again.. My 1975 Honda CB 400F was an abosolute blast to ride, few motorcycles have been so inspiring for me. When I moved from Ft Walton Beach/Eglin AFB FL to Hampton/Langley AFB VA, my wife and kids stayed in FL for a while. I packed my uniforms and clothes/necessities on that little Honda..it took 18 hours to get to New Port News..I really didn't know how much farther Hampton/Langley AFB was (just a few more miles), but I was too tired and too cold to go on...the CB, however, never missed a beat..just hummed right along through the whole day. My 1978 CX 500 got me from Hampton VA to Jacksonville Florida in less time than I would have spent at a day's work, effortlessly and without complaint..yeah, it was big for a 500, and ugly for a motorcycle, but it worked, and it worked well. I would buy the GL Silver Wing if I ran accross one, the GL is more attractive, came with better brakes and luggage, the lower seat height would make it more attractive to some of my less tall friends who visit me..or used to when I was in Hawaii. My 1981 Honda CB 650 Custom (SOHC) was like the CB 400 F on steroids, handled well..especially after I replaced its huge bars with SUPER BIKE bars. If I had the chance to get another CB 650 though, I would rather have the standard with 4 into two pipes and an 18 inch rear wheel. I have had 2 CB 650 SC and one CB 700 S (DOHC, hydraulic valves and cam chain tensioner, shaft drive) A great commuter, amazingly good handling bike, the small tank and iron seat on the 650s wouldn't make a good bike for trips though...yes Itried that..LA to Riverside and back was about my tolerence capacity. I rode one to Oxnard and back from LA, and down to San Diego...the bike did great, my bottom wasn't happy though. I did have a CB 700 S (the rest of the World got this as a 750), I assume from riding around the island of Oahu, that it would have been a better distance bike than the CB 650 SC..and if I was going to get a bike between these two, the 700 S would easily be my choice, the 650 made about 80 HP, easily enough..the 700 made more though, the 650 was hampered by cartoonish styling..the 700 S looked like a motorcycle. I still have a 1981 CB 900 Custom, it goes faster through the mountains than it should, will do all day, two up touring as good as anything I have owned...probably one of the best motorcycles I have owned, not the fastest, or most exciting...but just a damned good motorcycle. The typical Hondas are more what I had in mind, VFRs, Gold Wings, ST 1300s.. all work very well, will probably last forever, just aren't individuals. I have a Honda NS 50, so if you think your GB 500 has character (and it does), ride an NS 50. I also have two NT 650 Hawks, a CB1, and a 1981 CB 900 Custom..all of which are characters. My Honda CBR 600 F3 though, just does its job...it has some character because I have removed most of the plastic. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHmm. Interesting. But if they're going to flog it
as a 'green' vehicle, they need to address where the electricity is coming from.
If it's coming from a coal-fired electricity plant that doesn't have to make its

I wouldn't think of doing it now (older and wiser?) but I used to ride with a few Hooligans.? You could be cruising along next thing you know someone has passed you and hit the kill switch, if you just flipped the switch back on you would get a nice backfire and flame out of the pipe (espcially?a Vance & Hines).? A Vulcan 1500 had the best backfire.? Like they say what goes around comes around, I've caught?my boys doing burnouts and donuts with their dirt bikes and wasn't to happy. ? I had to work this past Saturday and brought the boys and their XR100's (with street tires) so they could ride in the parking lot while I was working.? It was raining when they started riding and they took it easy for a while, then it quit raining and as the pavement started to dry the speeds increased.? The corners were the last to dry and they had some good slides about the time mom showed up to check on them.? We
have a flat track in the back yard and they're getting pretty good at sliding through the corners but mom won't watch.? We're going on vacation next week and will see some of my old buddies and they will likely talk about the old days (70mph wheelies and such), just hope the boys don't hear.? James Franklin wrote:

Back firing can be cool, some people have made it into an art..engine cut-off switch off, rev throttle, turn cut-off back on release clutch with bike now rolling in gear..KA-BLAM!!! Not that I have ever done that though.

2 wheels per vehicle is better than "2 wheels good, four wheels bad", as there are many on this list that have MBS. I have NO four wheeled vehicles at all, by the way..my truck has six wheels.

Ruari McLennan
Hello All, I have posted a File under the existing "Air Injection Removal" File at the W650Riders site providing comprehensive, but perhaps incomprehensible, updated instructions for removing this stuff and ordering factory replacement parts, plus a picture of the relevant service manual diagram. If anyboody does it could you please consider posting some before/after pictures, to explain the removal process better?
