Re: Arrgghhh...I can't make up my mind whether I hate my...

The typical Hondas are more what I had in mind, VFRs, Gold Wings, ST 1300s.. all work very well, will probably last forever, just aren't individuals.

I have a Honda NS 50, so if you think your GB 500 has character (and it does), ride an NS 50.

I also have two NT 650 Hawks, a CB1, and a 1981 CB 900 Custom..all of which are characters.

My Honda CBR 600 F3 though, just does its job...it has some character because I have removed most of the plastic.

W650 Riders,

I am switching over to a Gunfighter and Lady. I have a Gunfighter for
sale. It's in very good condition. I just bought the bike--but I
know that it was always stored covered...and in a garage. It's black
leather with an all black design.

It's yours for $100 plus shipping. They retail for $299.

Hi James Good to know that I am no longer a motorcyclist but have in fact just become an appliance operator.
Still I suppose it makes a change from HD bashing.
Maybe we should have a list of bikes that are NOT acceptable to members of this list. So far we have HDs Hondas Bonneville's sports bikes & cruisers.
Those that have been accept are Kawasakis (of course) Laverdas Moto Guzzis BMW air heads and any type of off road bike.

Remember that the W is a machine, it is not a Honda appliance..there will be
whirls and whistles, and a clunk every now and then..this bike has
character, and it just may take a character to own one.

Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously
been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a
***problem*** bike. I have decided that if I can't get it sorted by
the end of the summer then I am going to get rid of it and look for
something else....I am so p*ssed of right now. The bikes are not going
well, we have just got some work, which means my dream of going to Uni

James,

Let me know when you are in the area. Dave (my worst half) and I would love to meet up with you. We do have great roads here, although I hate riding on the freeways here. Aside from the horrid rain grooves, we have potholes and cracks from previous earthquakes. I miss my Autobahn :)? We are riding on the 20th to Monterey along the coast for the Laguna Seca Moto GP, it should be a nice ride. Yeah, Dave had to store his Thruxton for a 1 1/2 years while he was in Afghanistan and he was worried about the condition it would be in. He put it on a Motorcycle lift, drained the carburator, took out the battery and added stey-bil in the tank. When he returned this May his beloved Thruxton was just as he left it.

All the Ws were left hand shift, as most Japanese bikes have been.

Some, like the Bridgestone GTX 350, or the Yamaha XS 750 had the gear shift
shaft go out on both sides though, so they could go either way.

Weird, all right.? I will confess a really embarassing thing... Last winter I had a chest cough for a while, which seemed to clear up, but later?whenever I was in the relative quiet of the garage, this clear whistling wheeze would start, often, but not always, as I took a deep breath.

You guessed it...? 2 X-rays later, I figured out it was my W650.

Weird, isn't it? It's like there's some strange creature breathing in the garage.

frequently vents something from the gas cap area; every time I'm in the
garage alone when it's quiet, I can hear it go off every few seconds.

I guess you could try kicking it over without the ignition if you had it on the centrestand. But perhaps that would only turn the wheel and not free the clutch?

Anyway, for some reason I can't articulate, I don't start it usually on the centrestand.

I always snick it into first as the motor runs down off a throttle
blip...and I have the front brake on as I do. It still graunches a bit, but
it doesn't leap forward! Trouble is, you can't 'free the clutch' like on the
old Triumphs because the kickstart is through the gearbox and propels the
bike forward w3hen the bike's in gear.

Jon

I don't know why, but perhaps it goes in

That's incredible mileage. I'm surprised he ever went over 30 mph!

A mystery. Here's my start-off procedure if you think it'll help. Got it
by
amalgamating others' on this group. Sorry to teach granny to suck eggs,
but
I wondered if it's something to do with going into gear at the higher revs
you keep mentioning.

I always warm her a bit up to 2000-2250 with the choke on, and shove in
the
choke completely before heading off. This prevents me forgetting to put
it
in later and fouling the plugs, which doesn't take long if you ride with
the
choke out. . This procedure takes a few minutes in winter and right now,
in
the good weather with my richer #38 pilot jet in, only 20-30 seconds. So
when I put her into first with the clutch disengaged, while idling at
maybe
200-500, I have no revs going at all hardly. So little scrunching going
on. Then I rev up to 2000-2500 at least and let in the clutch and chug up
my steep driveway.

About 50% of the time mine goes into 1st fine but gives a big jump and
graunch of protest, esp. if cold. I think it's the clutch sticking. If I
don't pull firmly & fast from first into second it'll graunch there too.
Going down I have to be firm and fast on the tap or it might do the same
from second-first.

I've forgotten how many miles are on it, have the valves been adjusted?
(thinking bags of nails sounds). Never had electrical whines or bevel
whines (touch wood).

Remember, many say this bike loves a good "thrashing, "caning" etc. I
have
resolved never to baby mine, I twist that throttle whenever I can even if
just to get up to revs in town. More fun.

Go compare with another W, ride it hard for a while, and see.
R.

This would be cool. It really is a treat, some even congratulate me on the great restoration job (haha). What area in LA does he live? My husband had mentioned he has seen one some years ago at the Hansen Dam Ride (Pasadena, CA).

Muholland HWY was the first place I ever went 150 MPH (that was on a friends
FZR 1000).

Haven't seen another W here in the Los Angeles area either. We ride almost
every Sunday to the Rockstore in Malibu, Cali, where you see pretty much
every kind of motorcycle. Jay Leno always rides up with bizarre looking
bikes or cars. Every time I ride up on the W, people just gather around it
because they never seen one and most have no idea what it is. Matter of fact
my husband was a little upset (haha) everyone is checking out my bike and
not his pristine cafe racer 04 Triumph Thruxton.

making them again!

That's a good one, James.

Jon

My Ninja 600 was pretty bad about the clutch sticking on first start of the
day, my cure was, put the bike in first gear, then start it, with the clutch
in of course..it might be just a little more work for the starter, but it
makes for less gear shavings in the tranny...

I don't know why, but perhaps it goes in

That's incredible mileage. I'm surprised he ever went over 30 mph!

A mystery. Here's my start-off procedure if you think it'll help. Got it
by
amalgamating others' on this group. Sorry to teach granny to suck eggs,
but
I wondered if it's something to do with going into gear at the higher
revs
you keep mentioning.

So little scrunching going
on. Then I rev up to 2000-2500 at least and let in the clutch and chug
up
my steep driveway.

About 50% of the time mine goes into 1st fine but gives a big jump and
graunch of protest, esp. if cold. I think it's the clutch sticking. If
I
don't pull firmly & fast from first into second it'll graunch there too.

R.

Ooops, should have replied to all so TJ gets it too...

Sorry, will be in Tampa this weekend. The 21st looks okay, but I'm riding to
Harrisburg on the 28th. Sometime in August?
